“ | I'm Julian! One of the bad guys! A Soothsire. Oh! Well, except I'm not anymore. See, now I'm a good guy! Lena gave me a reason to—well, let's just say I've had a change of heart. Hm, not explainin' myself very well, am I? | ” | — Julian, to Marth |
---|
Julian (Japanese: ジュリアン Jurian) is a thief hailing from Macedon and a former member of the Soothsires, the bandits dominating the Samsooth Mountains. During the War of Shadows, he turned on the group upon encountering one of their prisoners, Lena, and escaped the group with her, soon joining Marth's passing army.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Julian was a member of the Samsooth Sires, but betrays them and frees Lena. Both Lena and Julian join Marth's army immediately afterwards. After this point, Julian fulfills the role of a normal thief, opening chests and unlocking doors. Julian can also be used to recruit Rickard, another thief, in chapter six.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Julian is one of two Thieves in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, and besides having a 10% lower speed growth, he is statistically superior in every way to the other Thief, Rickard. However, Thieves in this game are practically useless in combat, as both of them are only able to use Iron, Steel, and Devil Swords and have a 0% weapon level growth, in addition to abysmal bases, so their stats are for the most part only relevant in keeping them from dying on enemy phase. Unfortunately, Thieves are not extremely useful in this game, as Marth can open chests after Chapter 6, and Door Keys are fairly prevalent. However, on maps with several chests, doors, or closed bridges, sometimes deploying Thieves is useful for saving time, so Julian can provide some utility despite being a fairly mediocre unit.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
Book 1
Role
Julian fulfills the same role in Book 1 that he does in the original Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. After rescuing Lena from the Soothsires, he and Lena join up with Marth, with Julian offering his services as a thief to Marth's cause. Once again, he can also be used to recruit Rickard due to their history together.

Book 2
Role
Julian is recruited by visiting the northeastern village in the game's third chapter with Marth. When asked if Lena was with him, he reveals to Marth that Lena had disappeared, and that the disappearance may have been connected to a strange bishop that had been spotted in the village. Marth offers to help look for Lena if Julian were to come with him, and the latter agrees, joining up once again with Altea.
In the same chapter, Julian is needed in order to recruit Matthis from the enemy ranks. Matthis expresses his distaste for the fact that Lena and Julian are seemingly together, though Julian insists that they're not that close, and that he could never be on her level. Satisfied, Matthis joins up with Julian to join in on the search for Lena.
In chapters five and six, Julian can be used to recruit Rickard, but unlike in the War of Shadows, only Julian can recruit him. Rickard explains that he wishes Julian didn't quit the thieving business so they could be partners again, but decides to join Altea's side after Julian persuades him.
Julian is also needed to rescue and recruit Lena in the game's final chapter. If Julian speaks with the currently-possessed Lena, he is able to free her from her curse, recruiting her in the process.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
Julian's role here is the same as his original role in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, with him saving Lena by betraying the Soothsires and joining up with Marth in chapter three. Once again, he can also be used to recruit Rickard in chapter six, as well.
Shadow Dragon does, however, give Julian an additional conversation with Marth during chapter three. If Marth speaks to Julian, the latter poorly attempts to explain that he had betrayed the Soothsires and that he is no longer an enemy. Marth, listening to Julian trip over his own words, stops him and says that he trusts him. Julian is initially taken aback, but Marth explains that he deserves a chance to prove himself as a changed man. Julian thanks Marth for his kindness and the conversation ends.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Julian is the first Thief available in Shadow Dragon. He has very low base stats and abnormally high growths, but neither of these facts are particularly important, as his primary role is to open doors and chests without needing keys. His utility is undercut somewhat when Marth acquires the Fire Emblem, allowing him to open chests on his own. Despite this setback, Julian can still be useful, as he can open chests while Marth advances towards the seize point. This is especially noteworthy in Chapters 15 and 17, where the chests and seize points are on entirely opposite ends of the map, and in Chapters 17x and 19, where there are lots of doors that Marth cannot open but Julian can.
It is not advisable to use Julian for combat, as his low durability, damage output, and E rank in swords make his great growths difficult to properly take advantage of. On lower difficulties, he can survive confrontations with most unpromoted enemies, and his base speed is high enough to prevent him from being double attacked even if he is not trained. Julian has no promotion, but his level cap is 30 as opposed to the usual 20.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Role
Julian's role here is the same as his role in the second book of Mystery of the Emblem. When Marth visits his village in chapter three, he explains that Lena has disappeared and that there were reports of a strange bishop appearing during the night. Wishing to search for Lena, Julian once again joins Marth and the Altean army. He is also able to recruit Matthis and Rickard as he was in Mystery of the Emblem, and is once more needed to save and recruit Lena during the final chapter.
Due to the introduction of support conversations, Julian gets to have conversations with Kris and Rickard that were not present in the original Mystery of the Emblem.

Personality
Julian can generally be described as a "noble thief" character. He is initially willing to get his hands dirty and steal for his own gain, but after meeting Lena, who had been held as a prisoner by the Soothsires, Julian has a change of heart. He helps her escape, making the both of them enemies of the Soothsires in the process, and the pair join up with Marth's army.
After the incident in the Samsooth Mountains, Julian and Lena grow closer, with Julian soon falling in love with her. He realizes, however, that their differences in social standing will likely prevent them from ever being together, as he acknowledges in his recruitment conversation with Matthis. He is a common thief, while she is a noblewoman. Despite being close with her, he addresses Lena formally. While he is aware of his standing, though, he makes an effort to improve himself nonetheless. He quits being a thief and instead aids Lena at her convent after the War of Shadows, turning over a new leaf. This continues up to when he saves Lena from Medeus's control in the War of Heroes, where Lena is the one to propose to him, leaving Julian nearly speechless.
Julian is also conscious of his own physical limitations, being suited for thievery over combat, as shown in his base conversations with Kris in New Mystery of the Emblem. He blames Lena's abduction squarely on himself, as Lena likely chose not to scream and alert him because she thought he would be too weak to win against her abductor. Kris is able to help Julian through this, though, and tells him that Lena likely didn't wish to see him get hurt, regardless of his own strength.
His support conversations with Rickard also showcase that Julian wishes to help other thieves clean up their acts just as he has. Rickard, his previous partner in crime, still insists on living the life of a thief, but Julian offers to help him find honest work if he ever wants it.
