Appearance(s)

I'd lived in that tiny village my whole life, so to me, Captain Jeralt was nothing short of a legend. So I went right up to him, and I told him I was going to be his apprentice. He didn't stick around long after that, but he did teach me a lot while he was with us.
— Leonie

Leonie Pinelli (pronounced /li'oʊni pɪ'nɛli/[key]; Japanese: レオニー=ピネッリ Leonie Pinelli) is a character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. She is a student at the Officers Academy and a member of the Golden Deer.

Biography

Leonie is a hunter's daughter from the village of Sauin within the Leicester Alliance. When she was a child, her village hired mercenaries to defend themselves. This was Jeralt's mercenary group. Leonie saw Jeralt as someone that defended those who couldn't defend themselves, and asked him to be his apprentice. He taught her a few things before leaving the village, with the promise that they would reunite. To become a mercenary and be like Jeralt, she borrowed money from her village and enrolled in the Officers Academy in 1180 at Garreg Mach Monastery and joined the Golden Deer, studying and fighting alongside them.

After the timeskip, if Leonie is a member of Byleth's class, she returns to Garreg Mach on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. If not recruited, on the Azure Moon route she remains with Claude and fights alongside him in the Battle at Gronder on Leicester's side, while on the Crimson Flower route she defends the Great Bridge of Myrddin alongside Acheron, Judith and a non-recruited Ignatz. In both circumstances, she can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion. Leonie makes no appearances in the story on the Silver Snow route, but it is most likely she is one of the many casualties of the Battle at Gronder.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Leonie is a speed-oriented unit who excels on the merit of her great combat arts and her high speed. Starting out in the Golden Deer, Leonie has the highest speed base, enabling her to consistently double enemies with lightweight equipment or, on maddening mode, resist getting doubled. Leonie also starts with Tempest Lance, the strongest early game combat art, and is poised to get Curved Shot, allowing her to weaken enemies from a safe distance, with fairly minimal investment. As the game progresses, Leonie's speed will only get better with her having the highest speed growth in the game, DLC characters excluded, granting Leonie surprising survivability on the enemy phase on maddening solely by virtue of not getting doubled by enemies. Leonie's personal skill of Rivalry also adds to her bulk by reducing damage received by two when adjacent to a male ally. Rivalry also has great synergy with other units' personal skills, particularly Seteth who has Guardian to reduce damage received by an additional three points in addition to having Rally Defense, meaning that if he rallies her and stays adjacent to her, Leonie effectively gets nine defense and five resistance overall. The combat arts Leonie obtains later in the game give her an even stronger player phase. With a C+ in bows, Leonie gets Break Shot which is essentially an upgrade to Curved Shot in that it weakens enemies from a safe range and reduces the enemy's defense by five. Furthermore, with an A-rank in bows, Leonie gets Point-Blank Volley, one of the best combat arts in the game. This combat art grants Leonie a guaranteed consecutive follow-up attack. With a strong enough bow, Leonie can double the ridiculously fast enemies in maddening and often one-round them. While it does require Leonie to attack at melee range, unlike the Sniper-exclusive Hunter's Volley, Leonie can use Point-Blank Volley in any class.

Leonie's best promotion pathways focus on maximizing her speed or giving her inherent Bowfaire or Lancefaire. If you want Leonie to be as fast as possible, and use that speed for more than just doubling, then you are best off promoting Leonie into a Soldier, then Pegasus Knight, then end in Falcon Knight. Leonie's high speed makes her an excellent dodge tank when combined with Alert Stance+ and flying classes' inherent Avoid +10. Moreover, with maximum investment into her speed stat, she should be able to resist getting doubled by the fastest enemy units on maddening mode. Alternatively, to maximize damage with Point-Blank Volley, Leonie should become a Fighter, than a Brigand, followed by Sniper, and ending in Bow Knight. Brigand is recommended in this class promotion path to give Leonie access to Death Blow by mastering the class, giving her twelve extra damage when using Point-Blank Volley; bear in mind, though, that a side promotion to Brigand for Death Blow is recommended for all physically-oriented class promotion paths. Typically, you can choose either Bow Knight or Sniper for a bow-focused unit, however, since Leonie already has Point-Blank Volley and since Bow Knight gives Canto and higher movement, there is little reason for Leonie to stay as a Sniper.

Out-of-House Performance

When recruited outside of the Golden Deer, Leonie comes with training in lances and bows. Leonie requires Byleth to have at least a C-rank in lances, which is convenient since Byleth's best classes—i.e. The Wyvern Lord and Falcon Knight—require proficiency in lances. In addition to being convenient to recruit, Leonie is well on her way to becoming a Bow Knight and achieving an A-rank in bows, meaning that with a little more investment she will gain access to her best combat art and essentially perform the same as she would in the Golden Deer route. Moreover, recruiting her into the Black Eagles unlocks a paralogue which grants the player The Inexhaustible, a more powerful Brave Bow with a slight auto-healing effect.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Role

Leonie was first added to the game in a special summer variation as part of the Summer Vibrance update, and was made available to players in the forty-second edition of the Tempest Trials+, "Angling to Win", which initially ran from June 22, 2021 through July 2, 2021. The aforementioned summer variation of Leonie is the only one currently available in Heroes, and is based on her Three Houses Part I incarnation.

Leonie was inspired to become a mercenary by Jeralt; she calls him her master and herself his top disciple. She is very proud of her role as Jeralt's only apprentice, and can get aggressive about it. She goes so far as to scorn Byleth for not being grateful enough for being Jeralt's child. Leonie values protecting those who can not protect themselves, and lives to do just that. She is very straight-forward, never sugar coating or beating around the bush. She is very proud of her origins as a commoner, as it has greatly contributed to her rough and sincere nature.

Because Leonie borrowed money to attend the Officers Academy, she strives to take as much of an advantage from the opportunity as she can. She can enjoy some activities many may find boring, and regards helping her classmates as a form of training.

Leonie does not care about the gap between herself as a commoner and her classmates as nobles. Despite her strait-forward nature, Leonie has a more timid side, which is apparent in her dislike of insects. She relishes in tales of Jeralt's deeds as if they were happening to her, potentially as she believes she could never experience tales like his.

Endings

Leonie, The Blade Breaker II (single ending)
Leonie joined up with the mercenaries formerly led by Jeralt. As his greatest apprentice, she quickly took on a leadership role and eventually even inherited the title of Blade Breaker. She came to be known as Jeralt the Second, as she began to resemble him in all things—including his drinking habits. She left behind many unpaid tavern tabs.

Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced his marriage to Leonie shortly after becoming the leader of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. Though she accepted the status of queen, Leonie disliked the pageantry of the position and refused to part with her weapons. She avoided court and instead founded the Jeralt Company, and elite group of soldiers hand-picked from the royal guard. They mostly busied themselves by hunting down bandits and monsters, but they also stopped the remnants of the Imperial army from organizing a revolt. It is rumored that one knight of rare skill who fought alongside Leonie in the Jeralt Company was none other than the king himself.

Byleth, Guardian of Order & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced his marriage to Leonie shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Though she accepted the status of the archbishop's wife, Leonie disliked the formality of the position and refused to part with her weapons. Avoiding involvement with the church, she founded the Jeralt Company, an elite group of soldiers hand-picked from the Knights of Seiros. They served as guards to the archbishop in peacetime, and were first to respond to reports of bandits or monsters. It is rumored that one knight of rare skill who fought alongside Leonie in the Jeralt Company was none other than the archbishop himself.

Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II (Crimson Flower)
Almost immediately after Byleth and Leonie had finished their lively wedding ceremony, the struggle against those that slither in the dark began in earnest. Leaving the Black Eagle Strike Force behind, the pair formed a new group called the Jeralt Company and invited all their friends and allies to join them. The group fought all across Fódlan, cementing the Empire's victory and cleaning up its enemies. With Fódlan secure, all but two members of the Jeralt Company returned to their homes. The couple continued their careers as mercenaries, taking on all kinds of tasks, from monster hunting to tavern security. Their strength and humility were well loved.

Claude, King of Unification & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Leonie returned to Sauin Village to repay her debts and mysteriously vanished afterwards. Some years later, when trade between Fódlan and Almyra began in earnest, the village received notice that the Almyran king would be passing through on his way to Garreg Mach. The village rushed to prepare themselves. When the anticipated day arrived, they were shocked to find Leonie at the king's side. She had gone to visit Claude in Almyra, and had ended up staying to become his queen. Faced with the sight of Leonie in the resplendent clothing of a monarch, her father and the other villagers could do nothing but stand in mute amazement.

Felix, Meandering Sword & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind, Crimson Flower)
After the war, Felix abandoned his noble title and chose to make a living with his sword. He accepted Leonie as his partner, and together they became wandering mercenaries. Their different fighting styles complemented one another well, and their combined skill was enough to handle any enemy. Some time later, the mercenary group formerly led by Jeralt joined them, and under their leadership, became the most feared company in Fódlan. After the post-war chaos passed, however, work became scarce, and the pair eventually became so desperate that they rebranded themselves as street performers. They proved surprisingly capable in their new profession.

Felix, The Shield's Successor & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II (Azure Moon)
Leonie took over the mercenary group formerly led by Jeralt. She made a name for herself as a superb mercenary and was eventually hired by the young Duke Fraldarius, Felix. He entrusted her with many important tasks, and over time, Fraldarius territory became Leonie's home base. The two spent a great deal of time drinking together, but Felix, knowing Leonie's reputation and habits, learned to extract her payment for the drinks in advance.

Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Leonie, who had become a renowned mercenary. The choice came as a shock to the public, who could not see what the pair had in common, but those who knew them well saw it as inevitable due to the strength of the bond they had forged in the war. As a ruling couple, they used their varying talents to usher in a new age of prosperity and carve their names into history.

Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Leonie took over the mercenary company formerly led by Jeralt. She ran out of money constantly, however, due to sending all of her earnings back to her village, and so developed a reputation for unpaid tavern tabs. When she came upon the inn that Raphael had been helping to run with his family, she was overjoyed to finally find a place that would trust her enough to open a new tab. In her years frequenting the establishment, she accrued such a massive debt to Raphael that the only way to pay him off was to work for him. By the time the debt was finally paid, she had moved in with him. They lived together happily for the rest of their days.

Ignatz, Worldly Artist & Leonie, The Blade Breaker II
Leonie took over the mercenary company formerly led by Jeralt. Though she earned a great deal of renown, the work began to dry up as the postwar chaos subsided. It was around that time she had a chance reunion with Ignatz, who had persuaded his family to allow him to wander the world as an artist. Remembering how they had once promised to travel together, Leonie disbanded her mercenary company and resolved to accompany him. The pair left Fódlan, searching for sights hitherto unseen. Where their journey took them remains unknown.

Leonie, The Blade Breaker II & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose
While Seteth remained at the monastery after the war to restore the Church of Seiros, Leonie wandered the land in pursuit of her dream to become an elite mercenary. It seemed as if their paths would never cross again. Years later, after they had achieved their goals, both retired and disappeared from the public eye at the same time, as if it had been prearranged. Though no official records of their lives after that time exist, it is rumored that a happy couple resembling them was sighted in a small mountain village. The couple was known for their excellent fishing skills, and for cooking up their bountiful catches for all the local villagers and travelers.

Leonie, The Blade Breaker II & Alois, Sun of the Knights (Silver Snow, Azure Moon, Verdant Wind)
Leonie joined up with the mercenaries formerly led by Jeralt. As his greatest apprentice, she quickly took on a leadership role, and eventually even inherited the title of Blade Breaker. No matter where she went, however, she was burdened with Jeralt's unpaid tavern tabs. Angry with Alois for pushing these debts upon her, she went to Garreg Mach to force him to pay half the debt. She encountered a smiling Alois, who had become captain of the Knights of Seiros, and who was all too happy in his new prosperity to take the debts back on. It is said that Leonie developed quite the drinking habit once she was free to visit taverns whenever she liked.

Leonie, The Blade Breaker II & Alois, Family Man (Crimson Flower)
Leonie joined up with the mercenaries formerly led by Jeralt. As his greatest apprentice, she quickly took on a leadership role, and eventually even inherited the title of Blade Breaker. No matter where she went, however, she was burdened with Jeralt's unpaid tavern tabs. Angry with Alois for pushing these debts upon her, she went to see him with the intention of forcing him to pay half the debt. But when she arrived, she found a suntanned Alois happily lounging after a hard day's work on his family farm. Leonie found herself unable to go through with it. She did become a world-renowned mercenary, but she spent the whole of her career paying off debt.

Leonie, The Blade Breaker II & Shamir, Distant Archer
Leonie assumed leadership of the mercenaries formerly led by Jeralt. One day, she was hired to protect a noble who had been warned of a bandit attack. The warning note listed all of the noble's foul deeds, and was signed with the image of a spider, which Leonie recognized. Just as she suspected, the one who came on the appointed day was none other than Shamir. Leonie was happy to break her contract on this occasion, and even offered Shamir a position in her company. The result was the most famous mercenary group ever to exist in Fódlan. It is said that their flag bore the image of a spider, and...another vaguely arachnid creature.

Leonie’s a competitive, outgoing Hero who’s working hard to become a mercenary. For this outing, she’s full of energy for a trip to the beach! That sporty swimsuit looks great on her! And I see that she’s still wearing the special charm her mentor gave her. She never lets it out of her sight! Leonie is a talented archer, and she’s brought a special bow that’s decorated with sunflowers along with her. I hear that Hilda put in the effort to make it for her! Isn’t it adorable? I’d say Leonie’s a lot like a sunflower herself, soaking up the sun and filling up on positive summer energy! Even I’m getting hyped up just watching her from the sidelines!

Trivia

  • Leonie has a personalized class sprite in the game's files depicting her in the Bow Knight class, which would have been used during Part II; it was left unused for unknown reasons.
  • As an enemy, Leonie has access to the Defiant Strength ability, which she cannot normally obtain as the Hero class is locked to male units.
  • Leonie's S support illustration in Three Houses's initial release depicted her without her necklace; this was fixed in version 1.0.2.
