Edain
| ||||||||||||
|
“ | No, I'm staying. There's bound to be more injuries further along. I want to help others in the service of the Lord. | ” | — Edain, to Sigurd |
---|
Edain (Japanese: エーディン Adean) is a nun and noblewoman from Grannvale's Yngvi dukedom, a descendant of the Crusader Ullr, the daughter of Lord Ring and the sister of Brigid and Andrey. While the bulk of Grannvale's army was off to war in Isaach, Verdane launched a small-scale invasion, successfully seizing Castle Yngvi and kidnapping Edain, with the kingdom's Prince Munnir taking her back to Verdane. While her childhood friend Sigurd led his few remaining knights into Verdane to rescue her, she was released from their imprisonment by Prince Jamke to travel to meet up with Sigurd's forces, with which she remains throughout Sigurd's troubles with Grannvale until the Battle of Belhalla, which she survived.
Biography
Despite their determination to protect Edain when the forces of Verdane surrounded Castle Yngvi, Midir and the other Yngvi knights fell to Prince Munnir and his army. Munnir took Edain with him back to Yngvi, mentioning to his subordinate Gerrard that he intended to marry her. Edain was imprisoned in Castle Marpha, Munnir's castle, awaiting his attention following the suppression of the invading Chalphy forces; during her imprisonment, she met Deirdre and told her about Sigurd[1]. Prince Jamke came to Marpha to free her, along with the arrested thief Dew at her request; he instructed the two to flee while he returned to the capital to attempt to persuade his father, King Batu, to stop the conflict[2].
Upon reuniting with Sigurd, she refused his request to head back to Yngvi, determined to help others with her healing abilities. She mentioned that she was motivated to join the nunnery to help her find her lost twin sister Brigid and give her, the major-blooded descendant of Ullr, the Yewfelle to wield. The two did indeed eventually reunite during the fight with the pirates of Orgahil which Brigid had led until very recently; while Brigid initially disbelieved her, Edain confirmed her identity by giving her the Yewfelle and having her successfully attempt to use it[3].
Edain was one of the few known survivors of the Battle of Belhalla. At some point after the battle, she travelled to Tirnanog, a village in Isaach, and became an abbess at its convent[4]. There, she helped Oifey and Shannan raise Seliph, Larcei, Scáthach and Diarmuid, acting as a surrogate mother to the four; she also had her own children, Lana and Lester.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Edain joins the army in Chapter 1 of the first generation. Her only weapon rank is a B in staves, so while her base magic is high, she cannot fight until promotion. With a B rank in staves, she can use most staves in the game, such as Warp and Return. After promotion, Edain can use every staff except Valkyrie. Edain's primary issue is her very low movement; she can never keep up with the mounted units dominating Genealogy of the Holy War, which makes it difficult for her to contribute.
By repeatedly using Warp or Return to send a unit to the home castle while at the home castle, Edain can gain experience very quickly, and can reliably reach level 20 by the end of Chapter 2. Edain's promotion gives her a C rank in fire, thunder and wind magic, allowing her to fight; however, she has no skills and cannot use high-rank tomes, making her combat lackluster. Edain's promotion also increases her staff rank to A, but does not increase her movement, so she will continue to fall behind.
Given her low movement, Edain's most significant use is to move units around the map Warp. She will not be able to keep up with cavalry, so she cannot use Heal or Mend; she can use the Physic staff, but 10-range will likely not be enough later in a chapter, considering how low her movement is. If the player chooses to play slowly, Edain will be able to contribute much more, but in fast playthroughs, her usefulness is extremely limited. As such, it may be best to leave Edain inside the home castle so she can gain experience and have some use by Warping units who enter it.
As a mother
Edain's most notable pairing options are Midir, Jamke, Claud, and Azelle. Midir and Jamke will strengthen Lester at the cost of weakening Lana; this is a worthwhile trade-off as Lester is far more likely to see combat than Lana. Midir and Jamke can both pass down bows to Lester, but will pass down different skills: Lester will inherit Follow-Up and Accost from Midir, and Accost and Adept from Jamke; as Lester will not have Follow-Up without inheriting it, Midir will sire a stronger Lester, though Jamke will not create a weak one. The downside to Midir is that Edain's inferior movement means he will have to stay away from combat to build love points with her; Jamke does not have this problem, as he has much closer movement to Edain.
Claud and Azelle significantly limit Lester's combat potential, but in return provide much earlier access to Rescue, which is otherwise inaccessible until Chapter 10. Rescue can make traversing Genealogy's large maps much faster; additionally, there is a glitch involving Rescue that allows a unit to have infinite turns. Azelle provides the Rescue staff in Chapter 4, but it cannot be inherited; Claud provides Rescue in Chapter 5, but a Lana fathered by Claud will have a high enough staff rank to inherit the Rescue staff. Claud also gives Lana the ability to use Fortify.

Brigid: How come you know my name? ...Wow, you look just like me. ...Edain, you say? Actually does sound kinda familiar...
Edain: Yes! I'm your twin sister! You were taken by pirates when you were just 5 years old! I've been looking for you for such a long time.
Brigid: I don't know. You're going to have to prove this to me somehow.
Edain: Okay. Take this bow. Then draw.
Brigid: Hm? Wow! Now that's a nice bow! Just draw it, right? Whoa! W, what is going on! Some strange power is bubbling up inside me. I... I have some recollection... Ah... my heart is burning... Edain. You are my sister, Edain!
Edain: Wonderful! You remember! That bow is the holy Yewfelle... It's been handed down through our family for generations.
