Cassandra), is a character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. She is both a teacher at the Officers Academy and a Knight of Seiros.
Biography
Cassandra is one of the scions of House Charon of Faerghus and a previous alumnus of the Officers Academy. In Imperial Year 1176, she turned in her friend Christophe to the Knights of Seiros due to the latter implicating himself in an assassination attempt of the Western Church against Archbishop Rhea, which the Church of Seiros—due to the delicate political climate of the time—covered up and made it seem like Christophe supported the Tragedy of Duscur instead. After her friend's execution, House Charon began receiving constant hostility from Lord Lonato, who had long since suspected his son's implication with the Tragedy of Duscur was false. This led Cassandra to leave House Charon and live as a wanderer and eventually turn to thievery for a time up until she was found by Rhea, who provided her shelter. Afterwards, in gratitude to the Archbishop, Cassandra became a Knight of Seiros under the name of Catherine and gained access to the Hero Relic Thunderbrand, while also befriending Shamir in the process.
Catherine is introduced to Byleth shortly before the mission to subdue Lonato's rebellion against the Church, and accompanies them to Magdred Way and aids them in the battle. After Lonato's defeat, Catherine finds a note on his person detailing a plot to assassinate Rhea, which is carried out in the following month. Catherine shows up later on the Holy Mausoleum after to capture any remaining purpetraitors of the attack on the Mausoleum. When Emperor Edelgard von Hresvelg of the Adrestian Empire declares war on the Church, Catherine fights in the Battle of Garreg Mach on the Church's side, but is defeated.
On all routes other than Crimson Flower, Catherine returns to the monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies Byleth throughout the war with the Empire. On the Crimson Flower route, Catherine can be fought during an optional mission in Brigid, and participates in a counterattack on Garreg Mach Monastery on a separate front to the one Seteth leads, which succeeds in weakening the imperial army, slaying Ladislava and leaving Randolph fatally wounded. Catherine is last seen in Fhirdiad, where she reluctantly sets the city on fire under the orders of Rhea, and proceeds to fight in the ensuing battle against the Black Eagle Strike Force as one of the commanders of the combined Kingdom/Church army; she can be either circumvented or slain at the player's discretion.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Catherine is a unit whose performance and utility can greatly vary depending on when she is recruited and what house you are playing. If you are playing Golden Deer or Blue Lions, Catherine is essentially one of the strongest units in the early game being available to recruit and deploy on the chapter's main map as early as Chapter 5 as a level 9 Swordmaster. Recruiting Catherine this early is fairly simple, consisting of raising Byleth's support with her to C+-rank so she can be recruited by a level 9 Byleth. First, when Catherine first becomes available to speak to in the Garreg Mach Monastery in Chapter 3 share two meals with her that all participants enjoy. Next, give Catherine the Whetstone you obtain in an early game quest. When the C-support becomes available watch it immediately then share two more meals with Catherine that both participants enjoy. If she is still not at the proper rank (check support info in the meal sharing menu to check for a C+ rank) return her lost Badge of Graduation or give her an Owl Feather and she should be ready to recruit and dominate Chapter 5. When she joins, Catherine has the Swordmaster's class bases of 19 strength (effectively 24 with Swordmaster's inherent Swordfaire) and 18 speed, stats likely far better than the students' that enable her to double all early game enemies and not get doubled by even the fastest enemy units on maddening mode. Moreover, due to her personal skill of Fighting Spirit, Catherine gets an effective +5 to her Defense and Resistance, making her decently tanky with an effective 18 defense and 13 resistance as long as she has no battalion equipped. Additionally, due to her A-rank in swords, she already has Axebreaker; combined with her high speed, Catherine can dodge enemy axe-users fairly reliably. All of these factors make Catherine essentially able to solo Chapter 5 even on maddening. Recruiting Catherine this early also nets you the Thunderbrand, a lighter and stronger Brave Sword that you can potentially obtain seven chapters before Brave weapons can be purchased from the marketplace.
On the other hand, If you are playing Black Eagles, Catherine can only be recruited in Chapter 12 and only if you choose to play the Silver Snow route. Despite having received decent stat boosts from auto-leveling, Catherine is less impressive here since your units you have been training from the start and are likely on par with her or better by virtue of having access to class mastery skills, tutoring, and classes with higher movement than the Swordmaster's five. Catherine is by no means a bad unit by this point. She is still very fast and has good Brawling combat arts in Nimble Combo and, later on, Bombard which both hit twice and have good synergy with her Major Crest of Charon which has an overall 91% of raising might by five on at least one of those hits; however, at this point, Catherine cannot easily reclass into anything with better movement and will be hard pressed to obtain any useful mastery skills without resorting to grinding, leaving her underwhelming, especially compared to her performance in Chapter 5 on other routes. Even on Blue Lions/Golden Deer playthroughs, the advantage Catherine gains via early recruitment wears off as your other units become stronger and the enemy units become faster and more difficult to take out in one round. Come part II, Catherine will struggle to double enemies or even resist getting doubled by the fastest enemies. For these situations, Catherine has her Brawling combat arts, but since they cannot be used while Catherine is on a mount, meaning she cannot take advantage of Canto or high movement when using these arts, they are decidedly less ideal than the other guaranteed follow-up combat arts like Swift Strikes and Point-Blank Volley that can be used in cavalry and flying classes. Ultimately, Catherine is an amazing unit for the early game but otherwise is good to decent if recruited late into Part I.
Catherine has a few options for her final class depending on how much investment you want to put in her. First, Catherine can stay as a Swordmaster while you train her riding rank to get Movement +1 so that she has a better movement stat on par with infantry master classes. However, if Catherine's mobility is of greater concern to you, then Assassin is overall better due to having six movement at base and not being slowed by unfavorable terrain like forests at the cost of one strength when compared to the Swordmaster. While Mortal Savant seems like the ideal choice for the final class of sword-focused units, it is in reality a pretty lackluster class having bad class modifiers in speed and strength, being overall weaker and slower than Assassin and Swordmaster, not to mention that Catherine has a weakness in Reason and does not have a good magic growth or spell list to justify making her a Mortal Savant, making obtaining the certification fairly difficult especially if she was recruited late. Both Swordmaster and Assassin are far more ideal for Catherine as they require less investment and allow for her to use Gauntlets and her Brawling combat arts without dismounting while also having good class modifiers. If you are willing to invest more into Catherine, her best class will be Falcon Knight as it allows her to use her speed to dodge tank by granting her easier access to Alert Stance+ and inherent Avoid +10, though depending on when she is recruited getting an A-rank in lances and a B+ in flying can be fairly difficult. Regardless of what promotion path Catherine follows, there are some class mastery skills that will prove useful to get. These skills include the Brigand's Death Blow, the Pegasus Knight's Darting Blow, and the Archer's Hit +20 as they all improve her general combat performance by making her more accurate or stronger.

- Main articles:
Catherine/Supports and Catherine/Supports (Warriors: Three Hopes)
Endings
Catherine, Free Knight (single ending, Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
Catherine left the Knights of Seiros and set out to travel across Fódlan. With Thunderbrand in hand, she wandered the countryside, seeking always to defend the innocent and punish the wicked. Her many years of heroics ensured that she would always be remembered by the people as a beloved folk hero.
Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (single ending, Silver Snow if Byleth has an A or S-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
When Rhea resigned her position of archbishop and left the Church of Seiros, Catherine followed. She devoted herself wholly to Rhea's protection, and the two lived a life of quiet seclusion. Though Thunderbrand remained always by her side, she came to be known by a different name: the Guardian of Zanado.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced his marriage to Catherine shortly after becoming leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. While the king focused on the rebuilding effort, Catherine worked as his bodyguard, and when the situation called for military force, she mobilized the troops and went to battle. Under her watchful eye, Fódlan entered a new era of peace. A common saying among the people was that the king of Fódlan had two weapons: the Sword of the Creator, and his fearsome wife.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Catherine, Free Knight (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced his marriage to Catherine shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. While the archbishop focused on the rebuilding effort, Catherine worked as his bodyguard, and when the situation called for military force, she mobilized the troops and went to battle. Under her watchful eye, Fódlan entered a new era of peace. A common saying among the people was that the archbishop had two weapons: the Sword of the Creator, and his fearsome wife.
Dimitri, Savior King & Catherine, Free Knight
Dimitri assumed the throne of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and spent his life ruling justly over Fódlan. Two years after his coronation, he announced his marriage to Catherine. The people speculated wildly about how this union came to be. Some said that Dimitri spent two full years wooing her, while others suggested that the matter was resolved by a duel. In any case, the couple worked tirelessly to reform the Kingdom, but despite their busy days, it is said that they always found time for sparring, and that the clash of steel could be heard throughout the castle at all hours.
Linhardt, Sleepy Crest Scholar & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A or S-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
When Rhea absconded her post as archbishop, Catherine resigned from the Knights of Seiros and accompanied her to a life of seclusion in the Red Canyon. They were joined by Catherine's new husband, Linhardt, who continued his Crest research at Catherine's behest. Motivated by his wife, and freed from all other distractions, Linhardt made new discoveries at an astonishing rate. The fruits of his research brought about dramatic changes in the world of Crest research, but for the sake of his privacy, Linhardt always published his papers anonymously.
Linhardt, Sleepy Crest Scholar & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
Catherine left the Knights of Seiros and set out to travel across Fódlan. With Thunderbrand in hand, she wandered the countryside, seeking always to defend the innocent and punish the wicked. During these years of heroics, she had an unusual traveling companion in Linhardt, who had renounced his noble title and followed her. During their adventures, Catherine was said to be nearly unstoppable, and Linhardt all but useless—except in moments of great need, when the Crest scholar's wisdom would suddenly carry the day. The pair's adventures lived on as beloved folktales, passed down through the generations. It is unclear whether the two were ever romantically involved.
Caspar, Roaming Instigator & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A or S-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
When Rhea absconded her post as archbishop, Catherine resigned from the Knights of Seiros and followed in order to protect her. They were joined by Catherine's new husband, Caspar, who had the same goal, and together they retired to a life of seclusion in the Red Canyon. Caspar and Catherine spent the bulk of their days farming and hunting, but since neither was content to go a day without wielding a weapon, they sparred routinely. The sound of their swords ringing out, in time with Caspar's heated cries, was heard daily across the valley.
Caspar, Roaming Instigator & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
Catherine resigned from the Knights of Seiros and traveled across Fódlan with Caspar. They dedicated themselves to defending the helpless wherever they went, and in time, the names Thunder Catherine and Inferno Caspar were known to all the world. Legends of their adventures became so popular and well-known that even catchphrases such as "Face the wrath of Thunderbrand!" and "Hey, that's not your sword!" were recounted in the stories that were passed down for generations.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A or S-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
When Rhea resigned her position of archbishop and left the Church of Seiros, Catherine followed, and the pair began a life of seclusion in the Red Canyon. Years later, they began to hear rumors of a wise young man who had been knighted and appointed lord of House Gaspard. Soon they were approached by that lord, Ashe, who came to the Red Canyon to kneel before Catherine and ask her to be his wife. With Rhea's encouragement, Catherine was persuaded to accept. She left the Red Canyon with him, and the two began their journey together.
Ashe, Arrow of Justice & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Ashe was formally knighted and appointed the new head of House Gaspard, which had no successors. He asked Catherine, who had left the Knights of Seiros, to marry him, but she declined, convinced that the people of Gaspard territory would never accept it. Refusing to set his love for Catherine aside, Ashe worked diligently along with the Church of Seiros to expose the full truth of the Western Church's plot. With great persistence, he convinced the people of this truth, and then persuaded Catherine finally to reconsider. The people received her reluctantly at first, but over time, they recognized her virtue and came to accept her.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A or S-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Catherine, the former Knight of Seiros. Catherine had been living a quiet life of seclusion with Rhea in the Red Canyon, and it was the encouragement of the former archbishop that persuaded her to accept Lorenz's ardent marriage proposal. Even after joining House Gloucester, however, it is said that Catherine never lost sight of her lifelong oath to guard and watch over Rhea.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Catherine, the former Knight of Seiros. Catherine had left Garreg Mach behind for a life of freedom, but was eventually persuaded to accept Lorenz's passionate marriage proposal. Even after joining House Gloucester and returning to a life among the nobility, however, it is said that Catherine much preferred relaxing in a tavern to dressing up for court.
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop & Catherine, Guardian of Zanado (Silver Snow if Byleth has an A-support with Rhea, Azure Moon)
After the war, Seteth fully confessed his love to Catherine and asked her to marry him. Intending to accompany Rhea to a life of seclusion, however, Catherine declined. Over the years, as Seteth worked to rebuild the church from the monastery, he continued to write love letters to Catherine. When the rebuilding effort was complete, he journeyed to the Red Canyon, where she and Rhea had been living, and delivered all of his letters by hand. Catherine was deeply moved, and with Rhea's blessing and no more reason to refuse him, she accepted his proposal. The two were wed and lived out their lives happily alongside Rhea.
Seteth, Heir of Purpose & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth does not have A or S-support with Rhea, Verdant Wind)
After the war, Seteth fully confessed his love to Catherine and asked her to marry him. Refusing to remain at the monastery, however, Catherine declined. Over the years, as Seteth worked to rebuild the church, he continued to write love letters to Catherine. Her answer was always the same. Finally, when the rebuilding effort was complete, Seteth left the church and went to see her, declaring his love anew. With no more reason to refuse him, she at last accepted his proposal. The two were wed, and swore to walk side by side together through the new age.
Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop & Catherine, Free Knight (Silver Snow if Byleth has an S-support with Rhea)
After the war, Rhea resumed her duties as the archbishop, and Seteth and Catherine joined her in rebuilding the Knights of Seiros. As ever, Seteth served as her second in command and Catherine remained one of her most trusted protectors. When the hard work was over and all had been restored, Seteth confessed his love to Catherine and asked her to marry him. Though initially reluctant, Catherine is said to have been persuaded to accept by a nudge from Rhea herself. The two were wed in a packed and lively ceremony, and afterward they lived out their lives happily as husband and wife.
Alois, Sun of the Knights & Catherine, Free Knight
Alois officially took up the title of captain of the Knights of Seiros. In this new role, he led the knights to many victories, and was much beloved. At the same time, he developed a reputation for gullibility, and his subordinates began to play tricks on him regularly. To help him deal with this, Catherine volunteered her services as an adviser. She kept a lookout for him, and put a stop to these antics before they began. The combination of the kindly captain and the intimidating wielder of Thunderbrand proved strong, and the Knights of Seiros prospered.
Catherine, Free Knight & Shamir, Distant Archer
After quitting the Knights of Seiros, Catherine and Shamir set out on a lifelong journey together. The pair were inseparable as they traveled across Fódlan, and eventually wound up in Shamir's homeland of Dagda. They faced many hardships on their adventures, some of which were self-inflicted, as the duo had a way of sticking their noses into others' business in their efforts to right wrongs. It is said, however, that no foe they encountered ever proved a match for the combined might of Shamir's marksmanship and Catherine's Thunderbrand.

Trivia
- In the game's data, there is an unused variation of Catherine's S support illustration which depicts Byleth with blue hair; this is only possible in the Crimson Flower route, where Catherine cannot be recruited.
- Disregarding enemy-only abilities, as an enemy on the Crimson Flower route, Catherine has access to the Avoid +10 and Sword Avoid +20 abilities, which she cannot learn as a playable unit; the former is only available as an innate ability for the Pegasus Knight, Falcon Knight and Wyvern Lord classes, while the latter can only be learnt by the student who gains access to the Dancer class.
