Bernadetta von Varley (pronounced /ˌbɝnə'dɛtə vɒn 'vɑɹli/[key]; Japanese: ベルナデッタ=フォン=ヴァーリ Bernadetta von Varley) is a playable character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. She is a student at the Officers Academy and a member of the Black Eagles.
Biography
Bernadetta is the only daughter of the Varley Dukedom in Adrestia. Her greedy father only ever saw her as "bait for a rich husband". To "train [her] to be a good wife", he tied her to a chair for hours and taught her to be submissive and obedient. He also told her not to go near commoners, much less befriend them. However, Bernadetta ignored this advice and befriended a young commoner boy. When her father found out, the boy was found beaten half to death. Her uncle was kind and caring to her, but he died before she started her studies. In 1180, Bernadetta's mother had a servant stuff Bernadetta into a sack and shipped her to the Officers Academy, already having developed social anxiety and locking herself in her room when not attending class or eating meals. Thus, Bernadetta became enrolled in the Officers Academy at Garreg Mach Monastery, joining the Black Eagles, studying and fighting alongside them.
After the timeskip, if Bernadetta is a member of Byleth's class, she returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. Should she not be recruited on the Azure Moon and Verdant Wind routes, she rejoins the Adrestian Empire post-timeskip and fights in the Battle at Gronder on Adrestia's side alongside a non-recruited Petra, Hubert and Edelgard; she can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Bernadetta is a surprisingly strong player phase oriented unit who excels on the merit of her fantastic combat arts. When first obtained in the Black Eagles, Bernadetta's bases are pretty mediocre, and with a bow equipped she will have an attack speed low enough to put her at risk of being one rounded by early game Thieves, especially on Maddening. Moreover, Bernadetta's strength growth is sub-average and her low HP and defense growths make her ill-suited for the frontlines or taking hits on the enemy phase. However, Bernadetta makes up for these weaknesses in being the only unit in the Black Eagles to start with Curved Shot, which allows her to attack at 3-range, remaining safely behind allies while chipping away or killing enemies. Bernadetta also makes up for her average strength by having one of the best personal skills in the game, Persecution Complex, which boosts her damage output by five if she is below 100% HP. If the skill is active, she essentially has thirteen base strength, putting her damage output exactly on par with Edelgard. Moreover, there are several ways to get Bernadetta below full health safely, such as placing her on damaging terrain, gaining HP on a level up, using a Fruit of Life or Seraph Robe, or by wielding the Devil Axe, Devil Sword, or Cursed Ashiya Sword in combat. If trained to a C+ in Lances, Bernadetta will learn Vengeance, which deals additional damage based on how far below full health Bernadetta is. This combat art has amazing synergy with Berndetta's personal skill as when it is used below full health, it automatically gains +7 might in addition to the HP Bernadetta has lost up to that point. With the proper set-up and a strong lance, Bernadetta can easily one-shot bosses with this combat art. If Bernadetta is given a guard adjutant, which prevents units from dying to a follow-up attack, or has the Blessing gambit used on her, she can safely reach 1 HP and maximize her damage output with the art. A drawback to this strength is that Bernadetta already has low survivability and could easily be killed when running this strategy if she is not given proper support in the form of movement skills, or lacks Canto to reposition herself, or if she is left within range of a ballista or enemy with Bolting. Even outside of annihilating enemies with Vengeance on the player phase, Bernadetta has amazing utility with her bow combat art of Encloser, which freezes the target. This art has immense utility and can prove to be a life-saver on higher difficulties as it allows Bernadetta to lock down threatening foes for a turn, allowing other units to move to get the kill next turn. Bernadetta has plenty of tricks in her kit to ensure she doles out high damage and supports other members of the army and can easily become invaluable.
Bernadetta also possesses the Minor Crest of Indech, which grants her a ten percent chance of striking twice consecutively when using a weapon. While the effect is potentially powerful, its proc rate makes it unreliable. Unfortunately, the Crest of Indech has no relics associated with it, though it does have an associated sacred weapon in the Inexhaustible; however, the bow's healing effect has anti-synergy with Bernadetta's personal skill so it is best that she does not keep it equipped at the end of a turn. Having a Crest at all is somewhat of a double-edged sword for her; since it prevents her from taking ten damage after using a relic, it allows her to more generally use the Lance of Ruin and Lúin outside of nuking enemies with Vengeance, but on the other hand it also prevents her from using said relics' self-damage to safely reduce her own HP.
Since Bernadetta is player-phase oriented and wants to avoid taking damage on the enemy phase, her best promotion pathways focus on giving her Canto as early as possible or on maximizing the damage of her ranged attacks with bows. If you want access to Canto as early as possible, Bernadetta should go from Soldier to Cavalier to Paladin then Bow Knight. Make sure to unlock Bernadetta's budding talent in riding for this path so she will obtain necessary ranks quicker. Note that Paladin has Lancefaire and one more strength and Bow Knight has Bowfaire meaning that both are viable options for Bernadetta's final class, with the former focusing on maximizing damage with Vengeance and the latter maximizing damage output and range for bows. Alternatively, Berndetta could promote to a Pegasus Knight then Falcon Knight to train towards Alert Stance+ while also getting Lancefaire, though this comes at the cost of no access to guard adjutants. To focus on her utility as a bow-wielder and get Encloser as soon as possible, make Bernadetta a Fighter, Archer, then Sniper, followed by Bow Knight. The increased bowrange of this path increases the range of both Curved Shot and Encloser allowing Bernadetta to freeze units from as many as three or four spaces away. Both Sniper and Bow Knight are viable options for Bernadetta's final class as Snipers have exclusive access to the amazing combat art of Hunter's Volley while Bow Knights have more movement and Canto. As a side note, the class mastery skills of Death Blow and Hit +20, obtained from mastering Brigand and Archer respectively, are immensely useful for Bernadetta regardless of her chosen class promotion. While she has a weakness in axes, Bernadetta can still easily get to a D+ to have a chance at getting the class certification for Brigand and the +6 to damage output on player phase is well worth the effort of doing so. On the other hand, Hit +20 can boost Berndetta's accuracy just enough for it to be perfect while attacking at 3-range or when using Vengeance with low-accuracy lances like the Lance of Ruin.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are three different variations of Bernadetta available to Heroes, each based on her appearance in Three Houses Part I. The normal variation of Bernadetta is one of the characters added to the game in the Twisted Reality update, and became available for summoning by players on March 6, 2020. A winter variation of Bernadetta was made available on December 17, 2020 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the A Festival Miracle update; this variation, along with a similar variation of Altina, are notably the first winter variations of characters that are not armored units. A spring-themed variation of Bernadetta was added in the Spring Eternal update, and was first available to be summoned on March 6, 2023.

Personality and character
In White Clouds, Bernadetta is portrayed as a hikikomori (which, in the English localization of Three Houses, is translated as "recluse"). Bernadetta is extremely shy, and only feels comfortable at home or in her dorm room. When not attending lectures, she hides in her room and indulges in her hobbies, such as eating cake and singing. Bernadetta's supports often portray her as sheepish, most of her C-supports have her misinterpret what the other character is saying and runs away screaming.
In part 2, Bernadetta seems to have grown more sociable and is seen outside of her room much more frequently during the 'explore' sections of the monastery, however, she still frequently expresses that she is much more comfortable in her room than around a group of people.
Bernadetta shows interest in art, singing, carnivorous plants, sweets such as cakes, and stuffed bears.

Endings
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner (single ending)
As soon as Bernadetta inherited House Varley from her father, she withdrew from all political discourse and focused solely on the management of her own territory. Because of this and her penchant for spending long periods of time in "hibernation," she became known throughout the house's history as the "Bear of Varley."
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
After ascending to the throne as the first leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan, Byleth announced his marriage to Bernadetta. Many were concerned that the new leader of House Varley would do little more than hide, but she in fact followed the new king wherever he went and provided him with constant counsel. She never did overcome her shyness, however, and it is said that the aspiring advisers who frightened her were quickly turned away. Because the ones she liked performed well in their service to the people, Bernadetta was widely believed to have a discerning eye.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner (Azure Moon)
After taking on the role of archbishop of the Church of Seiros, Byleth announced his marriage to Bernadetta. Many were concerned that the new leader of House Varley would do little more than hide, but she in fact followed the archbishop wherever he went and provided him with constant counsel. She never did overcome her shyness, however, and it is said that aspiring advisers who frightened her were quickly turned away. Because the ones she liked performed well in their service to the church, Bernadetta was widely believed to have a discerning eye.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner (Crimson Flower)
Almost as soon as Byleth and Bernadetta were finally wed, the battle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. Many were concerned that the new leader of House Varley would do little more than hide, but she fell in alongside her new husband and followed him everywhere, fighting to bring lasting peace to Fódlan. Forced to throw herself into one terrifying battle after another, Bernadetta developed such a tough character, it is said that absolutely nothing could frighten her.
Edelgard, Flame Emperor & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
When Bernadetta inherited House Varley from her father, she tried to withdraw from politics and remain within the bounds of her territory, but Edelgard, the new Adrestian emperor, would not allow it. Instead, she demanded that Bernadetta counsel her in governing Fódlan. It is said that the emperor made this choice to keep herself from being too detached, and that Bernadetta was all too happy to provide a more emotional perspective now and again. The people of Enbarr could always tell when the two were meeting by the sound of Bernadetta's panicked voice ringing out from the palace.
Hubert, Emperor's Confidant & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
The marriage between Hubert, Minister of the Imperial Household, and Bernadetta, leader of House Varley, was so surprising to the public that it was much talked about even outside of political circles in the capital. Bernadetta took the opportunity to survey the far reaches of the new Adrestian Empire, and in her absence, Hubert took well to the management of Varley territory. They proved to be an astonishingly good match, working together to protect Fódlan from the shadows. It is said that they showed their affection for one another by wearing matching embroidered flowers.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Bernadetta renounced her claim to House Varley. She married Ferdinand, the new Duke Aegir, and the two contributed to relief efforts by instituting reforms across their Dukedom. Due to the success of those policies, Ferdinand was offered the opportunity to help govern all Fódlan. He accepted, leaving the management of Aegir territory to his wife, while he worked to apply their ideas to the world at large. Since Bernadetta did not like to leave home, Ferdinand's life involved a lot of travel, but it is said he always embarked on his return home with a smile.

He accepted, leaving the management of Aegir territory to his wife, while he worked to apply their ideas to the Empire at large. Since Bernadetta did not like to leave home, Ferdinand's life involved a lot of travel to and from the capital, but it is said he always embarked on his return home with a smile on his face.
Linhardt, Sleepy Crest Scholar & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
Linhardt and Bernadetta caused quite the stir after the war when they abandoned their inherited titles and eloped to Garreg Mach. Returning to the monastery, where they were always most comfortable, the couple lived peaceful lives away from the hassle of politics. When the church was fully restored, the Officers Academy reopened, and two eccentric individuals took up professorships there. One was perpetually asleep, or absorbed in absentminded study; the other refused to show herself at all unless it was time to give a lecture.

Linhardt and Bernadetta caused quite the stir after the war when they abandoned their inherited titles and eloped to Garreg Mach. Returning to the monastery, where they were always most comfortable, the couple lived peaceful lives away from the hassle of politics. When the Empire's efforts to restore the church were complete, the Officers Academy reopened, and two eccentric individuals took up professorships there. One was perpetually asleep, or absorbed in absentminded study; the other refused to show herself at all unless it was time to give a lecture.
Caspar, Hotheaded General & Bernadetta, Eternal Loner
After some uncertainty about the details, it was decided that Caspar would marry into Bernadetta's family, seeing as she had claim to House Varley. The two had a chaotic reign, and a marriage to match. Each time Caspar caused some incident, Bernadetta would demand promises as recompense. Over time, these oaths accumulated to such a great number that it became necessary to compile them, and the resulting document came to be known as the "47 Articles of Bernie." Among these Articles was the provision that, when counting their large quantity of children, Caspar was not to accidentally count his wife among them.
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Felix, Meandering Sword (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind, Crimson Flower)
After the war, Felix attempted to set out on his own, but was waylaid by Bernadetta, who begged him not to go. Persuaded to stay, Felix ended up marrying into House Varley, the title of which Bernadetta had inherited. The couple got along smoothly, although it was rumored that in the early years of their marriage, she once had to restrain him physically to prevent him taking a trip to the Oghma Mountains to train. As the years wore on, Bernadetta became more reclusive, and Felix took over many of the day-to-day duties of running the house. Documents from their later years were increasingly signed with the name Felix, Count Varley.
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Felix, The Shield's Successor (Azure Moon)
After the war, Felix inherited the title of Duke Fraldarius from his late father, Rodrigue. He married Bernadetta, who abandoned claim to House Varley in order to start a life with him. After they had finished restoring Fraldarius territory, Felix traveled across Fódlan as the king's right hand. While he was away, Bernadetta handled local affairs while holed up in her room in the castle. The frigid air of northern Faerghus caused her to hide away even more than usual, but whenever her beloved husband returned, she would rush out to greet him.
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Raphael, Beast of Leicester
When Bernadetta first inherited control of House Varley, she hid away and would not dare involve herself in political or administrative affairs. During this time it was Raphael who came to her aid, encouraging her to work through her fear of people. The training period was difficult—"humiliating," according to the journals Bernadetta left behind—but in the end, it had its desired effect. The leader of House Varley became an outgoing and authoritative individual, taking part in public policy. She even took on a very muscular husband.
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose
After the war, Seteth remained at the monastery and dedicated himself to the restoration of the church. He was soon joined by Bernadetta, who abandoned her inheritance to House Varley and took up residence at Garreg Mach to commit to a life as a recluse. As the years wore on, Seteth wrote many fables, first in his spare time, and then later as his main preoccupation. His stories became famous among children throughout Fódlan. As he gained renown, many began to inquire about the wonderful illustrations that accompanied the writing. In response to these questions, Seteth was known to shrug and say, "Ask my wife...if you can find her."
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Jeritza, Bloodstained Demon
After the war for Fódlan, Jeritza threw himself fully into the struggle against those who slither in the dark. Visage masked by the likeness of death itself, he laid waste to his enemies with a scythe that terrified friend and foe alike. When it was all over, he stole away in secret and vanished. At the same time, a mysterious guest arrived in Varley territory, which Bernadetta had inherited from her father. On that day, the reclusive noble and her guest were seen walking the grounds pleasantly together. A rendition of that scene, said to be painted by Bernadetta herself, remains at the estate to this day.
Bernadetta, Eternal Loner & Yuri, Underground Lord
Bernadetta's struggle with anxiety made it difficult for her to take over as the head of House Varley. She became so overwhelmed that when Yuri chanced to visit her domain, she literally grabbed hold of his arm and refused to let go. Baffling as it was for Yuri at the time, this peculiar state of affairs eventually led to marriage. The commonfolk were initially perplexed, but over the years they became grateful for Count Varley's surprising husband. His presence kept her calm and allowed her to deal with her people more frequently and easily. As a result, her talent for governance blossomed and her rule was widely celebrated.

Trivia
- One line of Bernadetta's B-support with Byleth was altered in the 1.0.2 version update.
- Old: "To train me to be a good, submissive wife, he'd do things like tie me to a chair and leave me there all day, challenging me to stay quiet."
- New: "To train me to be a good wife, he'd do things like tie me to a chair."
- During Part II, Bernadetta oddly shares some of her attack voice clips with Hilda.
- Bernadetta's S-Rank illustration was off-model in the initial release, as it depicted her earrings with an incorrect design. This was fixed in Version 1.0.2.
