— August to Leif

Across the River (Japanese: 渡河作戦 River crossing operation) is the twenty-second chapter of Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.
Plot
- Main article: Across the River/Script
Leif and his forces reach River Thracia, which separates them from Munster. Leif and August discuss the river, and August tells Leif about the many battles that have been fought on it – including the battle that claimed the life of Leif’s grandfather, King Kalf, as the knights of Connacht under command of Raydrik betrayed him. August then warns Leif that River Thracia has historically been easy to defend, so the ensuing battle is bound to be difficult.
In the meantime, the enemy general – Cohen – argues with Saias over whether the latter should retreat. Saias wants to stay with Cohen and defend the river, but Cohen wants to send him away. Cohen recalls the tale of how he sheltered Saias from Manfroy in his childhood, and how Saias's own mother – Aida – gave her life to protect her son. Later in life, Saias became a military officer at Manfroy's own suggestion, because Manfroy did not realize who Saias was. Then, Saias gained the trust of Emperor Arvis, making his position quite safe. However, with the Loptian Order now wielding more power than the emperor, Saias is unsafe yet again. Manfroy fears Saias's bloodline and would likely eliminate him for bearing major Holy Blood of Fjalar, so Saias must survive to preserve that legacy.
After Cohen and Saias's conversation, Reinhardt arrives and speaks with Saias. Saias is surprised to hear that Reinhardt did not go to Miletos with Ishtar, to which he responds that she considered herself safe enough with just Prince Julius at her side. Saias then asks Reinhardt whether he knew that his sister, Olwen, sided with the rebels. Reinhardt replies that he did know, but that he hopes he can bring her back to her senses. Saias tells him that Olwen is old enough to make her own choices instead of following her brother's path. Reinhardt expresses concern that it might mean their paths have diverged, to which Saias says that Reinhardt should still speak with Olwen if he has the opportunity.
The battle begins soon after, and Leif's army ends up victorious, successfully crossing the river and killing or capturing Cohen. Regardless of Cohen's fate, Saias leaves the battlefield during the fight, either after Cohen's death or due to Cohen warping him out as Leif's forces approach his position. If Olwen is able to speak with Reinhardt during the battle, he gives her the Blessed Sword, then declares that they are now enemies. Reinhardt can either be killed alongside his forces or not, but whatever is the case, he never appears again.
Once the battle is over, August and Leif ruminate on the bloodshed, hoping that it was for a good cause. August then snaps out of it and orders Leif to hurry, as they must proceed into Munster.

Units are arranged based on their position in deployment order after Leif.
When a player unit crosses the river to the east bank (acts within columns 21–30, rows 1–23), the western bridge is removed and Reinhardt and the Gelb Ritter begin to move unprovoked.

Strategy

At this point in the game, if you have, including Leif, 4 or fewer units left alive (3 or fewer if one of them is Mareeta and Galzus wasn't killed or captured in an earlier appearance), then the game is softlocked. There simply aren't enough recruitable units left to make a party of 6 for the final chapter, and the last chance to retrieve captured units has passed.
The ideal strategy for this chapter, as with most in Thracia 776's lategame, is to use Warp to complete the chapter in one turn. You will need at least two uses of Warp, and it is also advisable to bring Tina to steal Cohen's Master Lance and a flier to get a free capture and access to all of his items. Tina will need at least 13 magic to steal Berserk, so you may need another staff user with Magic Up and at least 3 points of magic above her base. Additional Warps can be used to send units to the southwest and southeast houses, as they contain a Warp and Rescue staff, respectively, and any 9 movement unit can pick up a Pure Water from the northwest village. Warp the flier in, capture Cohen, and wait next to the gate, or Warp in a boss killer and kill Cohen, then Warp Leif onto the castle, trade away Cohen's inventory if he was captured, and finish the chapter.
