The Free Knight (Japanese: フリーナイト Free Knight) class is a class of sword-using soldiers who ride horses while fighting. They appear only in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War and Fire Emblem: Thracia 776, but later, the Sword Knight class appears, which is virtually identical. They appear along with the Lance Knight, Axe Knight, and Arch Knight classes in those games, although the Cavalier class is present.

Free knights are a quite useful class, as they can move around quickly and have quite balanced stats. In Thracia 776, they can dismount from their horses to travel across certain terrains and enter buildings, and for other purposes. However, since they use swords, they can only attack one space adjacent to them, and their low resistance makes them vulnerable to magic attacks.

Free knights promote to the Ranger class in both games.
