The Absent Emperor/Script
Duke Aegir orders Count Bergliez to hold the line while he and Edelgard retreat to Garreg Mach Monastery. Count Bergliez offers his son Caspar the chance to desert, but Caspar remains resolute in standing by his father. Meanwhile, Seteth reports that Duke Aegir has halted his advance and is wandering the Garreg Mach region for no readily apparent reason. The Kingdom army decides to leverage their superior numbers and brute-force their way through Count Bergliez's troops. Shez realizes that their power is identical to that of the hostile mages and that all signs point to Arval being the being named Epimenides that Myson spoke of. A captured Imperial noble confirms that Duke Aegir is now Thales' puppet, Thales is in truth the same man as Lord Arundel, and Edelgard is nothing more than Duke Aegir and Thales' slave. Dimitri vows to bring Thales to justice.
Duke Aegir, having lost track of Edelgard, elects to flee from the approaching Kingdom army. The Kingdom breaks through the rearguard and kills Duke Aegir. If Jeralt was slain previously, Byleth gives control of their body to Sothis so that she can exact revenge on Shez. The Sothis-possessed Byleth appears after the battle to claim Shez's head, but Shez battles and finally slays the Ashen Demon. Arval celebrates their victory and notes that they feel like they have finally completed a seemingly endless quest, but Shez only feels hollow. Afterwards, Dimitri elects to table their search for Edelgard and continue the march towards Garreg Mach. If Jeralt and Byleth were recruited by the Kingdom, Shez and Byleth decide to continue searching for her for a little while longer. As they continue their pursuit, Shez suddenly declares in Arval's voice that "the time has finally come" and attacks Byleth.
