Veronica (Japanese: ヴェロニカ Veronica) is a major character in Fire Emblem Heroes, serving as the main antagonist of Book I, the secondary antagonist of Book II, and a major supporting character from then on. Veronica and her Emblian Empire seek to conquer Askr and the Outrealms.
Biography
Veronica was born as the crown princess of Embla, and had an older brother named Bruno. As a direct descendant of the goddess Embla, she suffered a blood curse that compelled her towards violence against Askr. In her childhood, she befriended a branch member of the royal family, Letizia, and came to see her as an older sister figure. Veronica's father, the previous Emperor of Embla, initiated a war of conquest against Askr and the Outrealms that made him deeply popular among the Emblian people. When he died, Veronica's stepmother took the throne and brought an end to the war. However, Veronica sought to follow in her father's footsteps and began a renewed campaign of conquest.
Veronica leads the Emblian Empire against Askr, using contracts to force otherworldy Heroes into her service. The Order of Heroes manages to free these captive heroes, although Prince Xander of Nohr voluntarily remains by her side. Veronica personally leads an attack on Askr's summoning gate to cut off their own use of Heroes, but the Order is forewarned by Bruno, who seeks to defuse the conflict and escape his curse, and manages to defeat her. Later, during a routine engagement in Magvel, Sir Seth of Renais lectures her on how she has ignored the well-being of her citizens in waging her war, leading her to start questioning her own actions.
Veronica enters a military alliance with the kingdom of Múspell and its tyrannical king Surtr in order to defeat Askr once and for all. However, Surtr plots to double-cross her, conquer Embla after Askr falls, and personally murder her. Their alliance begins to fracture when Surtr decides to start slaughtering Askran civilians for his own sadistic pleasure, as Veronica wants to claim Askr's resources for her own. Surtr betrays Veronica, abducts her, and takes her back to Múspell to be used as a human sacrifice in the Rite of Flames to fuel his immortality alongside Princess Ylgr of Nifl. However, the two are saved by Helbindi, a Múspell general whose village was annihilated by Surtr as punishment for his failures against Askr. They are able to escape with the aid of Bruno and the Order. These events bring an end to open hostilities between Embla and Askr.
Veronica soon finds herself allying with Askr against several mutual threats. Loki convinces her to intervene on behalf of Askr when they are invaded by Hel, ruler of the underworld. Veronica guides the Askrans through an alternate Embla and finds information on the Heart's Rite, a ritual that can kill Hel. After obtaining the Dire Breidablik, a weapon created by the Heart's Rite, Veronica accompanies the Order through their final battle with Hel. Their next foe is Dökkálfheimr, land of nightmares. When Dökkálfheimr invades the waking world, Veronica reunites with the Order and accompanies them on their quest to defeat its queen Freyja and find Bruno, who has left on a journey with Xander. She is eventually forced to remain behind to hold off enemy forces as the Order infiltrates Dökkálfheimr. The Order seemingly defeats Freyja and returns to the waking world to reunite with Veronica, but it soon transpires that they have been in the dream world the entire time. The Order faces Frejya and slays her in a final battle. Their final mutual foe is Niðavellir, the land of dvergar. After King Fáfnir's efforts to conquer Askr are beaten back, he turns his eye towards Embla in order to retrieve a copy of Breidablik created by Eitri. The Order rides to their aid and rescues Veronica.
Eventually, the goddess Embla decides to renew her efforts to destroy Askr. Embla begins to inflict supernatural closures on both Askr and her namesake country, leading Veronica to again ally with the Order of Heroes to investigate. During her investigation, Veronica reunites with Letizia, now leader of the empire's Curse Directive. Embla uses her influence to force Veronica to attack the Order; after being driven off, she is attacked by Letizia, who reveals she has framed her for treason in order to claim the throne for herself. The Order rescues her, but she surrenders in order to spare Askr further bloodshed. Letizia schedules Veronica's execution, but she and Bruno are able to convince the imperial soldiers that Letizia is lying and to free her. With the aid of the Order, Veronica and Bruno defeat and arrest Letizia. However, Embla personally intervenes and possesses Letizia. When the Order kills Letizia, Embla captures Veronica and empowers her so she can serve as a new vessel. The god Askr sacrifices himself to give the Order the World-Key of Yggdrasill, a fruit that expels Embla from the body when consumed and can kill her. Bruno allows Embla to possess him and the Order to kill him so that Veronica can use the Key to gain immunity to Embla's control, leaving Embla with no suitable vessels. The Order is finally able to kill Embla, and Veronica accepts the friendship of Alfonse and Sharena.
Some time later, Embla is attacked by the forces of Gullveig, the Golden Seer. Gullveig personally confronts Veronica and defeats her, but spares her life on the grounds that it is not her fate to die until Embla lies in ruins.
Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are nine different variations of Veronica appearing Heroes - five playable and four non-playable.
The normal variation of Veronica is a non-playable character that serves as one of the game's major antagonists, and still has not been made playable to date. Book VI introduces three possessed variants of Veronica: two green tome infantry variants based off of her normal variation and differing only in help text and minor artwork shading, and a red tome cavalier variant.
Among the playable variations, a brave variation of Veronica, based on her dressed like her brother Bruno, was made available on August 21, 2018 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Arrival of the Brave update. A spring variation of Veronica was made available between the period of March 19, 2019 through April 19, 2019 as part of the summoning event surrounding the Regal Rabbits update. A pirate-themed variation of Veronica was made available between the period of August 7, 2020 through September 7, 2020 as part of the summoning event surrounding the Pirate's Pride update; this variation is a Harmonized Hero, carrying a dual-credit with Fates as a result of being paired up with that game's Xander. A Valentine's-themed variation of Veronica was added to the game as part of the Love of a King update, and was made available to players in the thirty-eighth edition of the Tempest Trials+, "Lost to Love", which initially ran from February 5, 2021 through February 16, 2021. A version of Veronica's later Book VI appearance would be made available to players as a Legendary Hero on November 30, 2022, as the game's fortieth Legendary Hero. These variations have made Veronica the first character in Heroes to have multiple special variants made playable without her normal variation becoming playable.

Personality and character
Veronica was born to the Emblian Emperor's first wife, and follows in her father's footsteps as one who craves conquest.[3] The death of the previous emperor put Zenith into a short period of peace that was quickly shattered after Veronica's rise to power. Veronica and her father's actions, warfare for the good of Embla, are popular polices among the people of Embla.[4]
Otherwise, Veronica seems to be quite lonesome despite her popularity.
