Appearance(s)

Barst (Japanese: バーツ Barts) is a fighter in the Fire Emblem series. During the War of Shadows, he was a mercenary partner of Ogma, serving under King Mostyn of Talys. Under Mostyn's orders, he assisted Marth. After the War of Shadows, he left Archanea to become a pirate, but returned to Archanea and once again served under Marth in the War of Heroes.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Out of all the axe users in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light—Barst, Bord, Cord, and Darros—Barst is the best by a decent margin. He has a high enough weapon level to use the Devil Axe and the Hammer, and with his solid strength base and growth, he can take full advantages of those weapons to take out bosses; he also has better base stats and growths in most important stats like strength, speed, and defense. Unfortunately, he still falls a bit short compared to the stronger units of different weapon types in the long term, particularly due to his class—Fighter has relatively low movement, and lacks a promotion. He is most useful in the early-game, when units that can double will struggle to deal with high-defense enemies, and before tomes and bonus damage-dealing weapons become more prevalent.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Barst joins the army in Chapter 2 of Shadow Dragon with good bases. Barst also has decent growths and uses one of the best weapon types in the game, axes. These aspects combined automatically make Barst a very good long-term unit. Even at base, he is capable of contributing thanks to his fairly good stats, but he is going to grow into an excellent combat unit as time progresses.

Barst's specialty in axes will allow him to use effective weaponry such as the Hammer and later, the Poleaxe, both of which are excellent weapons to use for the majority of the game. However, he starts with a D rank at base, which means that his rank needs to be raised to C before he can use effective axes. Considering his decent growths and good bases, it is worth using him so that he can reach C axes, as it will allow him to one-shot enemy armor knights with the Hammer, which alone is already helpful, especially on higher difficulties. Upon promotion, it is highly advisable to reclass him to Hero since he only loses a small amount of Strength in exchange for a whopping +4 Speed, which will almost certainly cause him to start doubling.

Overall, Barst is a very useful long-term unit, and is also fairly useful from the get-go thanks to his combination of good base stats, decent growths, and weapon choice. Barst additionally faces little to no competition, as there are very few competent axe-focused units in the game, and none of them join as early as Barst.

Barst is a warrior who volunteered to join a group of mercenaries from Talys! Nowadays though, he puts his hatchet to use in his work as a woodcutter. During his mercenary days, Barst joined the Altean army as part of a group led by Ogma. At his side were his fellow mercenaries, Bord and Cord, and together, the trio of axe-wielding warriors fought their way through the War of Shadows. Barst remained with the Archanean army for a short while, but eventually deserted, having tired of warfare. He then spent some time as a pirate, but it was while swashbuckling on the high seas that he realized the quiet life of a woodcutter was his true calling. Throughout his various careers, there's one thing that's always stuck with Barst—his trusty axe! Wait, was he using the same axe to cut wood that he used to… Never mind. I don't want to think about it… Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of axe-related works he can do for the Order of Heroes!
