“ | I said "sweeten the deal", didn't I? Don't get me wrong, I'll take the gold, too. Later. Unless you've got more of these. ...Have you got more of these?! | ” | — Gaius, to Chrom |

Gaius (Japanese: ガイア Guire) is a playable character in Fire Emblem Awakening. He is a Thief living in Ylisse and will do any job if paid the right price. He loves sweets and has candy hidden all over his body.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
He appears as an enemy in Chapter 6 with Validar's forces. While most of the others under Validar's command entered Ylisstol to assassinate Emmeryn, Gaius was only told that they were going to rob a vault.[1] Gaius, having no intention of harming Emmeryn, even calling her as a "sweet lady",[2] is then easily persuaded to switch sides by Chrom and Lissa's bag of sweets after a brief conversation.
Despite not being a legacy character, there is a unique item named for Gaius available through the Barracks or event tiles: Gaius's Confect.

Personality and character
Gaius is a cool and collected individual. Although he is a professional thief, he is loyal to his morals, refusing to participate in Validar's assassination attempt on Emmeryn. This is further proved when he stays loyal to the group, while understanding some of the Shepherd's view on him, shrugging them off immediately and reassuring them his loyalty. Another example is when he refused to harm Maribelle in the past and tried to help out Chrom and Lissa with stuff he believed was a must be for anyone, regardless of their social standing. Gaius is also a slob; he does not see any problems with wearing the same clothes for an extended amount of time until Cordelia convinced him to tidy himself up. His hobbies include honey collecting, sewing, card tricks, and making his own confections.
He is aloof and loves sweets and candies; to a degree it is implied he gets paid with them instead of gold. His in-game expressions are references to this, with him saying things like "Piece of cake" or "Sweet" when he levels up or receives help from an ally.
He gets the most nosebleeds in the army. In conversations, he tends to give other people nicknames, with all known nicknames detailed in the following table. In conversations with Sully, she is the one that gives him one instead: "Chuckles".
Character | Nickname | Notes |
---|---|---|
Robin | "Bubbles" | Used regardless of Robin's gender. |
Chrom | "Blue" | Due to his hair. |
Lissa | "Princess" | Mocking her delicateness. |
Virion | "Your lordship" | Used ironically to refer to his dukedom status. |
Miriel | "Specs" | Short for "spectacles", or glasses. |
Sumia | "Stumbles" | Due to her clumsiness. |
Maribelle | "Twinkles" | Mocking her nobility. |
Panne | "Whiskers" | Due to her animal appearance. |
Nowi | "Kid" | Due to her young appearance. |
Libra | "Padre" | Italian for "priest". |
Tharja | "Sunshine" | Used ironically to mock her gloomy demeanor. |
Anna | "Red" | Due to her hair. |
Olivia | "Babe", "Baby" | Used even in conversations outside of S-support. |
Henry | "Junior" | Due to his age. |

Trivia

- Gaius placed fourth in the men's bracket on the official Awakening website's character popularity poll.[3] Like the other high ranking characters in said poll he received a swimsuit graphic in the Scramble series of Awakening's DLC; specifically in Summer Scramble.
- In Gaius's swimsuit graphic, he has a piece of cloth tied around his left forearm. It is possible, and heavily implied by Gaius's conversation with Anna,[4] that this is meant to cover up his convict's tattoo mentioned in his support conversation with Robin.[5]
- The cloth around his arm also appears in the artwork for his Thief Exposed variant in Heroes.
