Jaffar (Japanese: ジャファル Jaffar) is a character in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. He first appears in Chapter 18 in Eliwood's tale and Chapter 19 in Hector's tale.
Known as the Angel of Death, Jaffar is an emotionless assassin hired by Nergal for the Black Fang, until he began to care for Nino, whose kindness greatly changed him.
Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
Role
Jaffar was hired by Nergal as an assassin when he was just an infant and an orphan, and he was found sleeping on top of a pile of corpses. Impressed by his deadly skill with the blade, Nergal took him in as the Angel of Death.[3] Over the years, his skill and Nergal's training soon enough had him nominated as one of the Black Fang's legendary Four Fangs, replacing Jerme, the Death Kite, as the organization's most powerful assailant. This put him on par with the other three of the Four Fangs, Lloyd the White Wolf, Linus the Mad Dog, and Ursula the Blue Crow.
He is first seen in the game when Ephidel, one of Nergal's morphs, discovers Leila, who has been disguising herself as a member of the Black Fang, as a spy in employment of Ostia, and has Jaffar kill her on the spot. Jaffar is then ordered to take Leila's corpse to the forest near the shore of Dread Isle as a warning to Eliwood, Hector, Lyn, and the others. This event sparks Hector's and Matthew's hatred towards him, since he has murdered Hector's spy and Matthew's lover.
Later on, after the three lords defeat Darin, the power-hungry marquess of Laus, they arrive at the Dragon's Gate to stop Nergal and Ephidel from releasing one of the dragons from the portal through Ninian. However, before they could do anything, Jaffar intervenes, and distracts the group while Nergal continues his ritual, and afterwards, Ephidel dismisses him and allows him to move onto his next mission.
Jaffar's days of assassinating targets by the order of Sonia, Nergal, and the Black Fang continue until on one of his missions, he apparently miscalculates, and he suffers a grave wound. He goes to a house where Nino is, who is there waiting for him to renew his assassination contract. However, upon entry, Jaffar's wound continued to bleed badly, and he passes out on the floor. He later reawakens, soon discovering that Nino treated his wounds. Jaffar questions Nino's motives, as according to Black Fang law, she should have killed him and ran off. When she responds by saying that she could never let her comrade die, Jaffar scolds her, before passing out again from his injuries. This is the moment where Jaffar has feelings for the first time.
After a while, Sonia sends Jaffar with Nino to kill Prince Zephiel, although Jaffar, along with Brendan, the founder of the Black Fang and Nino's step-father, dislikes this order at first, believing that it would be too much for her. Jaffar's reluctance boils over even more when Sonia orders him to kill Nino after Zephiel is successfully murdered. This causes him to be very anxious for Nino's well being, since he started developing feelings for her since she saved his life.[4]
When he and Nino arrive at the prince's headquarters, they overhear Zephiel praying in his room. After he is finished praying, Jaffar immediately infiltrates the room and knocks the prince out right there. He then steps aside to let Nino finish him off, but it turns out that Nino cannot bring herself to do so. This shocks Jaffar, but nonetheless, Nino tells him, knowing about the Black Fang's punishment for failure, that she is ready to die, and that he may kill her. Instead, Jaffar decides to spare the prince, under her request, and Nino, and he signals her to follow him to leave the castle. However, they are stopped by one of the Four Fangs Ursula, who was sent to kill him, Nino, and the prince. He leaves Nino somewhere towards the gate of the castle, telling her that she deserves to live more than he does, and he runs back into the halls to fight off the Black Fang members. That is when the three lords arrive, and they assist them both in defeating Ursula and her group. If Nino is recruited by either of the three lords, and she talks to Jaffar, who is a green unit, she will try to persuade him to come with her. In response, Jaffar claims that he is nothing but a corpse, and that he was dead as soon as he was born. Nevertheless, Nino still insists that he comes with her and the three lords, saying that she will not leave to safety if he doesn't (This will not immediately recruit him. He will still remain a green unit for the rest of the level, but he becomes playable in the next one).
After Ursula is defeated and the prince of Bern's safety is assured, Jaffar asks the three lords why they decided to not kill him, even after facing off against him at the Dragon's Gate and killing Leila. Lyn states that they did not kill him because he did not kill Zephiel, so they spared his life. Both her and Eliwood are fine with recruiting Jaffar into their group, but Hector, knowing that he was the one who murdered Leila, continues to hold a deep-seated grudge against him for the remainder of the journey.[5]
Soon afterwards, Jaffar catches Nino sneaking out of a village, where the group was staying for the night, in order to find out about the truth about Sonia, and whether she did order for Nino's death to be carried out or not. Jaffar decides to go with her to ensure her safety. When they arrive there, Sonia appears before them, and she scornfully tells the truth about Nino and her real family. Afterwards, Jaffar stands before Nino, saying that he will protect her. Before a battle could ensue, the Eliwood, Lyn, and Hector arrive to help them confront the villain. After defeating Sonia, Jaffar and Nino continue to travel with the group for the rest of their journey to vanquish Nergal.
After the war comes to a close, if Jaffar is not paired up with Nino (That is, having a full A support with her), he will disappear as soon as the last battle with the dragons at the Dragon's Gate concludes, and that he is currently hiding from the bounty hunters out to capture him for a reward. However, if he has a full A support with Nino, they will both become the parents of twins Lugh and Raigh, and they move to Pherae to live a happy life there. Their time together was joyous until the bounty hunters come to take Jaffar. He disappears to protect his family, and Nino vanishes looking for him as well. As a result, it is possible that he is killed under the pursuit of these bounty hunters, but there is also still a good chance that he and Nino would be alive, and that they are currently hiding from the hunters during the events of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Jaffar is a pre-promoted assassin that is recruited at the end of Chapter 26E/28H. Due to the chaotic and somewhat random nature of the chapter, Jaffar can sometimes die before the player is able to get to him, however, usually he and Nino will be able to survive the chapter. Even for coming this late into the game, Jaffar's bases stand out for being incredibly high in almost every area, with the exception of his somewhat lower luck. Jaffar does have poor growths to offset his high bases, though his bases are good enough for him to be a strong combat unit for the rest of the game. Due to his aforementioned high stats and his A rank in swords, Jaffar makes for an excellent boss killer, especially if he is given a boost from Filla's Might. This is quite useful against the multiple bulky bosses The Blazing Blade throws at you in the last few chapters of the game. Along with that, Jaffar will typically be able to one round most generic enemies on player phase and also has unique utility being able to use lockpicks, without having weaker combat, unlike Matthew and Legault. However, Jaffar's greatest weakness is his class, Assassin: it is locked to both infantry movement and swords. This is a problem for Jaffar as The Blazing Blade features a large amount of enemies using 1-2 range weapons, against which Jaffar cannot properly retaliate. Along with this, The Blazing Blade is heavily dominated by strong mounted units like Marcus or Heath, who are able to achieve similar combat to Jaffar, while also having canto, higher movement and access to 1-2 range. Jaffar being locked to swords also weakens his strong combat as dangerous enemies, such as Valkyries in Chapter 27E/29H, as other playable units are able to kill them on player phase through the use of brave weapon without being helpless on enemy phase. Along with that, there are many more ways of dealing with bosses, as the game feature comparatively strong pre-promotes such as Harken or Hawkeye, or through the use of spells, such as Luna.
Overall, Jaffar is a strong player phase combat unit that comes for no investment and is able to kill most bosses easily, however he will likely be left behind by more experienced players due to being locked to swords and his lack of a mount.

Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are two different variations of Jaffar available to Heroes, both of which are tied to his storyline appearance in The Blazing Blade. The normal variation of Jaffar is one of the characters added to the game in the Blazing Shadows update, and became available for summoning by players on March 14, 2017. A winter variation of Jaffar was added to the game as part of the Glorious Gifts update, and was made available to players in the twenty-second edition of the Tempest Trials+, "For a Smile", which initially ran from December 17, 2019 through December 27, 2019; this variation is notably the first character or variation to wield a weapon type not part of the game at its initial launch (in this case, a green dagger) distributed via a Tempest Trials, and also the first such non-beast unit distributed by means other than normal summoning.

Personality and character
As a result of his upbringing by Nergal, Jaffar is initially emotionless, ruthless, and willing to kill in cold blood. He begins to change when he is discovered near death by Nino. She defies the code of the Black Fang and saves Jaffar's life. He begins to care about Nino, and when Sonia orders him to betray and kill Nino after they assassinate Prince Zephiel, Jaffar defies her and orders Nino to flee while he makes a last stand to save her. He can also fall in love with Nino if they build up enough support. He is also very difficult to scare, and only Sophia is able to startle him.
