A Brush in the Teeth/Script
Marth makes his way into the Samsooth Mountains, where a cleric named Lena had recently gone in order to tend to the sick. The Soothsires discover and attempt to kill her, but one of their thieves, Julian, falls in love with her, betrays his comrades, and helps her escape. The two discover that Marth is in the area and decide to join his forces. Meanwhile, the fearsome swordsman Navarre attempts to pursue them, but Caeda stops him and gambles her life to recruit him. Navarre, unwilling to turn his sword against a woman, agrees to lend Marth his aid. Marth clears the mountains out and makes off with a stash of gold they were hiding.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
Resetting until Hyman has 9 Skill will be mildly beneficial. In this chapter, you get Julian, your basic Thief with good Speed and poor combat ability; Lena, a Cleric packing a Warp Staff; and Navarre, a speedy yet frail swordsman. Lena is always a direct upgrade over Wrys, but on the Famicom she is crippled by the inability of staff wielders to gain experience outside of surviving combat, while on the DS she is actually extremely good due to her immediate ability to use Warp and decent growths all around. From now on, all maps in Shadow Dragon will have two save points. It is good practice to use one after the initial wave of enemies has been defeated and the other when only the boss remains.
By this point, you should have the hang of the basic strategy for the first few chapters. Immediately send Julian and Lena to join your main forces and focus on dealing with Navarre and his 5 cronies. Navarre's Killing Edge makes him very dangerous as both an enemy and an ally, so make sure to recruit him. Fortunately, the north mountains make an excellent chokepoint that your swordsmen can take advantage of. Once they are all dead, you can round on the three fighters approaching from the west. If you are having trouble with them, consider making a vertical wall of units such that each unit can only be attacked once. This can help keep your middling units alive. Once the enemies have been dealt with, heal up, save, and make your way to the boss.
Hyman is an animal. His 15 Strength and 14 Speed ensure that the only units who stand a realistic chance against him are Ogma and Navarre. Navarre needs +1 Strength or Speed to avoid getting doubled with the Killing Edge, Ogma needs +1 Strength or Speed to avoid getting doubled with the Steel Sword, and Ogma wants to have 4 Luck to avoid critical hits from 9 Skill Hyman. Put one of the two in front of him with the Killing Edge equipped, wait until you get a critical hit of your own, and then run him down with Navarre, Ogma, and a third swordsman.
