“ | I just don't get it. This is our country... Why do we have to live in hiding, like prisoners in our own land? | ” | — Edward, to Micaiah and Leonardo. |
---|
Edward (Japanese: エディ Eddie) is a member of the Dawn Brigade and is best friends with Leonardo. He first appears in the prologue of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn with Micaiah while waiting for Leonardo.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Role
Edward joins alongside Micaiah in the prologue of Part 1. He is playable for the rest of Part 1 excluding Chapter 9. Like most other Dawn Brigade units, he is playable in Part III, Chapters 6, 12, and 13, and he appears as a boss in Chapter 7 and the Endgame. From the prologue of Part 1 until Chapter 3, Edward is force-deployed due to a lack of battle preparations and the death of any player unit, including Edward, causing a Game Over.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Edward is the first swordsman in the Dawn Brigade. He has decent base skill and speed but average base strength and somewhat low durability. Edward has good growths all around, especially excellent offensive growths that including an impressive strength growth of 60%, which is the second highest strength growth for sword users behind Elincia, but if he's not trained, he will often be outclassed by Zihark, a promoted unit who joins six chapters later with base stats on par with a freshly promoted Edward, as well as more movement because of the promotion, a safer and more versatile skill in Adept, and an earth affinity. Edward does have superior stat progression in HP, strength, luck, and (eventually) defense compared to him, but less resistance, and the Swordmaster has low caps in Strength and especially HP until his second promotion, limitating his growths in them. Edward's performance is drastically affected by the difficulty mode, more so than possibly any other unit in the game. He is a strong unit on Easy Mode, a passable, if outcompeted unit on Normal Mode, and generally poor on Hard Mode.
On Easy Mode, there is little competition for experience, and Edward is likely to remain above the doubling threshold against enemies consistently. The Dawn Brigade's Part 3 chapters are very enemy-phase focused, which can cause Edward issues. His Part 3 personal weapon, Caladbolg is accurate and very powerful, with higher might than a Steel Blade, similiarly to its equivalents, but it has a weaker first impression compared to its equivalents, the Brave Sword or the Killing Edge, only increasing luck by 8 instead of giving +5 speed like Leonardo's Lughnasadh or +4 defense like Nolan's Tarvos. His Part 4 durability and avoid is sufficient to reliably handle enemy phases, however. While he is not perfect, the player can use other units to cover for his faults, allowing him to shine where he does.
On Normal Mode, Edward will fall outside of the doubling threshold after the first few maps without investment, and while he will still be quite effective and will double reliably when trained, Zihark can effectively replace his role later in the game with far less investment. If his early levels are good, he may be worth considering, but he is generally outcompeted for investment by Jill and Nolan.
Edward struggles to pull his weight on Hard Mode. He will have difficulty in doubling enemies in Part 1, and between the loss of the weapon triangle, high enemy stats, and accurate weapons, his dodging prospects are near non-existent. The severe drought of experience and BEXP means that training him deprives other units of badly needed experience. The result of training him is an effective sidegrade to Zihark during an enemy phase-centric midgame, where reliably dodging laguz without an Earth-Earth support is virtually impossible. Using Zihark allows the player to invest the experience that would have been needed to make Edward strong into more useful units such as Jill. In Hard Mode, Edward is best used as a free deployment chip unit for Part 1, possibly early-promoted with a Master Seal in Part 3, and ignored through part 4.
If used in Part 4, Edward is likely to have become a Trueblade. Regardless of difficulty, Edward will be one of your most effective combat units by this point, and will further improve as his Trueblade caps allow him to put his HP and Strength growths to meaningful use. Edward is best suited to Elincia's army, as it features the least Sages who can exploit his poor resistance, and his high crit rate is one of the more reliable ways to defeat the highly durable laguz in 4-5. His endgame is overall stellar, and although he may face some competition from Mia, another Trueblade with Vantage who may have a level advantage on Edward, the two SS Rank Swords mean bringing both is a viable option. On average, Edward caps HP, skill and speed before his promotion to Swordmaster, although he can cap strength if it grows very well, capping it not long after the promotion, and as a Trueblade, he will on average cap defense too.
Wrath is Edward's innate skill, so if the player chooses to train Edward, it should always be kept on him; otherwise it should be removed soon so other units can take advantage of Wrath. Resolve and Vantage are other skills available through Part 1 that complement Wrath. With Resolve, Edward's avoid and crit rate both increase, greatly improving the reliability of Wrath. With Vantage, Edward can potentially Wrath-crit enemies before they actually attack. Neither are foolproof tactics, however. Additionally, on Normal or Hard Mode, Edward typically suffers from an unfortunate issue during much of early Part 1 where many enemies hit him for over half of his health, but not the seventy percent required to activate Wrath, greatly limiting his ability to make use of it. Seraph Robes do little to resolve this due to Edward's low HP caps.
Edward has the Light affinity, which boosts defense and hit. The defense boost is nice, and while accuracy may seem unimportant, the very low accuracy of ranged swords is slightly helped by it. Nolan and Zihark are both infantry units in the Dawn Brigade that have earth affinities, giving both partners a large avoid boost while benefiting from the extra defense (Nolan also appreciates the slight accuracy boost thanks to axes). Volug and Fiona also have earth affinities, but Volug has a much higher movement than Edward, and Fiona has very poor performance and movement through all of her available chapters. Aran is another physical infantry unit with a thunder affinity which also gives extra defense and avoid.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Edward is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Radiant Dawn character set. Edward is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Smash Brethren DLC series.

Personality and character
Edward is an energetic, although somewhat reckless, swordsman who is easily excitable. He is a very simple person and believes in Micaiah's oracles without question. He thinks very highly of himself and has a very cheery disposition, but he is very naive, as shown by his belief that if someone says to do something, then it is the right thing to do. His best friend, Leonardo, tries to teach him a sense of responsibility, but often to no avail.
