“ | You fought to save Ylissean lives. My heart says that's enough. | ” | — Chrom, to Robin |
---|
Chrom (pronounced /kɹɑm/[key][2]; Japanese: クロム Chrom) is the prince of the Halidom of Ylisse, the younger brother of its current Exalt Emmeryn, and the elder brother of Princess Lissa. He is a descendant of the legendary Hero-King, bearing the Brand of Naga possessed by his bloodline on his right shoulder, and is the current wielder of Falchion, Ylisse's national treasure. He is the captain of the Shepherds, an Ylissean militia initially convened to combat Plegian encroachment on Ylisse's borders, and led the combined forces of Ylisse and Ferox in wars with Plegia, the Valmese Empire and later the Grimleal, fighting to prevent the resurrection of the Fell Dragon Grima.
Chrom is one of the three main characters of Fire Emblem Awakening, the others being his tactician Robin and his daughter, Lucina. He is also a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as one of the representatives of the Fire Emblem series.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Chrom, as one of the main characters of Fire Emblem Awakening, must be deployed in every chapter other than skirmish scenarios. Chrom, unlike his sister, isn't outstanding when it comes to most negotiations or battle strategy, but he is skilled with the sword and holds onto both of Ylisse's treasures, Falchion and the Fire Emblem. If Chrom dies during any chapter, the player receives a Game Over.
War with Plegia
During the premonition, he and Robin are engaged in a battle with Validar. After the battle, Validar uses the last of his strength to fire dark magic at Chrom, who is pushed aside by Robin and is attacked instead. The dark magic corrupts Robin and causes them to strike Chrom with a lightning bolt, killing him.
In the opening cinematic for the next chapter, Chrom, joined by Frederick and Lissa, find Robin laying in a field, with no memory other than Chrom's name. Frederick is immediately suspicious, so Chrom suggests taking Robin to the next town to sort things out. However, the town is shown to be on fire and being raided by bandits, so Chrom instead takes the time to help the town. With Robin's help, Chrom sees Robin as a friend.
In the next chapter, Chrom meets the enigmatic masked "Marth" during a cataclysm and Robin meets Chrom's older sister, the Exalt of Ylisse, Emmeryn. Robin is then introduced to Chrom's militia, the Shepherds, and Chrom leads them to deal with the newly named Risen in the following chapter. Chrom is then told to ask Ferox for help, which turns into a battle of strength before he can meet the reigning Khan. After meeting with Flavia, she offers to help Chrom with the battle against the Risen if Chrom can defeat Basilio's swordsman, which ends up being the masked Marth from before, and win her the throne. After the match, Chrom learns Lissa's friend, Maribelle, has been taken by Plegia forces and he meets King Gangrel. While Emmeryn tried to negotiate the situation, Chrom gets involved in a battle, which ends in a declaration of war between Plegia and Ylisse.
The war soon turns into an assassination attempt on Emmeryn, which is prevented by Marth's appearance, and Chrom discovers Marth is actually a woman in disguise. After Chrom joins with Marth to remove the remaining enemy forces from his castle, Chrom moves toward Plegia, to be ambushed and then discovers Emmeryn is to be put to death, so he launches a rescue mission. The rescue fails and Emmeryn takes her own life to prevent Chrom from handing over the Fire Emblem to Gangrel. As Chrom deals with this loss, he moves toward Plegia to defeat the Mad King Gangrel for good.
The Valm crisis
Two years later, Chrom will become the ruler of Ylisse along with his wife. At this point in the game, he will automatically be married to his highest-ranked female support who is not dead, married to someone else, or Lissa. If no such partner exists he marries a generic Maiden. He has a daughter named Lucina, who he and his wife leave at Ylisstol to assist Regna Ferox with the attacking army from the continent of Valm. During chapter 13, Chrom meets with Validar, who is now the king of Plegia, for help, he and Robin meet someone who could be Robin's twin, and discover Marth is actually Chrom's daughter, Lucina, from the future.
After defeating Valm's forces and crossing into the continent, Chrom rescues a woman named Say'ri and she takes the Shepherds to meet Naga's Voice, Tiki. Tiki tells Chrom of the five Gemstones that must be gathered for the Fire Emblem, and she and Basilio give Chrom theirs, and they must be used to seal back Grima, who has returned due to the powers of the Grimleal. After a raid on Fort Steiger and defeating Say'ri's brother, Yen'fay, Chrom and his troops go after Emperor Walhart. Walhart does not go down easily, but after two battles with him, Chrom finishes victoriously.
The Fell Dragon
After Walhart's defeat, Chrom now has to perform the Awakening after gather the remaining Gemstones. However, Validar manipulates Robin into stealing the Fire Emblem from Chrom, and the group barely escapes. In an effort to recover the Fire Emblem, Chrom leads his troops to the Dragon's Table, to find Grima's resurrection is already underway. Breaking through Aversa's troops, Chrom and Robin are separated from the rest of their allies and the events play out similarly to the vision Robin had at the start of the game. However, Robin weakens the lightning bolt that was supposed to kill Chrom, and Robin's doppelganger is revealed to be Robin from the future. The future Robin uses their life force to resurrect Grima and becomes his vessel, so Chrom travels to Mount Prism to perform the Awakening ritual and gain the power needed to Grima. After a final match with Aversa, Chrom and Robin meet up with Grima. If Chrom is the one to land the killing blow, Grima returns to slumber for another thousand years. If Robin is the one to deliver the killing blow, they fade away and Chrom spends his time searching for Robin, to find them unconscious in a field once more.

Role
There are eight variations of Chrom available to Heroes. The normal variation of Chrom is one of the characters available to be summoned by players from the game's initial launch. A spring variation of Chrom was made available between the period of March 30, 2017 through April 14, 2017 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Spring Festival update. A winter variation of Chrom was made available between the period of December 18, 2017 through January 1, 2018 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Winter's Envoy update. A fourth variation of Chrom, here dubbed the "The Branded King" variation after the name of the summoning event he debuted in for lack of a theme common to most other variant characters, was made available on March 9, 2018 as part of the summoning event surrounding the The True Quarry update. A variation of Chrom termed "Crowned Exalt" was first made available to players on February 27, 2020 as the game's twenty-first Legendary Hero. A Valentine's-themed variation of Chrom was made available between the period of February 8, 2022 through March 8, 2022 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Here with Me update; this variation of Chrom is a Duo Hero, teamed up with male Robin. A fallen variation of Chrom—a rearmed hero based on the "Undead King of Despair, Chrom" card from Fire Emblem Cipher—was added in the New Heroes & Reamred Chrom update, and was first available to summon from May 9, 2023.
Additionally, Chrom's Mirage form as depicted in Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE makes an appearance with Itsuki.

Personality
Chrom has been described by others as a direct man, one who possesses deep conviction in his chosen path.[5] He cares greatly for those around him and in his service, paying close attention to them and their needs.[6] He believes that as a leader, he must show strength in the face of fatigue and the burden of great work, so as to be an example and inspiration to others.[7] While he has the utmost respect for Emmeryn's pacifistic ways, and following her death seeks to honor her legacy, he believes that in the end force will be necessary to counteract those who would endanger a peaceful world and that if he must, he is willing to fight and kill to defend the peace.[8]
Chrom has the utmost faith in other people, particularly his friends and allies. No matter the circumstance or risk, he will attempt to aid anyone in need he encounters, fully aware of and willing to risk any potential consequences if it means.[9] His interest in aiding people goes beyond merely helping them: he is always seeking to forge new bonds of friendship and that doing so improves himself, his army and the people of the world.[10] He believes strongly in the power of unity, attesting that a united front tightly bound by friendship and trust can together overcome even the most powerful of individuals.[11]

Accompanying the costume is a pair of weapons: Falchion and Fire Emblem (under the name 封剣ファルシオンI Sealed Sword Falchion I) as a shield and single-handed sword combo, and Nidhogg (双聖器ニーズヘッグI Sacred Twin Nidhogg I) as a bow weapon.[12]
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U

Chrom appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U as part of Robin's Final Smash, in which Robin summons him to pair up to attack opponents. He also appears alongside Robin in one of their victory animations. The games' director, Masahiro Sakurai, commented in his Famitsu column that he considered including Chrom as a playable character in his own right, but dropped him in favour of Robin, who he felt offered a more unique moveset, while Chrom was considered to be just "another plain-old sword-wielder like Marth and Ike".[13] Chrom also makes an appearance in an easter egg for Pit, giving him advice and information about Robin, while being on the receiving end of Palutena's and Viridi's jokes, who echo Sakurai's reasons for Chrom not making it to the playable roster. In both versions, there is also a Chrom trophy available.
Chrom's appearance serves as the basis of a downloadable costume for Mii Swordfighters. Nintendo also released a QR code for those who wish to have the exact Mii used in the costume's advertising.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
![]() |
This article or section is a short summary of Chrom. SmashWiki features a more in-depth article. |
Chrom makes his first debut as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He is an Echo Fighter of Roy, possessing all of his moves as well as his adaptations of Marth's swordplay. Like Lucina, Chrom's sword is equal in strength across the whole blade, instead of having a hilt sweetspot and a weaker sourspot that Roy does. Aside from this quirk, Chrom also has one other difference from Roy by having an entirely different up special move that is very similar to Ike's Aether.
He also appears in Robin's Final Smash like he did in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and the Mii Fighter outfit and wig based on him return as well, this time as unlockables.
Chrom has performed well in the current metagame. His lack of sourspots makes him more consistent in combos and KOing than Roy while still retaining high speed and power, in exchange for the ability to deliver early KO's due to his lack of sweetspots as well. However his recovery is notably worse than Roy's, and is considered one of the worst in the game, allowing him to be easily gimpable. Nevertheless, he is considered to be a very strong character, being ranked 43rd in the tier list.
In the World of Light, Chrom was vaporized along with everyone else except for Kirby. Chrom can be rescued after defeating Galeem and encountering Dharkon, and can be found in Dharkon's realm.
Special moves
- Flare Blade (Japanese: エクスプロージョン Explosion): Chrom's standard special move. A slamming strike which can be charged for up to five seconds to deal a more powerful blow; at maximum charge, it can one-hit KO most characters at 0% (with few exceptions), but will also damage Chrom himself. A clone of Roy's Flare Blade that utilizes light and shockwave effects instead of flames.
- Double-Edge Dance (Japanese: マーベラスコンビネーション Marvelous Combination): Chrom's side special move. A combination of four sword strikes, which attack in different directions depending on which way the analog stick is pointed for each swipe. A clone of Roy's Double-Edge Dance without fire effects.
- Soaring Slash (Japanese: 翔流斬 Soaring Flow Cut): Chrom's up special move. Chrom unleashes a fast upward slash then leaps into the air, before performing three somersaults with Falchion extended then descending directly downward. The move ends when Chrom hits a surface, the ledge, or falls to the bottom blast zone. The move could be used as a sacrificial KO. Functionally identical to Ike's Aether, with the difference being that Chrom does not throw his sword first.
- Counter (Japanese: カウンター Counter): Chrom's down special move. Chrom assumes a brief defensive stance and will retaliate if struck in this stance, cancelling the foe's attack and dealing to the foe 1.35x the damage Chrom would have sustained.
- Awakening Aether (Japanese: 覺醒天空 Awakening Heavens): Chrom's Final Smash. Chrom rushes forward in a manner similar to Marth's Final Smash, and then reels back before performing Aether on the first person he hits in his path. This Final Smash can catch up to two people.
Palutena's Guidance
Pit: Woah! It's Chrom!
Viridi: He finally made it to the fight!
Palutena: He's the prince of the Halidom of Ylisse... and the descendant of the Hero-King Marth.
Pit: Marth's sword and Chrom's sword are both named Falchion, right? The designs seem a bit different. Are they really the same sword?
Palutena: The sword Chrom wields is Falchion, but Marth's sword is Exalted Falchion.
Viridi: And Lucina's sword is Parallel Falchion.
Pit: Falchion. Falchion. That word makes no sense!
Palutena: Falchion can become the Exalted Falchion once the Fire Emblem brings out its true form.
Pit: If Chrom can fight Marth using a weaker sword, Chrom must be stronger.
Viridi: I wouldn't say that. I mean, Wario launches people with farts. Pretty sure the style of weapon doesn't make a huge difference.
There is no Codec Conversation about Chrom as they are reused from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which Chrom did not appear in.
Spirit data
Chrom's fighter spirit can be obtained either by completing his route in classic mode or buying it in the vault.

Project X Zone 2
Chrom appears, alongside Lucina, Tiki, and Fiora from Xenoblade Chronicles, as a special guest from Nintendo in Project X Zone 2. He and Lucina first appear the chapter "Paralogue 5: The Fire Emblem", where they, along with Valkyrie, Yuri Lowell, and Flynn Scifo have to protect Tiki from the Risen and Kamuz's troops. The map is based on Divine Dragon Grounds from Fire Emblem Awakening.
He and Lucina appear to join the team permanently during "Chapter 20: The Power to Change Fate". After the player reaches the third room in the Great Tree, Kamuz reappears from a Fracture with a group of Risen and his own troops after a few rounds have passed. Chrom and Lucina follow shortly after, appearing next to the third stranded pod. They rescue the allies stuck in the pod, then join the team to fight Kamuz and seal the Summoning Gate.
Bio
Descendant of the Hero-King Marth and prince of the Halidom of Ylisse, a country that worships the divine dragon, Naga.
He wields the legendary sword Falchion, a weapon passed down through the line of kings. He is also the captain of the Shepherds, a militia that he established in order to defend the kingdom.
He is currently fighting to defeat the Risen that have appeared in each region and to prevent the ambitions of the Grimleal. This dark cult is dedicated to the Fell Dragon Grima, a monster who promises to bring about the end of the world.
Chrom is a brave youth with a strong sense of justice and deep affection for his allies. He was initially shaken after learning the truth about Lucina, but he now views her simultaneously as a trustworthy companion and his beloved daughter.
He trains daily with his sword, which often results in considerable destruction to the general vicinity.

Trivia
- Chrom is one of two characters to have dialogue in a support conversation not directly involving him. He appears in Lucina's C and A support conversations with her sibling as well as Ricken and Nowi's C support. Chrom shares this trait with Robin.
- In Awakening, unlike all other characters who simply have their portrait mirrored when facing to the right, Chrom has an entirely different set of portraits for this purpose, due to his asymmetrical design. While there are a few other characters with an asymmetrical design, such as Vaike, Chrom is the only character in Awakening and one of only two in the franchise (the other being Nergal from The Blazing Blade) with this trait.

Chrom |
Possibly from Crom Cruach, a deity of pre-Christian Ireland. The domains of this god are unknown, but he is widely theorized to have been considered a solar deity. An alternative possibility is from 黒む, "turning black" or "turning dark". May also be derived from Chrom/chrom, German, Luxembourgish, Czech, and Polish for chromium. Though indirect, there may also be some inspiration from Crom, a god from the mythos of Conan the Barbarian. |

- ↑ "Perhaps because Chrom is not like Marth. He is much more direct, and committed to what he believes is right. Chrom might more resemble a different ancestor, from the age I was born in. Another great man in their line, from 1000 years before Marth... But the Marth of my time was wise and fair, and won hearts with his kindness." — Tiki, Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑ "I confess I sometimes find myself wishing for a respite. But then I remind myself how much harder it must be for you! Heavy lies the crown and all that, yes? So it's my duty to help you however I can!" — Maribelle, Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑ "Chrom: Y-yes, I'm fine. I just tripped on a pebble. Gods, how embarrassing.
Sumia: It's because you're so exhausted! You've been working too hard lately.
Chrom: I'm fine, Sumia. And besides, we're all tired. Such endless fighting wears on everyone.
Sumia: Chrom, you've no need to don a brave face for my sake. You carry twice the burden of anyone. It's only natural you're exhausted.
Chrom: Heh. You're kind to say so. But in truth, everyone looks to their commander for inspiration and strength. An army is only as stalwart as its leader. The instant I show weakness, we're through.
Sumia: It must be so hard for you...
Chrom: I'll...be fine. And please, don't speak of this conversation to anyone. All right?
Sumia: No-no! Of course not! I would never—
Chrom: Ha ha! At ease. Sumia. And stop worrying so much! It'll take more than a few battles to bring this soldier to his knees." — Sumia and Chrom, Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ "She represents the best of the halidom—the part most worth protecting. She IS peace. But some men would take advantage of that. Men like King Gangrel. The day he understands peace will be the day death gives it to him. ...So perhaps I must be death's agent. Emmeryn would never order him killed, nor would I wish her to." — Chrom, Fire Emblem Awakening
- ↑ "Chrom: Robin, if I see someone hurt or in need, I'm going to help them. That's just who I am, and there's no changing it. Or would you rather I'd left you there, face down in the muck?
Robin: No, of course not. I'm thankful for what you did. I truly am. But it scares me all the same. Chivalry and longevity don't often go hand in hand.
Chrom: Ha! I wish I had a gold coin for every time I got this lecture." — Chrom and Robin (male), Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ "Chrom: You see? And it's not just you, Robin. It's everyone like you. I know going out there exposes me to danger, and I haven't always been careful. But it's a risk I'm willing to take in order to connect with the people. To forge bonds.
Robin: Bonds? Between who?
Chrom: You and me. Me and the others. The villagers we've met, the world we've seen... Such bonds are the true strength of this army. Without them, we're lost. Others may disagree, but that's one benefit of leadership: I make the final call." — Chrom and Robin (male), Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ "Walhart: First I must know how you defeated me. I have never lacked for strength.
Chrom: No, you're far stronger than me. Even now I think that's true. ...But you stand alone. My own strength is but a fraction of the strength I wield. My allies hone and temper me. They boost my morale and guide my actions." — Walhart and Chrom, Fire Emblem Awakening - ↑ CAPCOM:MHF-G公式メンバーサイト ファイアーエムブレム 覚醒コラボキャンペーン 特設サイト (Japanese)
