— Jiol, on hearing of Marth's approach
|
Jiol (Japanese: ジオル Jiol) was the king of Gra in the years of the War of Shadows, and the father of Sheena, who was born from his second wife. At the dawn of the war, while Altea and Gra's forces were in Gra fighting the Grust invasion, Gharnef appeared and persuaded Jiol to turn on Altea. Jiol agreed, and the strike unleashed by the soldiers of Gra caught Altea's army unexpectedly, wiping them out and resulting in the death of King Cornelius. Afterward, the combined Gra/Grust army launched an assault on Castle Altea, and Jiol personally took to the pursuit of Marth along with a contingent of knights, but was successfully tricked and led away from Marth by Frey's decoy sacrifice. Years later, Marth and his army stormed Gra, killing Jiol and leaving the remains of Gra in the hands of Sheena.
Role
Upon learning of Marth's approach toward Gra following his reclamation of Altea, Jiol panicked upon learning he had no substantial backup against Marth's might, being left with nothing but Macedonian Pegasus Knights for reinforcements and claiming that among Dolhr's allies no-one seemed to care to offer Gra the same protections shared among the others.

Book 1
Role
As in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, upon learning of Marth's approach toward Gra following his reclamation of Altea, Jiol panicked upon learning he had no substantial backup against Marth's might, being left with nothing but Macedonian Pegasus Knights for reinforcements and claiming that among Dolhr's allies no-one seemed to care to offer Gra the same protections shared among the others. Engaging Marth's forces in battle, Jiol briefly lamented that he should have wiped out Marth and his forces when he had the chance, and died in the battle. With his last breath, he thought of Sheena.

Role
Shortly after his betrayal of Altea and the fall of Cornelius, Jiol led a troupe of powerful Gra knights to pursue Marth in his escape attempt, cornering him in a locked fort. On the advice of Malledus, Frey disguised himself as Marth and fled to the south, successfully luring Jiol and his men away. Upon learning of the deception, Jiol furiously bade his men kill Frey as painfully as possible; Frey survived the encounter, if severely wounded, and eventually rejoined the Altean army.

Personality and character
Jiol was demonstrated to be, post-betrayal of Altea, a cowardly and malicious ruler, seemingly fuelled by the self-serving perspective of whether or not he was in control of the situation at any given time. When he believed himself to have the upper hand in a matter, he was a clear and efficient commander, sometimes bordering into pure bloodthirstiness when especially so or when angered.[1] On the other hand, he did not take kindly to the idea of his grasp on a situation being undermined, reacting angrily to trickery,[2] or breaking down into panic when the tide of events is turned against him.[3]
