Shadows Behind the Scenes (Japanese: 暗躍する影たち Shadows Operating Behind the Scenes) is the first sidequest in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. In order to reach this chapter, the player must either complete the previous chapter in a certain number of turns depending upon difficulty or complete the Prologue with one allied casualty or less.

Plot

Main articles: Shadows Behind the Scenes/Script and Shadows Behind the Scenes/Conversations

A group of assassins led by Clarisse sets out to kill every one of Marth's former allies in the War of Shadows, starting with Wrys. As the Altean army approaches to save him, Katarina warns her not to underestimate Marth's forces. Marth and his allies successfully drive off the assassins and rescue Wrys, who offers to shave Kris's head bald.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

In order to access this sidequest, the player must have either cleared the Prologue losing no more than one unit, or cleared Chapter 3 in a certain number of turns. The turn count of the latter requirement varies by difficulty, as follows:

Difficulty Turn count
Normal 24
Hard 28
Maniac 35
Lunatic 38
Lunatic′ 43

Wrys starts off dead smack in the middle of the map with a Knight and Archer driving him into a pincer. If you haven't killed or otherwise dealt with them by about turn 4, he's getting penned in the dead book. To avoid this, you need to butcher the five men closest to you on turn 1 and send in a Pegasus Knight to kill Wrys' pursuers on turn 2. Palla can easily pick off the northern Archer. If Marth has 13 Speed and a decently forged Rapier, he can take care of one of the Knights. Cavalier Kris can dart in and kill the southern Archer, and two solid units can tag team one more Knight. This leaves you in a pickle, as none of your other units are likely to be able to reliably deal with the last Knight. You can reclass Arran to a Sniper and bank on a 12% crit, or you can use the Master Seal to promote one of your units early for a significant power boost. Either way, once they are taken care of, Palla can go across the southern mountains to intercept the Knight while Kris can draw the Archer away, and you can take the east half of the map at your own pace.
