“ | However, being together with Prince Marth, and fighting that war by his side... I learned something. That the key to success, more than pursuing power alone...is to join forces with your comrades. | ” | — Merric |

Merric (Japanese: マリク Marich) is an Altean noble and a good friend of Altean royalty Marth and Elice. Having studied in Khadein before the War of Shadows, he is a mage with the unique ability to wield the wind spell Excalibur, bestowed upon him by his master, Wendell. He was one of Marth's trusted allies in his wars to liberate Archanea from the clutches of the Dolhr Empire.
Merric is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, both books of Mystery of the Emblem, and their respective remakes; he is notable for being the first magic user in the entire Fire Emblem series. He also appears as a bonus playable character character in Awakening and as a summonable unit in Heroes.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Merric is recruited in Chapter 4 in a village by Marth. He and Marth, having known each other since childhood, fondly greet each other, and Merric explains that he has been in Khadein to study magic, having come to Aurelis to find Marth. When Marth requests that Merric join his party, he agrees, wishing to show off the might of his Excalibur tome. As well, Merric can be used to recruit Wendell in Chapter 5 by talking to him.
Notably, Merric is the first magic user to join Marth's ranks, being of the Mage class.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Merric is the first Mage available, and has exclusive access to the tome Excalibur, which is one of the most useful tomes in the game; it has 13 might—higher than any tome other than Aura—a fairly low weight of 3, higher crit than any other tome at 20, and the most uses of any tome in the game at 33. It is the best tome available until the Aura tome in Chapter 11; however, Aura is exclusive to Linde, and because of Aura's high weight and Linde's low base speed, she will be unable to double with it for a long time. Because of this, the only tome to generally match Excalibur is the Thoron tome first available in Chapter 14—Thoron has the same might and weight as Excalibur but has less crit and durability. With Excalibur, Merric will deal the highest magical damage for 13 chapters, and potentially beyond. Merric's base weapon level of 5 and growth of 80% also means that he can likely use any other tome when it becomes available. Because enemies always have no resistance and tomes do a set amount of damage, this magic damage is highly valued, and is one of the best ways to defeat bosses.
Merric's movement is low at only 6, so he will be unable to keep up with other units as easily. He is also very frail with only 20 HP and 4 defense; while his HP growth is high, his defense is not, and he will likely die to any enemy that doubles him. His speed of 6 and growth of 50%, while good, is not enough to consistently double faster enemies. He can promote to a Bishop, which grants him very significant advantages; notably his speed goes up to 14, his defense goes up to 8, and he gains the ability to use staves. Staff use is especially good, since he can use very useful staves like Warp and Physic. He cannot promote until Chapter 19 at the earliest when the first Bishop's Ring becomes available, and he has to compete for it with other Mages and Curates. Even if he does not promote, however, he can contribute strong magic damage, and likely defeat many weaker, slower enemies throughout the game.
Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
Book 1
Role
Merric, for the most part, serves the same role in Book 1 as he did in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light. However, there is a key difference in his recruitment; due to the fact that Battle in the Lea was removed from Mystery of the Emblem, he is instead recruited in Champions of Aurelis, the fourth chapter of Mystery of the Emblem Book 1, previously the fifth chapter of Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light.

- In Mystery of the Emblem, promotion gains for HP and weapon level consist of giving the character as many points as necessary—the "x" value shown in the table—to reach the promoted class's base value. If the character's value for one of those two stats is higher than their promoted class's base value, they will not receive any bonus in that stat.
Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
In Book 1, Merric joins in Chapter 4 with terrible base stats, but carries a personal weapon—the Excalibur tome. The tome has excellent stats—12 might, 3 weight, 100 hit, 30 crit, 25 uses, and effectiveness against flying units. With Excalibur, Merric will be able to contribute from the moment he joins without any investment. Excalibur is strong enough by itself to one-shot enemy flying units, and with a critical hit, it can one-shot most enemies. Considering the overwhelming majority of enemies in Mystery of the Emblem have no resistance, Merric will deal high damage most of the time.
Merric gains access to staves upon promotion to Bishop; with his high weapon level growth, he will likely be able to use most staves in the game, with the exception of personal staves. The first Bishop's Ring in Book 1 can be obtained in Chapter 15; Merric will compete with Linde and Clerics to promote, but his strong combat makes him a good candidate for promotion with it.
Book 2
Role
Merric is recruited in Chapter Ten of Book 2, and is available from the start of the first turn. Here, he has returned to Khadein to further bolster his magical repertoire, but after Khadein swears allegiance to Archanea, Merric is attacked by a mage corps led by his rival, Arlen.
After being rescued, Merric joins forces with Marth once again. In the final chapter, Merric is needed in order to break Elice, with whom he is in love, out of Medeus's control by speaking with her.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
In Book 2, Merric joins in Chapter 10 with pretty decent base stats. His base level is 10, and he can promote immediately using one of the available Bishop's Rings such as the one from Chapter 9, the chapter before Merric joins. He might have to wait for the Chapter 14 Bishop Ring if the player decided to promote a different magic user and didn't buy enough ones in the Chapter 5 Secret Shop, however. Promotion allows Merric to use staves, and thus contribute without entering combat—with his high base weapon level, he will be able to use most staves with no additional investment.
Merric carries his personal tome Excalibur, which is just as useful in Book 2 as in Book 1; it has among the best stats of any tome and is effective against flying enemies—strong Wyverns are common in many chapters following Merric's recruitment. Additionally, enemy resistance is generally low, so Merric will deal high damage to most enemies throughout the game, even without Excalibur.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Role
In Shadow Dragon, Merric fulfills the same role that he did in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, joining Marth's army at his request after having trained in Khadein. As well, he can once again be used to recruit his teacher, Wendell. However, his role was somewhat expanded, having received two new scenes.
In Chapter 11, after Marth recruits Linde, he may speak with her. The two then bond over their shared Mage status. In Chapter 24, after Elice is recruited in the previous chapter, Merric may speak with her; he vows to protect her, but gets flustered when she finds his actions endearing, setting the tone for their future relationship.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Merric joins in Chapter 4 and is the first unit who joins as a Mage. Like in previous installments, he carries the Excalibur tome, which is very useful; it has 13 might, only 1 weight, 100 hit, 20 crit, and effectiveness against flying units. Even though Merric will likely never be able to double on higher difficulties, he will still be able to one-shot flying units with the tome.
None of Merric's base stats are impressive. His 20 HP and 4 defense can allow him to take a hit even on higher difficulties, but he will usually die to anything beyond that. His magic and speed growths are fairly high, but on higher difficulties, he cannot reliably double or deal significant damage with any tome except Excalibur.
Merric can later be promoted to Sage to gain some statistical bonuses and access to E-rank staves, but having E-rank staves is not very useful, and increasing his Staff level will take much time. If Merric is reclassed to Bishop, he can gain D staves, but further increases will take significant time. Other units, like Caeda, are strong competition for Master Seals due to how significant their promotions are, while promoting Merric does not provide him with any significant benefits.
Additionally, Excalibur is no longer Merric's personal tome; any unit can use it with B level tomes, though Merric can use it at any level. Wendell joins soon after Merric and overshadows him with superior weapon ranks, a very high speed base, and promoted stats. Wendell can use Excalibur at base level, and will generally deal more damage. Wendell also starts with a higher staff level than Merric would have after promotion, and can reach C staves much faster, further eclipsing Merric. If Wendell is reclassed, Merric will likely be the only other unit capable of using Excalibur; however, the existence of another early-joining unit who can use his powerful tome severely undermines his usefulness.
Merric's best use is as a long-term investment. His biggest advantage is that his growths are all good and his average stats in the endgame will blow most pre-promoted magic users out of the water. Assuming he receives all five Spirit Dusts and reaches A-rank in tomes, Merric needs to grow Magic eight times over the course of the game to guarantee one-shotting enemy fliers in the Endgame with Excalibur, which he will reach on average at level 20/3 or 10/16 - a feasible goal if he is fed kills at a decent pace. His biggest competition for this role is Etzel, who comes in with 11 base Magic and only needs to grow it once over the course of the game to reach the same benchmark; training both is not feasible since there's only really enough Spirit Dusts for one. In addition, Etzel's lack of availability can be compensated for through the use of Wendell, whose combat falls off right before Etzel joins. However, Merric is still significantly faster, allowing him to do better against non-flier enemies, and of course there's the obvious advantage of not needing to butcher two thirds of the player's army in order to use him. Ultimately, Merric requires a lot of love to make work, but he can pull his weight throughout the game if the player chooses to use him.
Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
Role
In New Mystery of the Emblem, Merric takes on the same role that he did in Mystery of the Emblem's second book, though expanded. Merric now takes part in the newly-added prologue chapters, being a usable character from Prologue 5 onward. He comes equipped with a Fire tome instead of his usual Excalibur, and assists when bandits attack a nearby village.
After the Prologue is finished, Merric returns to Khadein. He is not seen again until Chapter Ten, wherein Arlen once again is attempting to kill him for seemingly betraying Khadein and siding with Altea. Merric tries to explain that he had no intention of succeeding Wendell as Arlen feared, but Arlen nonetheless attacks him. Merric is also once again needed to recruit Elice in the final chapter.
Merric also appears in the downloadable mission Wind and Thunder. Merric, Arlen, Etzel, and Linde head to the deserts surrounding Khadein in order to investigate rumors of dark rituals being performed relating to Gharnef.
With the newly-added support conversations, Merric can have conversations with both Kris and Linde.
As with a number of other characters in New Mystery of the Emblem, there is a unique weapon named for Merric available through Everyone's Conditions: Merric's Tome.

Personality
Merric was a frail child growing up, and due to coming from a family of prestigious knights, he was a bit of an outcast. Being a noble, he was able to become friends with Marth and Elice at a young age. Due to his frailty, Elice would often need to heal him, leading to his infatuation with her. Eventually, wishing to return the favor to Marth and Elice for being so kind to him, Merric followed his dream of studying magic and left Altea for Khadein.
Merric is a kindhearted and studious character with a deep love for the study of magic. In his conversation with Linde in Shadow Dragon, he claims to view their shared status as Mages in high regard, as they would have little trouble taking care of themselves. Additionally, according to his support conversations with Linde in New Mystery of the Emblem, he also wrote a thesis about the nature of magic, further showcasing his love for the subject and his general scholarship. However, despite loving the study of magic, Merric's loyalty still belongs to the Altean royal family, as he has no intention of succeeding Wendell, leaving the position open for Arlen instead.
Being a kind individual, Merric greatly values his friends. In Marth and Linde's support conversation in Fire Emblem Warriors, Linde tells Marth that Merric enthusiastically praises him whenever they talk, and Marth, slightly embarrassed, says that he also speaks highly of Linde when they're alone. Merric also views Arlen as a friend even after he makes an attempt on Merric's life, to Arlen's chagrin. Merric's kindness is also noted by Elice, who laughs at the thought of Merric taking down hordes of enemies to protect her, saying that he is far too kind to do something like that, and that she prefers it that way.
Merric is also deeply in love with Elice, and has been since they were both young. She, alongside Marth, had encouraged him to follow his dreams and become a Mage, and he grew to love her for it. When the War of Shadows breaks out and Elice is captured, Merric seeks out Marth, joining his childhood friend in avenging Altea and saving Elice. During the War of Heroes when she is once again captured, Merric takes the abduction to heart, blaming himself for failing to protect her once again. During the final chapter, he tries to break through to her, despairing over the fact that he felt her abduction and mind control was his fault. His love for her helps her come to her senses and break through Medeus's control. Hearing Merric's declaration of love, she embraces him, leaving him overjoyed, though he quickly becomes flustered when he realizes others are watching.
In the epilogue of New Mystery, Merric teaches at the magic academy that Elice started after the War of Heroes, after the two had fallen in love. His students came to love him for his kindhearted and patient nature.
