Gordin (Japanese: ゴードン Gohdon) is a character of the Archanea games. He is a novice archer from Altea, and part of Marth's starting army. He later becomes a pupil of Jeorge, a Sniper from Archanea, and a mentor to his younger brother Ryan.
Gordin appears in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, both books of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Gordin is one of the Altean soldiers who fled to Talys alongside Prince Marth after their country was defeated by Dolhr and Gra. Some years later, Talys is attacked and its princess Caeda goes to Marth for help; Gordin, following his lord's orders, enters the battlefield with his fellow soldiers. Once they have rescued the king of Talys and Marth starts his campaign against Dolhr, Gordin follows Marth for the rest of the war.
After Medeus is defeated, he dedicates himself to help those in need, building a orphanage.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gordin is one of the first units you recruit in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, and as such his greatest strength is his availability. He comes early enough to be able to contribute in the early game by doing chip damage and setting up kills for other units. Unfortunately, in the long run, Gordin gets outclassed very fast. Gordin has very mediocre bases, and although his growths aren't terrible, they aren't good enough to justify training him up; additionally, he has an abysmal movement of 5. Gordin can promote to Sniper, giving him a bonus to his stats—notably his speed and movement. Promoting requires reaching level 10, however, which may be difficult when using him for chip damage; the earliest Orion's Bolts come in Chapter 12, long after several units have outclassed Gordin; and even after promotion, his stats still leave something to be desired. Ultimately, he has some level of utility in the early game but if you want to use an archer you should wait for Castor; the Horsemen Sedgar or Wolf; or the Sniper Jeorge.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
Book 1
Role
As Book 1 is a remake of the first game, Gordin repeats his role from Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. His ending was retconned, though; instead of working for the war victims, he goes to Archanea and becomes Jeorge's pupil. He later returns to Altea's army, alongside Ryan.

Book 2
Role
Some years after the War of Shadows, Gordin has become known as the best archer in Altea. When Marth is ordered by Emperor Hardin to quell a rebellion in Grust, Gordin is one of the few veteran soldiers to go with him. Once the rebellion has been dealt with, he stays in the army for the rest of the story.
After visiting the Fane of Raman, Marth's troops—who have already been branded as traitors—are surrounded by Hardin's army in Chiasmir. Among the Archanean forces is Jeorge, Gordin's former master. When he sees him, Gordin goes to the sniper and begs him to join them. Jeorge decides to rebel and trusts Gordin to tell so to Marth.
Once the war is over, Gordin leaves the Altean army and becomes a member of the Archanean Free Knights.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
Gordin first appears in the fourth Prologue chapter of Shadow Dragon, where he is being held hostage by the enemy. A ruffian binds and gags him and leaves him in a fort, hoping that Marth will think Gordin is an enemy. Though Gordin is dressed in a uniform from Gra, Marth recognizes Gordin as an Altean soldier, and frees him from his bonds. Gordin then volunteers to assist Marth, provided that there is a bow he can use. If Marth chooses to kill Gordin instead of recruiting him, the enemy opens the door and the decoy plotline is dropped.
As a member of the party at that point in the game, Gordin is one of the possible decoys that Marth can send to help them evade Gra's army. If he is chosen, Gordin willingly sacrifices himself and consequently is not seen for the remainder of the game.
Alternatively, if Marth sends one of the other party members as the decoy, Gordin accompanies Marth first to Talys, then on his journey through the rest of the game, much like in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light and Book 1 of Mystery of the Emblem.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gordin is a level 1 Archer. The peak of his usefulness is in Chapter 1, where he is the most reliable source of chip damage. Having chip damage in early chapters is very useful in high difficulties. The enemies there are mighty and the player's units need to gang up on individual foes. Gordin can attack them without taking a counterattack, and has good accuracy. The only other 2-range the player has back then is a Javelin, and these are less accurate against axe users.
Gordin's usefulness falls off the cliff as soon as the early game ends, though. Even in Chapter 2, he becomes outclassed by Castor. Castor is a Hunter, a better class than Archer by a mile thanks to higher speed and movement. None of Gordin's base stats are good, his growths are subpar, and he cannot reclass to Hunter to improve his stats. In higher difficulties, enemies one-round him as early as Chapter 2. None of Gordin's reclassing options are very good, because he loses his D-rank in bows. With all this considered, Gordin has little potential. The player can still train and promote him, but doing so is a challenge because of how weak he is. And even once trained, he will not outshine powerful growth units.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Role
During the prologue of New Mystery of the Emblem, Jeorge visited Altea to teach Gordin more about archery, though he could potentially become an instructor for the seventh platoon depending on circumstances. If he did become a temporary instructor, he would be subsequently defeated by them and particularly impressed by Kris's aptitude. Being an archer-captain of Archanea, he was unable to offer them his personal assistance and instead asked Gordin to aid them on his behalf, to which Gordin complied. Gordin assisted the seventh platoon up until they were were given recognition as fully-fledged knights, and then forced to fight their former ally Katarina, who was revealed to be an assassin sent to kill Marth under the guise of being a trainee tactician.
Later on, Marth was ordered by Hardin, who had become the emperor of Archanea when he married Princess Nyna, to send the Altean army to Grust and quell an uprising rebellion. Gordin was one of the knights Marth brought with him on the expedition, along with the rest of the Seventh Platoon. Subsequently, Gordin fought alongside Marth in the future battles against their new enemies, the kingdoms of Archanea, Aurelis, Khadein, and Gra. In Chapter 8, when the Altean army was escaping from the pursuing Archanean forces en route to Khadein for temporary refuge, Gordin could potentially encounter his former mentor again as an enemy on the battlefield, where he was guarding a fortress north of the Chiasmir bridge. Not wanting to fight nor kill his teacher in a duel, Gordin pleaded for the Archanean sniper to join their side instead. After mulling it over, Jeorge agreed and decided to lend his power to fight against his country, which he felt had grown corrupt, in order to restore it to its prior glory. Gordin continued to aid Marth in the expedition against Archanea, and later, the Shadow Dragon Medeus who was being revived by Gharnef. When the era of darkness was finally brought to an end with both Medeus and Gharnef slain, Gordin left Altea for some reason and went to Pales, the capital of Archanea. He later joined the Archanean free knights, perhaps because he wanted to help Jeorge, who had formed the group to defend civilians from bandits and thieves.
As with a number of other characters in New Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique weapon named for Gordin available through Everyone's Conditions: Gordin's Bow.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Gordin is an archer that can either join in Prologue 5 or Chapter 1 of New Mystery of the Emblem. While most players prefer playing through Athena's paralogue as her combat is much better than Gordin's, he can still contribute well due to having better bases than his brother Ryan. Gordin will be the only unit besides Ryan, Arran and an archer avatar that will be able to use steel bows at base. This is important as with a +4 might forged steel bow Gordin will be able to one shot every wyvern rider besides the boss in Chapter 2, while also doing solid chip damage to bulky enemies. This is extremely important as very few units can reliably deal with the aforementioned wyverns and Gordin can deal with them on player phase without facing a counterattack. Another advantage Gordin holds is that other earlygame D rank bow users such as Warren and Ryan cannot do the same at base and need to rely on strength level ups. Upon promotion Gordin also benefits from the horseman and general class which lower his bow rank slightly, but give him other advantages, and of course he makes a decent sniper as well. Unfortunately, because of the reclassing feature any character can reclass into a sniper upon promotion with C rank in bows. While Gordin might seem to hold the advantage thank to his higher bow rank the only relevant B rank bow, besides the silver bow, is the brave bow which is attained very late. Another flaw is that due to his mediocre bases and growths Gordin won't be able to keep up with other units such as Sirius or Catria and both will likely be better options for snipers. Another problem is that Jeorge joins in Chapter 8 with likely similar stat to Gordin at that point in the game, but with an A rank in bows and access to the Parthia with which he will be able to one shot every enemy flyer through the entire game on average. This is not to say that Gordin is a bad unit, as he is one of the best combat units in the brutal earlygame of New Mystery of the Emblem on lunatic and lunatic reverse, but he will likely fall off in favor of other units.

Personality and character
In the earlier games, Gordin's personality was left vague due to his limited lines and minimal role in the storyline. Nonetheless, it can be inferred he is a patriotic character, loyal to both his country and prince as he dutifully fought alongside Marth for the duration of the two wars. He seems to be characterized by a determined attitude as well, which is evident when he followed Jeorge to Archanea after the first war in order to become more skilled in archery. In New Mystery of the Emblem, Gordin's characterization was fleshed out in his support conversations with Kris, his brother, and Jeorge. In these conversations, Gordin is shown to be a humble, slightly timid, and gentle young man who has little self confidence.
Particularly, during his conversations with Kris, he expresses a longing to carry a dignified and authoritative presence like Jagen, although his attempts to enliven his personality end badly. Gordin explains his desire to change his personality came about because he felt his face seemed too childish, and so others didn't see him as a senior knight of Altea and in fact, assumed he was younger than them. Eventually, he learns to accept himself as who he is, which Kris encourages him to continue to be.
