Finn
| ||||||||||
|
Finn (Japanese: フィン Fin) is a Lance Knight from Leonster. He appears as a playable character in both generations of Genealogy of the Holy War as well as in Thracia 776.
Biography
Finn serves as a vassal to Prince Quan and Princess Ethlyn of Leonster. The three arrive during Sigurd's initial battle with Verdane to reinforce him and help rescue Edain. Finn continues to accompany Sigurd through his travels in Verdane and Agustria before parting ways with him in Silesse so that Quan can raise an army to aid him. Finn is left behind in Leonster with Quan and Ethlyn's infant son Leif, and is not present for the Aed Massacre; King Travant of Thracia murders Quan and Ethlyn, steals the Gáe Bolg, and abducts Princess Altena. After Arvis conquers Jugdral, kills Sigurd, and restyles Grannvale into an empire, Finn flees into hiding in Thracia with Leif and Lachesis.
Finn continues to serve as Leif's vassal. He, Leif, and Nanna are cornered by Bloom's forces, forcing the three to hold out until reinforcements arrive led by Sigurd's son Seliph. Afterwards, he becomes the sole combatant member of Sigurd's former entourage to serve in Seliph's liberation army, accompanying him for the rest of the war with Grannvale and the Loptr Church.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
Finn is a playable character during both generations. In the Prologue, Finn, along with Quan and Ethlyn, appear as player units on turn 3 next to Chalphy. Finn will leave at the start of Chapter 4.
In Chapter 7, regardless of if he survived during the first generation, Finn—along with Leif and Nanna/Jeanne—will appear as player units next to Leonster. Finn retains his inventory if he is not married, but loses it to inheritance if he is; in either case, he also receives a new Iron Lance. In Chapter 8, Finn, Leif, and Nanna/Jeanne will start next to Leonster castle instead of in the home castle.

- In Chapter 8, Finn can initiate a conversation with Leif at any time, giving Leif +3 strength.
- In Chapter 9, Finn can talk to Altena, granting her +3 maximum HP.
Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Finn has decent base stats and growths, with particularly high luck and skill growths. Finn has Follow-Up, allowing him to attack enemies he is faster than twice; he can only use lances, which weigh him down considerably, but he can typically out-speed foes wielding axes or lances. Additionally, Finn can receive a Brave Lance from Quan in an event in Chapter 2, allowing him to attack enemies up to four times, though other units can also use the Brave Lance well, such as Erinys or Sigurd. Finn's other skill, Miracle, drastically raises his avoid when he is below 11 HP; while it can save Finn's life in desperate situations and allow him to clear the arena more reliably, it only lasts for one turn and requires that he be at risk of death.
Enemies in the first two chapters almost exclusively use axes; while Finn faces weapon triangle disadvantage against these enemies, they tend to have low avoid, and Finn can reliably double them due to the high weight of axes—at base with an Iron Lance, Finn can double every axe-wielding enemy in the first two chapters except Gerrard (for whom he needs one point of speed to double) and Munnir (for whom he needs two). Finn struggles to double enemies wielding lighter weapons such as bows or swords, but can more reliably do so with the Speed Ring that can be obtained in the Prologue.
Finn leaves Sigurd's army after Chapter 3 along with Quan and Ethlyn; however, Finn is also playable in the second generation—even if he was defeated in the first—and is only unit to be playable in both generations. In the second generation, Finn retains the stats and experience he had when he left the first. Finn gains an Iron Lance in his inventory, and will retain the rest of his items unless he was married, in which case he loses them (even if they are not inherited). Finn provides a means of transferring items from the first generation to the second, similar to inheritance, but doing so requires the items be unavailable for Chapters 4, 5, and 6.
As a father, Finn's primary contributions are Follow-Up, and Miracle. Miracle can be useful on units who otherwise would have a hard time surviving in combat, such as Lene or Patty. If he is their father, Finn can talk with Larcei, Lana, or Nanna in Chapter 7, granting them stat boosts; however, each child has other potential fathers that provide greater advantages to them or to their brothers. Additionally, none of the second generation sons are capable of inheriting lances from Finn. Furthermore, Finn will lose his entire inventory if he is married, removing his ability to transfer items from the first generation to the second and greatly reducing his ability to defend Leif and Nanna. Finally, as Finn leaves after Chapter 3, his ability to fall in love is restricted compared to other units'.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Finn is a Lance Knight who joins the player army at chapter 1, though he will not be available during the Munster chapters. Because he is higher leveled than most of the players army by that point in combination with his somewhat low growths (though not very low by Thracia standards) many people consider Finn a Jagen-type unit along with Dagdar and Eyvel. This is supported by the fact that Finn gets less EXP from killing earlygame enemies so he's usually used to capture enemy units in the earlygame instead.
He comes with the Brave Lance, a powerful lance that's exclusive to Finn, which allows him to always attack twice and gives him +10 luck when equipped. While the Brave lance makes Finn into an offensive powerhouse at the start of the game, it's recommended to trade him a weaker weapon as, despite having 60 uses, there are better uses for it later in the game and Finn can usually do just as well with a regular Iron Lance. Finn also comes with the skill Miracle, a skill that saves it's user from a lethal attack if it activates; however, Miracle activates based off of luck and as such is too unreliable to use consistently, despite Finn's high luck and will only be useful in rare occasions.
Finn is also one of the few character to posses an authority star, which improves the hit rate and avoid of all units by 3%. As Finn is forced to dismount in indoor maps, as well as forced to only use a sword (which he has a significantly lower rank in compared to lances), his offenses will be vastly weaker compared to operating outdoors. As such Finn makes for a decent filler unit in indoor maps as leadership stars are quite rare in FE5 and Finn doesn't need to do anything for it's effects to work on his teammates, therefore he doesn't risk getting fatigued during those maps as long as he doesn't get frequently attacked.
Overall, Finn is an excellent unit that provides great combat, reliable capturing and utility with his Authority. Sadly he's not available during the Munster chapters, arguably the hardest chapters, but otherwise he's useful on every outdoor map and scrolls can be used to boost his somewhat mediocre growths ensuring that he'll never fall off.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Finn is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Thracia 776 character set. He is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Lost Bloodlines DLC series.
As with several other legacy characters in Awakening, there is a unique weapon named for Finn available through the Barracks or event tiles: Finn's Lance.

Personality
Finn is shown to be a loyal and dutiful knight, with incredible loyalty to both Quan and Leif. He's shown to be somewhat inexperienced in the first generation of Genealogy, but he still catches Quan's attention enough to receive the Brave Lance from him and then be given the duty of protecting Leif. In the second generation, Finn is shown to be far more experienced, but also shown to be rather unemotional, as Leif states that he has not cried or laughed in years due to the hardships he has faced. Though he still has some emotional moments, such as when he's shown crying after seeing Altena again. Because of the lack of resources in Thracia after escaping the empire with both Leif and Nanna, Finn had to starve himself for both to receive food daily and nearly died, but was helped by Eyvel.

Lance of Legend
After hearing word that Leif had safely taken the throne, Finn suddenly disappeared. It was three years before he was seen again, reappearing just as suddenly as he had first vanished. No historical records exist of where he had gone or what he had been doing during his long absence. The only evidence that remains are strange rumors that he had been seen in the Aed Desert.

Trivia
- Finn has the best availability of all characters in Genealogy of the Holy War, being available in a total of 9 chapters. This is due to him being the only character in the game to be playable in both Sigurd's and Seliph's tales.
- In Genealogy of the Holy War, due to having a high amount of love growth with Brigid and Tailtiu, Finn can have either of them as his lover just after several turns in Chapter 3, even if they do not come in close proximity with each other.
- This was done because Finn automatically leaves the player's control at the end of the chapter. If the player wishes to have Finn fall in love with one of these two characters, this is the only opportunity to do so.
- According to Thracia 776's website, Finn was designed to look 34 years old.[1]
