Class change/Super Famicom games

From Fire Emblem Wiki, your source on Fire Emblem information. By fans, for fans.

This sub-page covers the class change stats for the three Super Famicom games: Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem

The class change system of Mystery of the Emblem is mostly unchanged from Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, using a variety of class-specific items for each class to promote. Four classes which existed in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light without promotion options (Armored Knight, General, Hunter, Horseman) were connected into promotion lines; however, Marth, the Fighter, and the Thief are still incapable of promotion.

Hit points and weapon level do not have a fixed value of increase in class change as other stats do; instead, they increase to reach the promoted class's base HP and weapon level stats. If an individual unit's HP or weapon level stat is already at or beyond the promoted form's base, it will not change upon promotion.

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

"Good work. You're ready to class change to Falcon Knight."

In Genealogy of the Holy War, physical items are not used to class change, effectively removing the main limitation of a small number of available class change items. Class changing can be initiated at any time in the chapter's home castle by selecting a unit and picking the "Class Change" option. After Oifey (first generation) or Lewyn (second generation) confirms the player's intent, the unit in question changes class.

Unlike most other games, what class a unit may change into is an attribute of the unit, not of the class. However, the vast majority of units that share base classes also share promoted classes; the primary exceptions are units in the Sword Fighter and Mage classes. For example:

Unlike most games, a unit becomes capable of changing class at level 20, not 10; a unit who has reached this threshold will be marked on status screens with a green up-pointing arrow. After promotion, their level does not roll back over to 1, but rather remains the same; the game's level cap is 30. In addition to stat bonuses and increased weapon levels, some units gain skills upon promotion.

Class change stat gains are the difference between class base stats of the pre-promotion class and the post-promotion class. However, HP is exempt from this, and does not change with class; and luck is never affected by class change, as all classes have 0 base luck. Additionally, as stat caps for all stats other than HP and luck are equal to (class base + 15), a unit that has maximized a given stat before promotion will also be maximized in that stat after promotion.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

The Thracia 776 class change system reverted to being akin to that of Mystery of the Emblem: class changing is again achieved through the use of items while on the battlefield, instead of having to visit a specific location. Unlike Mystery of the Emblem, this time class changing is achieved entirely through a single item for almost all classes: the Knight Proof. As in Genealogy of the Holy War, what class a unit may change into is determined by that unit, though most units that share their starting class also change into the same class; as in Genealogy, units starting as Sword Fighter or Mage are the primary exceptions.

Leif and Linoan cannot use Knight Proofs to promote, instead requiring specific events to do so. Similarly, Lara—the only female Thief—is capable of promoting to Thief Fighter through normal use of a Knight Proof, but has the option to promote to Dancer through an event in Chapter 12x; unusually, she can promote to Dancer from both Thief and Thief Fighter, and as a Dancer she is still capable of promoting to Thief Fighter through normal use of a Knight Proof.

Weapon level changes are described in terms of the weapon levels themselves without taking weapon experience into account; a "+1" indicates an entire rank's increase (for example, going from C to B), the equivalent of 50 weapon experience points.
