Besides, if we lost you now, everything the troops fought and died for would be lost too.
— Jeanne, to Leif

Jeanne (Japanese: ジャンヌ Janne) is a Troubadour from Agustria who, after being orphaned in the Agustrian civil war, was raised by the Leonster knight Finn along with Prince Leif. She fought alongside Leif in his fight to retake the Munster District from the Grannvale Empire, and joined him in allying with Seliph's liberation army.

Jeanne is Nanna's substitute character, filling her role in the story and gameplay if Lachesis died or did not marry in the course of the first generation.

Biography

Jeanne is the second child of Eve of Nordion.[1] When Jeanne and her brother, Tristan were young, the Agustrian civil war occurred and Eve died in battle, orphaning the two. Both children were taken in by Sigurd's army, and in the days before the Battle of Belhalla she was supposed to be sent with her brother and the infant Seliph to find refuge in Isaach, but she was lost on the way. A traveling merchant found and adopted her in Isaach, and she lived with him until the age of seven, when the merchant was killed by a Grannvale soldier. Finn then found her and adopted her, raising her with Leif.[2]

When Leif tried to raise his own liberation army to oppose Grannvale's rule of his homeland, Jeanne was one of his allies and, along with Finn, was one of the few survivors after the catastrophic failure of a raid on Ulster, the base of King Bloom. Knowing that Seliph was on his way with his own liberation army from Isaach, Jeanne assisted Leif in holding out against a siege from Bloom for as long as they could until Seliph could reinforce them, and the two joined forces with Seliph's army when he arrived.

Role

Jeanne is a playable character during the second generation. As Nanna's substitute character, Jeanne only appears if Lachesis wasn't married or was dead at the end of Chapter 5. In Chapter 7, Jeanne—along with Finn and Leif—will appear as player units next to Leonster. In Chapter 8, Jeanne, Leif, and Finn will start next to Leonster castle instead of in the home castle.

  • In Chapter 7, Tristan can talk to Jeanne at any time, giving Jeanne +1 luck.
  • In Chapter 9, Jeanne can visit a certain village in the north-west to receive +3 defense after a conversation with a sleazy Shannan doppelganger. Hermina can also have this conversation, and only one can activate it per playthrough.
  • In Chapter 10, Jeanne can initiate a conversation with Leif at any time, giving Jeanne +3 maximum HP and granting 100 love points between the pair.
  • In the Endgame, if the two are lovers, Jeanne can talk to Seliph or Leif after Edda has been seized, granting each a maximum HP boost (+5 for Leif, +3 for Seliph).

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Jeanne is a substitute unit that joins in Chapter 7. Her primary contributions are as a support unit; she is a mounted unit that can use staves, both of which are useful traits to have. Since she is mounted, she never falls behind the frontline, and since she can use staves, she can heal the player's injured combat units and then reposition herself to safety with Canto. Jeanne only has a C rank in staves before and after promotion, so she cannot use any utility staves other than Return. However, just using healing staves like Heal and Mend is enough to make her a useful contributor for a while.

Jeanne's baseline combat is very poor, so turning her into a combat unit requires heavy investment. Her growth rates in most areas are poor, and so are her base stats. She also has no skills, so she cannot double enemies, because she lacks the Follow-Up skill. She can obtain it through the Follow-Up Ring, but the ring alone does not make her a good combat unit, as her baseline attacking power is low due to her poor stats. At best, she can exploit her okay magic stat and the low resistance of enemies by using magic swords, but this only works at 2-range. Jeanne receives a notable boost to her strength and defense when she promotes, making her combat with physical weapons a bit better, as well as improving her durability; however, due to her low growth rates and base stats, even these bonuses do not make her very good at fighting.

Trying to turn Jeanne into a combat unit is not worth it to begin with, because she can contribute as a utility unit instead. Utility is in much more demand, and especially mounted healing is rare, with only Jeanne/Nanna, a promoted Leif, and a promoted Fee/Hermina being able to provide it in the second generation. Jeanne can use the Follow-Up Ring and strong weapons to help her win more fights in the arena and level up more quickly, but the easier method to give Jeanne experience is to have her buy a Return staff and spam it for several turns.

Jeanne's utility falls off in the late segment of the second generation, as she cannot use Restore to remove status staff effects, Physic to heal from a safe distance, or Fortify to heal many units at once. That said, many units take a back seat lategame due to the prevalence of magic-using enemies, whom very few player characters can safely engage and fight. Jeanne at least has a decent resistance stat, largely thanks to her base of 6, so she can stay at the frontlines a bit more safely than the characters whose resistance is close to 0.
