Appearance(s)

Byleth Eisner[4] (pronounced /ˈbaɪlɛθ[5] 'aɪznɝ/[key]; Japanese: ベレト or ベレス Byleth) is the avatar unit and protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses. During the course of the game they become a teacher at the Officers Academy.

Biography

Byleth was born of Jeralt and Sitri, a nun of the Church of Seiros in Imperial Year 1159, in critical condition and not breathing. Rhea took the Crest Stone of Flames from Sitri (who failed to achieve the progenitor god's conscience, and was also in critical condition) and placed it within the infant Byleth's heart, both to save the infant Byleth as well as to try again to reawaken the goddess Sothis; this resulted in Sitri's death.[6] However, this had the consequence of Byleth having extremely little emotion until the goddess started to reawaken around the start of the game.[7] Jeralt, seeing the infant's oddities and fearing Rhea's plans for them, took advantage of a fire to fake both their deaths and fled the monastery. The two spent the next twenty years wandering Fódlan as part of a mercenary troop.

One day, Jeralt's aid is requisitioned by three young nobles under attack by bandits: Princess Edelgard von Hresvelg of the Adrestian Empire, Prince Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, and Lord Claude von Riegan of the Leicester Alliance. During the battle, Byleth sacrifices themselves to save Edelgard from an attack; this awakens Sothis' consciousness within them, and she grants them the power of Divine Pulse to rewind time. Afterwards, the Knights of Seiros reunite with Jeralt and convince him to return to the Church, where Rhea offers Byleth a teaching position at the Officer's Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery. Byleth chooses one of three academic houses to lead: Edelgard's Black Eagles, Dimitri's Blue Lions, or Claude's Golden Deer, and spends the next year teaching them and fighting alongside them. During this time, a masked individual calling themselves the Flame Emperor and a cult known only as "those who slither in the dark" launch attacks on the Church. During a raid on the Church's Holy Mausoleum, Byleth discovers the Sword of the Creator and learns they possess the Crest of Flames, the Crest borne by the King of Liberation Nemesis in ancient history. Rhea entrusts the sword to them. Eventually, the assassin Kronya murders Jeralt; Byleth pursues her into the Sealed Forest outside Garreg Mach, falls into a trap, and is banished into a realm of darkness. Sothis sacrifices her individuality to grant Byleth the full extent of her power, allowing them to escape. In the aftermath, Rhea takes them to the Holy Tomb far underneath Garreg Mach to receive a divine revelation. The Flame Emperor interrupts the ritual to raid the Tomb, and in the ensuing battle is revealed to be Edelgard. If Byleth is a Black Eagle and attended her coronation as emperor earlier that month, they can defect to the Empire; otherwise, they remain allied with the Church. Edelgard, who views the Church as corrupt due to propagating the worship of Crests which led to the deaths of her siblings, declares war on the Church and attacks Garreg Mach. The Empire wins the battle, and Byleth is severely injured and falls into a coma for the next five years.

If Byleth sides with the Church, they awaken to find that the Kingdom has been reduced to a puppet state, Dimitri is presumed dead, the Alliance has fractured into pro-Church and pro-Empire factions, Claude has been struggling to maintain a facade of neutrality, Rhea has been captured by the Empire, the Knights of Seiros have scattered to the four winds to find her and Byleth, and the Empire is on the verge of conquering Fódlan. Byleth rallies an army to combat the Empire, with the exact details varying depending on the route. After a massive three-way battle between the Empire, Kingdom, and Alliance known as the Battle at Gronder, Byleth directly invades Adrestia and conquers Fort Merceus, a critical stronghold on the path to the Imperial capital of Enbarr. They then launch a direct invasion of Enbarr itself, and kill Edelgard. On the Azure Moon route, the war ends here; Dimitri and the Kingdom unite Fódlan under the former's rule, and Byleth becomes archbishop of the Church after Rhea retires. On the Silver Snow and Verdant Wind routes, Hubert posthumously warns them about those who slither in the dark, and Byleth besieges their stronghold Shambhala and kills their leader Thales. After defeating either Rhea after she suffers a draconic degeneration-induced mental breakdown due to injuries sustained in Shambhala (Silver Snow) or Nemesis after he is resurrected by those who slither in the dark as a last act of spite against Fódlan (Verdant Wind), Byleth unites the continent as the first ruler of the United Kingdom of Fódlan.

If Byleth sides with the Empire, they awaken to find that Dimitri has granted Rhea asylum and sided with the Church, and the two of them have fought the Empire to a stalemate while Claude and the Alliance remain nominally neutral. Byleth and Edelgard launch a renewed offensive, conquer and annex the Alliance, and either kill or exile Claude. After beating back a counterattack by the Church and assassinating a high-ranking member of those who slither in the dark, Byleth launches a direct invasion of Faerghus. Dimitri and Rhea intercept them at the Tailtean Plains, but the Empire emerges victorious, Dimitri is slain, and Rhea is forced to retreat to the Kingdom capital of Fhirdiad. Rhea orders Fhirdiad to be burned to the ground to slow the Imperial advance, but Byleth nevertheless defeats her and brings an end to the war. In the aftermath, Rhea's death causes the Crest Stone implanted in Byleth's heart to disintegrate, allowing their heart to start beating normally for the first time. Edelgard and the Empire unite the continent under the former's rule, and Byleth takes up arms against those who slither in the dark as their shadow war begins.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Role

Byleth is the avatar unit of Three Houses. They also function as a lord character, and their death is grounds for an immediate game over at all times. While Byleth is the primary protagonist of the game, they are a silent protagonist, unlike Kris and Corrin before them; however, they share this distinction somewhat with Robin in the Japanese version of Awakening, as that game offered a “silent protagonist” voice option for its avatar which was removed from the localization. As Byleth interacts with characters, the player is given options on how Byleth will respond to dialogue, which may change the reactions of the character they are speaking to. Each response may increase support points for a correct response depending on the partner's interests, or even decrease the partner's support points if the wrong answer was given.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Byleth is the main character of the game, and is a rather interesting unit overall. They start with solid bases overall, in particular an excellent base 13 strength, tied for highest in the game with Edelgard, and generally above-average stats in most other areas. While their charm base isn't exactly stellar, the consistent boosts from Tea Time on birthdays will prove to be quite the boon. Byleth will likely maintain this stat lead, as they have fairly solid growth rates all around and receive extra experience thanks to their personal ability, Professor's Guidance. At the start of the game, Byleth will be one of the player's strongest units, having better survivability than most of the students thanks to solid HP, speed, and defenses, while also boasting decent attack speed as well as solid single-hit damage via Wrath Strike when used with the Steel Sword that is obtained fairly early on.

Byleth has no outstanding weaknesses in either stats or weapon proficiencies, allowing them to take on whatever role the player desires. In addition, they gain a personal weapon in chapter 4, the Sword of the Creator; this grants them a decent 1-2 range option, as well as a very powerful single-hit, anti-dragon attack, Ruptured Heaven. In addition to strong overall combat, the abilities and combat arts they gain from their skill proficiencies can also provide some interesting options. Battalion Vantage and Battalion Desperation can offer the effects of certain class mastery abilities without needing to spend time in those classes, while also having safer activation conditions than their regular counterparts. In addition, they can also learn the elusive Windsweep, which can allow them to safely damage some of the most offensively dangerous enemies without fear of retaliation.

Byleth possesses the Crest of Flames; this grants them a 20% chance of restoring HP equal to 30% of the damage they deal, improving their survivability on the front lines somewhat. If this effect activates, then there is a secondary 25% chance for their Crest to also allow them to deny enemy counterattacks and grant 5 extra might for the attack; since this is ultimately a 5% chance overall, however, it is not something that one can reliably form strategies around. In addition to these effects and the ability to wield the Sword of the Creator at full power, Byleth's Crest also ensures that they will not take recoil damage from any of the other Heroes' Relics, which can also be decently effective in their hands due to their aforementioned high natural strength.

Byleth's biggest weakness as a unit is how their unit growth interacts with the game's mechanics. Unlike their students, who can be tutored 4-5 times a weekend, stamina permitting, in any subject of the player's choice, Byleth starts off only able to be tutored 3 times a weekend, is limited to whatever faculty is available on hand, and also draws on the same pool of activity points to do other things such as cooking meals or participating in tournaments. The overall effect is that Byleth's growth is actually weaker than their students throughout Part I. Fortunately, they automatically receive the Enlightened One class at the end of Chapter 10. The Enlightened One serves as an excellent fall-back option for Byleth at the end of Part I and in general, as it possesses solid stats all around and the ability to use both brawling and magic, making Byleth a generalist who has an option for every situation. It can be particularly helpful for magic-oriented builds as, though it has lower raw magic and lacks the "faire" abilities of classes such as Warlock, it has a significant movement advantage over most other magic classes.

Recruiting other units in Three Houses is generally tied to Byleth's stats. If one intends to recruit all possible units, then at bare minimum, assuming they get B supports with everyone save Ferdinand and Caspar, they need D Lances, Bows, Reason, and Riding and D+ Faith and Authority on all routes, D Heavy Armor as a Black Eagle, D Axes as a Church-aligned Black Eagle or Blue Lion, D+ Swords and E+ Flying as a Black Eagle or Golden Deer, and C Brawling and Heavy Armor as a Blue Lion or Golden Deer in order to do so. While each threshold seems doable when taken individually, attempting to recruit absolutely everyone can prove to be a significant time investment, and can result in stunting Byleth's own growth through Part I due to a lack of focus in any skill.

Once Part II rolls around, things start looking up for Byleth. With more options to develop their strengths thanks to being able to take advanced drills from students, Byleth's strengths as a unit can grow much faster depending on the desired build. If you do not want to remain in Enlightened One, Byleth's well-rounded stats and lack of banes allows them to take on nearly any role in the army you want. Wyvern Lord is an excellent option for pure physical power and mobility, while Gremory is an excellent magical option, though the latter is only available to female Byleth.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

There are two different variations of Byleth available to Heroes, one male, one female, both based on their appearances in Three Houses Part I. Female Byleth became available for summoning by players on July 22, 2019 as part of the summoning event surrounding the Cohort of the Dead update. Male Byleth has been announced for release on or after July 26, 2019 to coincide with the release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses; players who purchase Three Houses on or before June 29, 2020 will be able to receive a free copy of the normal variation of male Byleth. Male Byleth will first be made available for regular summoning during the Mythic Hero Sothis banner, although he himself is not the Mythic Hero in question.

Endings

Byleth's paired endings with Sothis are identical to their solo endings.

Silver Snow and Verdant Wind

Byleth's ending title is "Wandering Flame" in Silver Snow and "Ruler of Dawn" in Verdant Wind.

Byleth, Wandering Flame (Silver Snow)
Byleth defeated those who slither in the dark and put down the crazed Immaculate One. In the aftermath of the loss of Fódlan's great leading figures, he/she ascended the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. In his/her heart lived the indelible hope that their efforts would one day yield an era in which the people knew true peace and the horrors of war were a hazy memory of the past.

Byleth, Ruler of Dawn (Verdant Wind)
Together, Byleth and Claude sent the Fell King Nemesis, a foe from a bygone age, back to the flames of eternity from whence he came. Afterward, Claude left Fódlan, leaving Byleth to ascend the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. As he took his schemes and dreams and efforts to a far-off land, he hoped dearly that their joint efforts would one day allow for a world where all of humanity can coexist in peace and harmony, regardless of borders or bloodlines.

Byleth, Ruler of Dawn & Claude, King of Unification
After ascending the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth sought to rebuild the war-torn towns and villages and to help guide the reformation of the Church of Seiros. After a few months of peace, remnants of the Imperial army joined with those who slither in the dark and marched upon the capital city of Derdriu. The new kingdom lacked the power to repel the invaders, but when defeat seemed imminent, a battle cry rang out from the east. Claude, the newly-crowned King of Almyra, led a mighty army that broke through the rebel forces with ease. This show of solidarity forever altered the course of history, heralding a new age of unity.

Byleth, Wandering Flame / Ruler of Dawn & Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles
After ascending to the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced her marriage to Ferdinand, who had assumed his inherited position as Duke Aegir. Ferdinand overcame a slew of obstacles to reform his territory and that of House Hrym. He chose not to accept an official position in service to Byleth, instead advising her only informally as a spouse. History books extol Ferdinand's success as a lord of his territories, but make no mention of his marriage. Thus, half of his life's work is lost to time.

Byleth, Wandering Flame / Ruler of Dawn & Linhardt, Sleepy Crest Scholar
After ascending to the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced his/her marriage to Linhardt. The people of Fódlan placed high expectations on their leader's spouse, but to their consternation, Linhardt spent most of his time fishing, relaxing, and researching Crests. Fortunes turned when Byleth discovered a document, hidden away on Linhardt's desk, which provided a ground-breaking discovery. Cast unwittingly into prominence, Linhardt was put to work in earnest. In return for his service, he demanded longer naps in the company of his spouse.

Byleth, Wandering Flame / Ruler of Dawn & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
After ascending to the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced his marriage to Bernadetta. Many were concerned that the new leader of House Varley would do little more than hide, but she in fact followed the new king wherever he went and provided him with constant counsel. She never did overcome her shyness, however, and it is said that the aspiring advisers who frightened her were quickly turned away. Because the ones she liked performed well in their service to the people, Bernadetta was widely believed to have a discerning eye.

Byleth, Wandering Flame / Ruler of Dawn & Dorothea, Devoted Heart
After ascending the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced his marriage to Dorothea. The former songstress resolved to stay out of the public eye, keeping to herself and her family, but as Byleth worked tirelessly to restore Fódlan, she did offer advice from time to time. It is said that her experience growing up as a commoner provided a useful perspective. Many years later, her diary was uncovered, revealing the full extent of the happy life the couple shared. The love poems that they wrote to one another were published as a collection.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
After ascending the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced his marriage to Annette. His wife actively contributed to his endeavors, and it is said that her wisdom was heavily relied upon during Fódlan's restoration and development. Despite her lofty position, she was known to occasionally step in as a guest speaker at the Royal School of Sorcery, where she educated many renowned sages. Though her talents were widely respected, it is said she was always a bit accident-prone. Charming tales endure of her husband saving her from countless kitchen explosions, but it is unknown whether these are fact or purely fiction.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
Byleth announced his engagement to Lysithea shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Before they were officially wed, she returned home, helped her father to restore Ordelia territory, and offered the land up to be governed directly by the new kingdom. Once the affairs of House Ordelia were in order, Lysithea finally married and became queen. Even without her Crests, she proved more than capable in the role, applying her great insight and intelligence toward a better Fódlan. When the rebuilding effort was complete, the couple and their children enjoyed long and peaceful lives.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Byleth announced an engagement to Marianne shortly after being named leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Before they were officially wed, Marianne first returned home to prepare for the ceremony and to study oration and management under her adoptive father. She returned under the Great Tree Moon, and became queen of a restored Fódlan in a grand wedding. The kingdom experienced remarkable growth thereafter, and while Byleth became known as a leader of incredible wisdom, few people of the time understood the depth of the queen's influence.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Hilda, Free Spirit
Byleth announced his marriage to Hilda shortly after becoming ruler of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. As queen, Hilda rarely took part in politics herself, but she nevertheless contributed greatly to the restoration of Fódlan by recommending exceptional people to influential positions. Her hobby of creating fashionable accessories also bore fruit, as her designs achieved widespread popularity, and she created the first artisan academy in Fódlan. The school produced many talented craftsmen, one of whom created a statue that expertly captured the king's delight at receiving the gift of a bracelet from the queen.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Byleth announced his marriage to Leonie shortly after becoming the leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Though she accepted the status of queen, Leonie disliked the pageantry of the position and refused to part with her weapons. She avoided court and instead founded the Jeralt Company, and elite group of soldiers hand-picked from the royal guard. They mostly busied themselves by hunting down bandits and monsters, but they also stopped the remnants of the Imperial army from organizing a revolt. It is rumored that one knight of rare skill who fought alongside Leonie in the Jeralt Company was none other than the king himself.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Seteth, Heir of Purpose
After ascending the throne as the first queen of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth appointed Seteth as her prime minister. As they set about the grand task of restoring Fódlan, the prime minister's strictness combined with the queen's magnanimity won the people over easily. Their personalities complemented one another perfectly in dealings with obstinate lords. When their long work was done, they finally announced their marriage, to the shock and delight of their subjects. The people considered themselves truly blessed to be governed by such a union.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Flayn, Slumbering Princess
Byleth announced his marriage to Flayn shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Flayn did not get involved in government affairs, but instead focused on making frequent public appearances, where her calm and pleasant demeanor helped endear the new leaders to the people. When Fódlan was finally restored, the couple left the throne to their children and retired to a royal villa on the Rhodos Coast of western Fódlan. They spent their remaining years there in peace, fishing a great deal. It is said that no matter their age, they always retained a youthful appearance.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Shamir, Distant Archer
Byleth announced his marriage to Shamir shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. While the king focused on the rebuilding effort, Shamir became his bodyguard and confidant. She even acted as captain of the royal guard, and became known as a watchful and trustworthy queen. As a couple, their daily lives were busy indeed, and both were famously taciturn, but it is said that they cherished their quiet time together—especially once they began to have children.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Catherine, Free Knight
Byleth announced his marriage to Catherine shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. While the king focused on the rebuilding effort, Catherine worked as his bodyguard, and when the situation called for military force, she mobilized the troops and went to battle. Under her watchful eye, Fódlan entered a new era of peace. A common saying among the people was that the king of Fódlan had two weapons: the Sword of the Creator, and his fearsome wife.

Byleth, Wandering Flame & Rhea
After finally saving both Fódlan and Rhea from crisis, Byleth ascended the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. From his/her temporary residence at Garreg Mach Monastery, he endeavored to restore and develop Fódlan. Having narrowly escaped death, Rhea took time to recover her strength before returning to her role as archbishop. Upon her return, she applied herself to rehabilitating the church and helping those who had suffered because of the war. Thereafter, the two worked closely to forge new policies and achieve progress for Fódlan. The pair's collective work came to be thought of as nothing short of miraculous.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Cyril, Limitless Potential
Byleth declared the founding of the United Kingdom of Fódlan at Garreg Mach and ascended the throne as its first leader. Cyril served as a chamberlain, supervising all general affairs. With the expansion of the kingdom, it was eventually decided that the queen would move to a new royal capital. Cyril wished to accompany her, but was ordered to enroll in the newly reopened Officers Academy. Though reluctant, he complied. A year later, after consistently demonstrating great wisdom and maturity, he won the queen's heart, and they announced their abrupt marriage. The move surprised many, but no one was as shocked as Cyril himself was pleased.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights
After ascending the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced her marriage to Sylvain, who had become the new Margrave Gautier. Sylvain was a valued ally who assisted his wife in her new role, both publicly and privately. Most of all, it is said that his cunning manner of speech was a great asset for fostering relations between the Church of Seiros, Fódlan, and surrounding regions. Though known as a philanderer in youth, Sylvain happily settled down after marriage and became a gentle and devoted husband and father. The two had many children whom they doted on equally, regardless of whether or not they bore a crest.

Byleth, Ruler of Dawn/Wandering Flame & Ashe, Arrow of Justice
When Byleth ascended the throne of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Ashe served the new leader faithfully - first as a knight aide, and later as a husband. The queen, with help from the Church of Seiros, put much toward the rebuilding effort with particular attention paid to relief for orphans in the form of food, beds, and even schooling. It is said that these compassionate deeds were all Ashe's suggestions, but the modest knight always gave the credit to his beloved wife.

Azure Moon

Byleth, Guardian of Order
Byleth helped Dimitri to finally crush the ambitions of the Empire. After the war, Rhea stepped down from her role as archbishop, and Byleth swore to lead the Church of Seiros in her stead. He/She helped to guide the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus as it brought leadership to the newly unified Fódlan and worked tirelessly to create a peaceful world free from the shackles of oppression.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Dimitri, Savior King
Paired with the end of the war, the joyous marriage of Byleth, the newly-appointed archbishop, and Dimitri, the newly-crowned king of Faerghus, gave the people of Fódlan much to celebrate. The two were devoted to improving life for the people and to seeking greater wisdom in order to reform the government and the church from the inside out. As leaders of church and state respectively, at times they engaged in heated debate. Even still, when enjoying a long horse ride or a quiet evening, they were not as the world saw them, but rather two adoring spouses, desperately in love. They remained as such for the rest of their days.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles
After taking her place as the new archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced her marriage to Ferdinand, who had assumed his place as Duke Aegir. The archbishop's husband overcame a slew of obstacles to reform his family's territory and Hrym but took no official position with the church, providing only guidance and support in his capacity as a loving spouse. History books extol Ferdinand's success as a lord of his territories, but they make no mention of his marriage to the archbishop. Thus, half of his life's work is lost to time.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Linhardt, Sleepy Crest Scholar
After taking on the role of archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced his/her marriage to Linhardt. The people placed high expectations on him, but to their consternation, Linhardt spent most of his time fishing, relaxing, and researching Crests. Fortunes turned when Byleth discovered a document containing a ground-breaking discovery hidden away on Linhardt's desk. Cast unwittingly into prominence, Linhardt was put to work in earnest. In return for his service to the church, he demanded longer naps with the archbishop.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Ashe, Arrow of Justice
When Byleth became the new archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Ashe served her faithfully—first as a knight and aide, and later as a husband. With help from Faerghus, the archbishop put much toward the rebuilding effort with particular attention paid to relief for orphans in the form of food, beds, and even schooling. It is said that these compassionate deeds were all Ashe's suggestions, bet the modest knight always gave the credit to his beloved wife.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights
After becoming the new archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced her marriage to Sylvain, heir to House Gautier. Sylvain was a valued ally who assisted his wife in her new role, both publicly and privately. He achieved a great deal, including fostering relations with Faerghus and helping to institute sweeping organizational changes within the church. Though known as a philanderer in his youth, Sylvain happily settled down after marriage. By the time he inherited the title of Margrave Gautier, he was a gentle and devoted husband. It is said that those who knew him in his youth wondered what sort of spell the archbishop had cast on him.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
After becoming the new archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced his marriage to Annette. His wife actively contributed to his endeavors, and it is said that her wisdom was heavily relied upon during Fόdlan's restoration and development. Despite her lofty position, she was known to occasionally step in as a guest speaker at the Royal Academy of Sorcery, where she educated many renowned sages. Though her talents were widely respected, it is said that she was a bit accident-prone. Charming tales endure of her husband saving her from countless kitchen explosions, but it is unknown whether these are fact or purely fiction.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Gilbert, Veteran Patriot
When Byleth took on the role of archbishop in Rhea's place, he/she devoted himself/herself to official business as the new leader of the Church of Seiros. Reaching an agreement with the Kingdom, he/she worked tirelessly on the restoration and development of all of Fódlan. Behind his/her achievements was the knight Gustave, formerly known as Gilbert of the Knights of Seiros, who remained always by the archbishop's side. Byleth came to rely on Gustave for nearly everything. It is said that he/she continued to call upon Gustave for instruction and advice well into his retirement.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Shamir, Distant Archer
Byleth announced his marriage to Shamir shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. While the archbishop focused on the rebuilding effort, Shamir became his bodyguard and confidant. She even acted as a deputy captain of the Knights of Seiros, and in that capacity, became quite popular. As a couple, their daily lives were busy indeed, and both were famously taciturn, but it is said that they cherished their quiet time together—especially once they began to have children.

Crimson Flower

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon
Byleth fought alongside Edelgard to bring an end to the tyranny of a godlike being. Though he/she was wounded in the battle and lost the power of the progenitor god, he/she remained determined to walk his/her destined path. With his/her legendary blade in hand, he/she will never stop standing against those who slither in the dark until Fódlan at last knows everlasting peace.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Edelgard, Flame Emperor
Byleth and Edelgard ended the tyranny of a godlike being. Byleth was wounded and lost the power of the progenitor god, but it mattered not, as <he/she> and Edelgard had each other. To ensure lasting peace, the two fought against those who slither in the dark, and to ensure a society where people can rise and fall by their own merits, they spent their lives reforming the antiquated class system. They achieved much in their time together, and it is said that they were sometimes spotted leaving the palace to privately enjoy the world they had created. How they spent those precious moments, none but the two of them will ever know.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Hubert, Emperor's Confidant
After a fierce battle, Byleth and Edelgard finally brought the tyranny of a godlike being to an end. Though wounded in conflict and stripped of divine power, Byleth continued to fight alongside the emperor to bring true peace. Hubert joined them in this fight, fulfilling his promise to confront those who slither in the dark head-on. In that darkness, Byleth and Hubert formed an unbreakable bond. It is said that, as a married couple, they were totally inseparable.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles
Byleth and Ferdinand celebrated their marriage with a lavish wedding, but almost immediately afterward, the battle with those who slither in the dark began in earnest. After being named Duke Aegir, Ferdinand overcame a slew of obstacles to help House Hrym and his family's territory recover. At the same time, he fought alongside his spouse for a true, lasting peace in Fódlan. History books extol Ferdinand's success as a lord of his territories, but they do not make mention of the hard-fought battles he endured alongside his wife. Thus, half of his life's work is lost to time.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Linhardt, Ragamuffin Sage
Though grateful for the end of the war, Byleth and Linhardt were disappointed to see that there was no time to relax. The fight against those who slither in the dark began immediately, and Linhardt abandoned his territory to help fight for a world of peace and quiet. Though the struggle was bitter, he took heart in the knowledge that once it was over, he and Byleth could spend the rest of their days in leisure, chasing idle pursuits far away from the stage of battle.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
Almost as soon as Byleth and Bernadetta were finally wed, the battle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Many were concerned that the new leader of House Varley would do little more than hide, but she fell in alongside her new husband and followed him everywhere, fighting to bring lasting peace to Fódlan. Forced to throw herself into one terrifying battle after another, Bernadetta developed such a tough character, it is said that absolutely nothing could frighten her.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Dorothea, Devoted Heart
Almost immediately after the modest wedding ceremony between Byleth and Dorothea was over, the battle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Dorothea chose not to take the field of battle with a weapon but rather to tend the household in her spouse's absence and provide emotional support to his effort to bring lasting peace to Fódlan. Many years after the war had ended, Dorothea's diary was uncovered, revealing the full extent of the happy life the couple shared. The love poems that they wrote to one another were published as a collection.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Caspar, Hotheaded General
Almost immediately after Byleth and Caspar had celebrated their marriage in style, the battle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. As the new Minister of Military Affairs, Caspar worked with Byleth to command the Imperial army and bring peace to Fódlan. His impulsive bravery, tempered by his spouse's more level head, proved instrumental to victory in a great many battles. Their troops became known most of all for their ability to laugh in the face of danger.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Petra, Seafaring Princess
As Byleth set out to fight those who slither in the dark, Petra left the throne of Brigid to her family to follow him. The pair fought many hard battles together against this terrifying enemy before finally emerging victorious after the long war. Finally able to breathe easy, they took up residence in the city of Nuvelle, which lies on the western fringe of Fódlan, where they enjoyed the same waters that touch her homeland of Brigid. As their love grew, so did their mastery of each other's native language.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon and Mercedes, Benevolent Soul
Byleth and Mercedes wed in haste, that they might better focus on their battle against those who slither in the dark. The struggle was long and arduous, but their passionate love supported them through it. When at last the fight was done, they moved to a small village in the Faerghus region and started an orphanage. There they took in and raised children who had lost their families in the war, regardless of their blood or circumstances of birth. It is said that Mercedes was never happier than when she was surrounded by smiling children, free of all worry.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Annette, Bloomed Overachiever
When the fighting was over and the Officers Academy was reopened, Byleth was reinstated as a professor. His wife, Annette, took on a position alongside him teaching sorcery, and the couple spent many years educating and guiding generations of students. In their later years, they attempted to retire to a quiet life in a village near Annette's hometown. That quickly proved to be too quiet of a life for them, and so they opened up a local school and resumed teaching. They continued on as educators until the end of their long and happy lives.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Ingrid, Stalwart Knight
When the war at last came to an end, Byleth and his wife, Ingrid, relocated to her hometown. Galatea territory had been seized by the Empire, but the emperor granted Ingrid's request to retain governance of it. She and her husband were initially received with skepticism, but together they worked hard to reform the territory and address its food shortages. Through hard work, pure grit, and a truly knightly dedication to the people, they were able to transform the barren landscape into what would, decades later, become known as the most fertile grounds in all of Fódlan.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Sylvain, Sincerest of Knights
When the fighting was over, Byleth and Sylvain were married. As the new leaders of House Gautier, they focused their efforts on the restoration of northern Fódlan, which had been deeply scarred by the ravages of war. Once this task was complete, they set their sights on improving relations with the Sreng people in an effort to remove the perceived need for the power of Crests. This accomplishment took a great deal of hard work, but the two refused to give up on their ideals. In time, the two had a large and loving family. They lived happily and loved their children equally, regardless of whether or not they bore a Crest.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Ashe, Arrow of Justice
Byleth and Ashe, after seeing the war through to its end, continued the fight against those who slither in the dark. Supporting one another through that long, hard fight grew their love until they became totally inseparable. When the fight was finally done, they departed together on a journey to heal the world, one person at a time. No records exist of their journey, but the legend of this loving and charitable couple lives on in folktales.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Felix, Meandering Sword
Byleth and Felix were engaged to be married soon after the Battle of Fhirdiad. The war against those who slither in the dark was long and arduous, but they found solace always in one another. When the fighting was finally done, they held a modest wedding ceremony and entered a new life together as husband and wife. Where they went afterward is not known, but it is widely believed that they traveled the world as mercenaries, side by side, blades in hand.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Lysithea, Scholar of Misfortune
Almost immediately after Byleth and Lysithea had celebrated their engagement, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Together they fought tirelessly to bring the war to an end so that Fódlan could have lasting peace. Afterward, they left the Imperial army for Ordelia territory, where they were officially wed. After restoring their war-torn land, the couple vanished from the public eye, along with Count Ordelia and his wife. No records remain of their lives after that, but it is rumored that they retired to a peaceful life in Derdriu, making sweets.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Marianne, Survivor of the Curse
Almost immediately after Byleth and Marianne had celebrated their engagement, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Together they fought tirelessly to bring the war to an end so that Fódlan could have lasting peace. Afterwards, they left the Imperial army and were officially wed in Edmund territory. In time, the pair grew into first-rate politicians under the tutelage of Margrave Edmund himself. With the emperor's blessing, they annexed part of Riegan territory, including Derdriu, and used their influence to improve relations and expand trade with foreign nations. Their work greatly contributed to the restoration of the Empire.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon and Hilda, Free Spirit
(Note: Unused in the final game) Almost immediately after Byleth and Hilda finished their gorgeous wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. They fought tirelessly to bring lasting peace to Fódlan, and afterward retired from the Imperial army to Goneril territory. Hilda's hobby of creating fashionable accessories bore fruit, and she leveraged her husband's reputation as a hero to create the first artisan academy in Fódlan. The school produced many talented craftsmen, one of whom created a statue that expertly captured the hero's delight at receiving the gift of a bracelet from his wife.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Almost immediately after Byleth and Leonie had finished their lively wedding ceremony, the struggle against those that slither in the dark began in earnest. Leaving the Black Eagle Strike Force behind, the pair formed a new group called the Jeralt Company and invited all their friends and allies to join them. The group fought all across Fódlan, cementing the Empire's victory and cleaning up its enemies. With Fódlan secure, all but two members of the Jeralt Company returned to their homes. The couple continued their careers as mercenaries, taking on all kinds of tasks, from monster hunting to tavern security. Their strength and humility were well loved.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Ignatz, Worldy Artist
Byleth and Ignatz celebrated their marriage with a small but lively wedding. Almost immediately afterward, the battle with those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Ignatz supported his wife not only as a general, but also as an artist, wielding his brush to capture the image of her fighting alongside the emperor. His most famous series of paintings, called Chronicles of a Hero, influenced future artists for generations to come—but it is said that his most precious work was one from his early days, entitled Descent of the Goddess. It is believed that he used his beloved wife as a reference for the beautiful visage depicted in that scene.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Raphael, Beast of Leicester
Byleth and Raphael celebrated their marriage with a small but lively wedding. Almost immediately afterward, the battle with those who slither in the dark began in earnest, and Raphael devoted himself wholly to his wife's protection until the chaos of war was finally quelled. It is said the great affection between the two was viewed by many as a symbol of the new era of peace that followed. They were long remembered, even after they stepped back from the public eye, thanks to portraits painted by Raphael's sister, Maya.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose
Soon after Byleth and Lorenz had celebrated their marriage in style, the battle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. After fighting hard to bring true peace to Fódlan, Lorenz took over as head of House Gloucester, and he and his wife focused their efforts on restoring the territory. They had an active political and military life over the years, working together to overcome many hardships. After decades of dedicated service to the people, Lorenz grew weak and retired. Byleth followed suit, and they entrusted House Gloucester to their son. It is said that he was the spitting image of his father, right down to his signature red rose.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Shamir, Distant Archer
Shortly after Byleth and Shamir had finished their modest and stately wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. The pair fought in many battles together, and Shamir lent her talent and experience as a sniper for the Knights of Seiros to the cause of lasting peace for Fódlan. As a couple, their daily lives were busy indeed, and both were famously taciturn, but it is said that they cherished their quiet time together-especially once they began to have children.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Manuela, Divine Songtress
Very soon Byleth and Manuela had finished their grand and elaborate wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. The pair fought many battles together, but Manuela had to leave the front lines when she discovered she was with child. Though they spent many days apart, the family reunited once true peace had come to Fódlan. The happiness of their family was plain to see on the faces that were immortalized in their family portraits.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Hanneman, Father of Crestology
Very soon after Byleth and Hanneman had finished their quiet wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. The pair fought in many battles, eventually bringing true peace to Fódlan. Afterwards, they worked together to pursue Hanneman's goal to determine the workings of the Crests and to do away with the inequality caused by them. Their research resulted in magical tools which could be used even without the aid of Crests. The Father of Crestology and his spouse earned worldwide renown for devising tools that became a cornerstone of progress.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Alois, Family Man
When all of the fighting was over, Byleth embarked on another wandering journey as a mercenary. She/He traveled all over Fódlan, following her/his father's steps. When she/he at last drifted into Remire Village, she/he was reunited with Alois, who had moved there with his family and was now living on a farm. On Alois's advice, she/he decided to stay a while, and before she/he knew it, five years had passed. She/he fell in love with a kind man/woman in the village, and they had a modest wedding. It is said that Alois was so overcome with emotion on that day that his weeping could be heard from anywhere in the village.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Jeritza, Bloodstained Demon
After the war for Fódlan, Byleth and Jeritza threw themselves fully into Emperor Edelgard's struggle against those who slither in the dark. Though the battle proved vicious, none could stand against the combined might of shining sword and reaper's scythe, and the pair became venerated by history as heroes of Adrestia. Once those who slither in the dark were forever vanquished, the two heroes stole away in secret and vanished without a trace. Their whereabouts thereafter have been the subject of much conjecture by historians.

Fire Emblem Cipher

Byleth is currently featured on eleven cards in Fire Emblem Cipher, five depicting the default male and six depicting the default female. Unlike other characters who can be either male or female depending on the player's choice, such as Corrin or Morgan, Byleth's cards do not include (男) or (女) indicators next to their name, because Byleth's name is slightly different depending on gender. However, since the English version of Fire Emblem: Three Houses does not distinguish Byleth's two forms by name, (Male) and (Female) are included here for the convenience of readers, in the same fashion as characters such as the aformentioned Corrin and Morgan.

"New Teacher of the Officers Academy, Byleth (male)" is, to date, the card with the most different printings in Cipher to date, with six different printings across the eighteenth booster series and five promotional cards. Due to technical limitations, only three of these printings appear in the below infobox (the same is true of a female Byleth card with four printings to date).

Trivia

  • In Heroes, the male version of Byleth is the first hero to be introduced on a Legendary or Mythic banner without actually being a Legendary or Mythic Hero.
  • Chris Niosi was the original English voice actor for male Byleth before being replaced by Zach Aguilar in both Three Houses and Heroes via updates as a result of Niosi's violations of non-disclosure agreements.[8] His voice clips from Heroes as portrayed by Niosi are still available online here.
  • Through using Renown to purchase previously unlocked mastery skills, Byleth is the only character in Three Houses who can have both male and female-exclusive skills at the same time.
    • On the skill purchase menu, Byleth uses the Commoner map sprite to represent any classes that are currently locked out of due to gender.

  1. "However, they all agreed on one thing—your father, and yourself, were a strong pair. Warriors to be respected and feared. You, in particular. In fact, many came to know you as the Ashen Demon. They say you would destroy your enemies without a hint of emotion on your face. The mercenaries I spoke to revered you as a living legend of sorts." — Hanneman, in his and Byleth's C support, Fire Emblem: Three Houses

  6. "Rhea: I...created you. And within you is the Crest Stone of the progenitor god... I hid the Crest Stone within your heart in order to revive her. Sweet child... I am sorry. I wanted to see her...see my mother...even if it meant doing that which is forbidden.
Byleth: What does it all mean?
Rhea: I thought that I could regain all I had lost, if only I could revive my mother... And so I tried to bring her back by creating a body, and then burying a Crest Stone within it. A young woman I created...my twelfth try after much heartache...was a failure. She grew up lacking the conscience of the progenitor god and fell in love with the captain of the Knights of Seiros. In time, she became pregnant...but she and the child were not able to survive the birth. The child she bore was not breathing, and she herself was in grave danger. The new mother pleaded with me to take the Crest Stone of the progenitor god from her own body and place it within the baby. If I had done nothing, both mother and child would have died. And so I granted her final wish. As she had hoped, the baby started breathing again... The new life was saved. Your life, sweet child.
    Byleth: ...
Rhea: Well before that, I had saved Jeralt's life using the power of my blood. That means you are the child of a mother born of the progenitor god's Crest Stone and a father who carried my own blood. I knew, deep in my heart, that you would be capable of housing the conscience of the progenitor god. I was right... And yet, she merely gifted her power to you and then disappeared once more. My dearest wish did not come true...but here you are. You alone wield the power of the progenitor god.

  7. "Do you recall your father's diary? He said you were a child who never cried out nor laughed. I think I am the one to blame. I must have been asleep, but even then, I feel I was a part of you." — Sothis, Fire Emblem: Three Houses
