...I cannot undo what is done. My father's blood will always be on my hands, just as Minerva's betrayal of her brother and country will be on hers.
— Michalis, to Gotoh

Michalis (pronounced /mɪˈkeɪlɪs/[key][1]; Japanese: ミシェイル Misheil) is the king of Macedon, and the elder brother of Minerva and Maria. He appears as a boss in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Book 1 of Mystery of the Emblem, and Shadow Dragon, as an NPC in Mystery of the Emblem Book 2, and as a playable character in New Mystery of the Emblem.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light

Role

Prior to the events of the War of Shadows, Michalis assassinated his father, Osmond, and led Macedon into an alliance with the Dolhr Empire. Knowing that his sister Minerva would refuse to accept such an alliance, he had Dolhr take Maria as a hostage to ensure Minerva's subordination. Despite several warnings from Gotoh that he risked destroying both Macedon and his family, he refused to back down, and led his army of dracoknights into battle against the Archanean League, where he was defeated.

Role

Maria praying for Michalis.

Maria rescued her elder brother following his defeat in the War of Shadows, and restored him to full health. Michalis first appears in-game in Chapter 3, where he rescues a gravely wounded Minerva from Macedon Castle, where Lykke has overthrown her in a coup d'état. He brings Minerva to Khadein to recover and join up with Marth's army, before leaving to search for his missing sister Maria. While searching for Maria, he discovered that Gharnef had taken possession of the Starlight tome, and managed to steal it from him, but was mortally injured in the process. He survived long enough to reach a village in the Wyvern's Dale, on the border of Macedon and Dolhr, and passed the tome on to Marth, before succumbing to his wounds.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Role

As in Mystery of the Emblem Book 2, Maria rescued her elder brother following his defeat in the War of Shadows, and restored him to full health. While searching for Maria, he discovered that Gharnef had taken possession of the Starlight tome, and managed to steal it from him, but was heavily injured in the process. He survived long enough to reach a village in the Wyvern's Dale, on the border of Macedon and Dolhr, and passed the tome on to Marth, before succumbing to his wounds.

However, if Minerva reaches the village quickly enough, she will be able to treat his wounds, and scolds her brother for giving up, convincing him to continue living. After Marth's army fights its way through the Wyvern's Dale, Michalis has recovered enough strength to join the battle to defeat Medeus once and for all.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Michalis joins very late, but has the highest base stats among all recruitable units. He also has a B-rank in lances and axes, letting him use most lances and axes without investment. His growth rates are quite good, letting him cap several stats if he gains a few levels. However, most units in New Mystery of the Emblem have high growth rates. For that reason, when Michalis joins, he will not outshine the player's main combat units.

Michalis's greatest flaw is his tiny base luck, making him face crit chances from enemies. When he joins, most enemies will be able to kill him with a crit, especially magic users. In lower difficulties, Michalis can use brave weapons to avoid crits on player phase. In Lunatic Reverse, though, that method does not work – and the method only works on player phase to begin with. For that reason, Michalis will often get crit and die, limiting his combat potential. He can reclass to a 2-range class like Sniper, but that makes him unable to use his good weapon ranks in lances and axes.

Michalis's luck does not make him unusable, though. The player can exploit it to manipulate enemy AI; the AI often targets player units with low luck. The AI often considers crit damage, and since Michalis has low luck, they will target him. Besides, his combat stats are serviceable for the time he joins and he requires no investment. He will not take care of the lategame maps on his own, but he is a decent filler combat unit.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

There are two variations of Michalis available in Heroes. The first variation of Michalis is one of the characters who first appeared as an NPC at launch, and was made available to players in the fourth Grand Hero Battle, which initially ran on March 20, 2017 before making its proper debut run from March 24, 2017 through March 28, 2017. A spring-themed variation of Michalis was added in the Spring Eternal update, and was available through the True Luxury? Tempest Trial+.

Once the prince of Macedon, Michalis is a mighty warrior who some saw as the second coming of Iote, Macedon's first king. But to his sisters, Minerva and Maria, he was their beloved older brother. And yet, Michalis threw his lot in with the Dolhr Empire to invade the Holy Kingdom of Archanea, a land he'd always resented for its imperious attitude toward Macedon. As part of the plot, he assassinated his own father, King Osmond, and seized the throne. Hoping to put an end to their brother's ambitions, Minerva and Maria joined the Altean army led by Marth. Finally, at the end of a struggle that tore the siblings apart, Michalis was defeated. Though he survived the battle, Michalis kept a low profile from then on. In the years that followed, he gave his all to help Minerva and Maria, and worked to support Macedon from the shadows.
