Role

Alva joins Selphina in the defense of Hannibal's mansion during Chapter 9. Alva does not have a single line of dialogue outside of his death and retreat quotes.

Alva accompanies Leif's liberation army until at least the liberation of Munster. His involvement, if any, with the war after Leif's forces merged with Seliph's is unknown, as he does not appear in Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.

Analysis

Alva joins in Chapter 9 and is extremely underleveled for his join time. With only level 2, putting him far away from promotion, and abysmal base stats for his join time, Alva requires significant investment to catch up with other units. He can only use lances outdoors and only swords indoors, preventing him from manipulating the weapon triangle. His weapon ranks are also very low; indoors, he is restricted to D rank swords, which is better than Cain's E rank, but his lance weapon rank is E, although he's close to getting a D rank. This prevents him from using stronger weapons to circumvent his low stats, making it even harder to train him. Compared to Cain, he has better bases and growths in speed, skill and luck, but less strength, defense and HP. Since he has access to Steel Swords from the beginning, he does slightly better than him on indoors maps, but they are both redundant as Lance Knights because Finn joins at the start and is better than them with no investment. His growths are decent, but he relies on them, has no skills nor action stars and his FCM is only 1, so he can't crit reliably.

If Alva receives the significant investment he needs, he can grow into a competent combat unit. However, he requires more work than most other units in the game. Without favoritism, he is extremely underwhelming and typically benched at the first opportunity.

Alva is nondescript, and given no explicit personality traits. His ending indicates that he has a "jovial and friendly nature".

Alva, Lance of Leonster
At his own request, Alva was reassigned by Leif and Altena to a post in the former region of South Thracia. There, he strived to quell the area's civil unrest, and restore order to the war-torn land. At first, the locals treated him with distrust, referring to him only as "the Northerner." Yet his jovial and friendly nature eventually won over the people's hearts, and they treated him as one of their own.
