Meeting (Japanese: 出会い Encounter) is the first chapter in the prologue of Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem.
Plot
- Main article: Meeting/Script
Three years after the conclusion of the War of Shadows, a young knight wannabe named Kris arrives at Altea Castle to begin their knight training and quickly befriends a prospective strategist named Katarina. The veteran knight in charge of training, Jagen, instructs the candidates to pair off and face real Altean knights in mock combat. Kris partners with Katarina and successfully defeats Jagen. Afterwards, the two listen to a speech by Marth thanking them for lending him their strength.

As a general rule of thumb, it is wise to set the first playthrough to Hard difficulty to merge the male reclass pools, then do Lunatic second so the player can unlock Lunatic Reverse.
Avatar creation
Before you even begin, you must create your Avatar (herein referred to by their default name of Kris), and your choices regarding their class and fortunes here will have heavy ramifications throughout the prologue and the main story since Kris is by a country mile the best unit in the game. As a general rule of thumb, the most important benchmarks to consider are 14 physical might to two-shot the enemy Soldier and three-shot Jagen, and 9 Speed to double the Soldier when he appears with 5 Speed. Specific classes might be interested in 18 might to two-shot Jagen, 14 Speed to double throughout the prologue, 11 Speed to double Jagen, and 7 Speed to avoid being doubled throughout the prologue. Details for each class are below:
- Mercenary Kris can double Jagen with the Noble's Child or Beauty fortunes, and has a good chance of reaching 14 Speed to double everything in the prologue except Thieves and bosses. He cannot two-shot the Soldier.
- Myrmidon Kris doubles Jagen at base, can guarantee doubles throughout the prologue as a Noble's Child, and even without it will probably hit that benchmark through growths. She cannot two-shot the Soldier.
- Archer Kris absolutely needs one of the following on Lunatic: Orphan to two-shot the Soldier; Priest's Child, Farmer's Child, or Kindness to survive all attacks; Strength and a Strength low-roll from Jagen; Diversity, a Strength low-roll from the Soldier, and an HP or Strength low-roll from Jagen; or Strength low-rolls from both the Soldier and Jagen, or they will be unable to overpower the enemies outright and render the map effectively unwinnable. On Lunatic Reverse, they need Orphan, Priest's Child, Farmer's Child, Kindness, or a Strength low-roll from the Soldier to survive. Beyond that, Noble's Child secures them against being doubled.
- Cavalier Kris can double a low-roll Soldier as a Noble's Child, and male Cavalier Kris can two-shot him with Diversity.
- Fighter Kris two-shots the Soldier at base, and can either two-shot Jagen as an Orphan or double a low-roll Soldier as a Noble's Child. Of the two, Orphan is more valuable since Kris will take a hit from the Soldier either way, but he can get through the map on Lunatic without expending a Vulnerary use if he two-shots Jagen. A boost to Defense from Kindness or Humane is strongly worth considering given his terrible base Defense.
- Knight Kris desperately needs to be a Noble's Child and grow a point Speed in this chapter to avoid getting doubled in the first half of the prologue, and will be heavily reliant on his growths in order to reach the 7 Speed threshold to avoid being doubled later on. Diversity allows him to two-shot the Soldier. His low movement is not as much of a problem in the prologue as it normally is due to the extremely cramped maps.
- Mage Kris absolutely needs to be an Orphan and for Jagen to low-roll HP in order to three-shot him on Lunatic, or their healing will run out before they can defeat him and the map will be rendered unwinnable. They also need to take either Kindness or Strength or for at least one enemy to low-roll Strength in order to avoid being forced to spend a second Vulnerary charge too soon and again render the map unwinnable. Alternately, they can take Clergy's Child or a combination of Farmer's Child and Kindness to tank their way through Jagen's attacks, but if Jagen high-rolls Strength the map is again unwinnable. Lunatic Reverse has no such requirements since the second Vulnerary will keep them alive and the Vantage+ effect is of no consequence. Keep in mind that they need three points of Speed from either Beauty or growths to avoid being doubled later on.
- Pegasus Knight Kris can two-shot the Soldier as an Orphan and double him if he rolls low with Beauty. If she takes Wealthy, she can get a 20% Resistance growth, which is astoundingly good for a physical unit in this game.
Generally speaking, Male Kris with reclass limits removed is better than Male B Kris or Female Kris, who are in turn better than Male A Kris. Fighter and Knight are very popular choices for Kris' starting class due to the former's high power and the latter's high bulk. Archer and Mage Kris on higher difficulties are only recommended for advanced players due to you effectively forsaking your desperately needed main tank for the prologue.
Battle strategy
As long as you aren't reckless here, this is a pretty straightforward map. Don't initiate on the Soldier unless you one-round him (male Cavalier with Noble's Child and Diversity, Fighter with Noble's Child, Pegasus Knight with Orphan and Beauty) or can attack from two range (Archer, Mage). Never initiate on Jagen; let him attack you and use your Vulnerary to patch yourself up when you need to. It's worth it to reset the map until Kris grows HP, Strength/Magic, Speed, and Defense/Resistance to give them a leg up in the coming chapters.
