“ | And now I can work to help bring about peace. That makes me so happy. | ” | — Charlot |
---|
Charlot (Japanese: シャルロー Sharlow) is the adoptive son of the Thracian general Hannibal and the brother of the dancer Laylea. Trained as a priest of the Church of Bragi, he influenced Hannibal to defect and ally with Seliph's liberation army.
Charlot is Coirpre's substitute character, filling his role in the story and gameplay if Silvia died or failed to be married in the course of the first generation.
Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
Role
When Seliph's liberation army seized Meath with the intent of claiming the rest of Thracia, Charlot was held hostage by King Travant in a bid to get Hannibal to co-operate with his orders to fight Seliph, and was left under the guard of General Distler at Luthecia Castle. When Seliph conquered Luthecia, Charlot was freed and warned Seliph of Hannibal's plight. He joined Seliph's army and convinced Hannibal to stand down and accompany him.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Charlot joins as a level 1 Priest in Chapter 9; he Replaces Coirpre if Silvia was not married or died by the end of Chapter 5. Chalot is very under-leveled for a unit that joins so late; however, Charlot has the Paragon skill, doubling his experience gain, allowing him to reach level 20 and promote to High Priest sooner. Staves such as Warp or Return grant large amounts of experience, boosted further by Paragon; if Charlot is left at the home castle with another unit and repeatedly uses Warp or Return to send them to the home castle, Charlot can reach level 20 within one chapter. Upon promotion, his B rank in staves improves to A, and he gains C-rank in fire, thunder and wind magic. However, as Charlot has low HP and defense, relatively low speed, and lacks Follow-Up, he has weak combat and is only sporadically useful for it.
Charlot is unmounted, and does not get a mount upon promotion; the large maps of Genealogy of the Holy War strongly favor mounted units. Additionally, Charlot has 5 movement—less than most other infantry's 6—even after promotion, and will fall behind most units; Charlot joins close to the front line in Chapter 9, but will fall behind in the chapters after. Charlot's low move limits his ability to use Rescue to boost mobility, as most units could simply be ahead of him, and he will often fall to far behind to reach allies with Physic or Fortify. Every other staff-user but Lana has higher movement, especially Nanna, Leif, and Fee, who are mounted.
While Coirpre has the advantage of inheritance, Charlot has the advantage of Paragon. Coirpre will always inherit Adept and Miracle from Silvia, and can inherit other skills as well as staves from his father. On the other hand, Charlot is required to get the only Berserk staff available to the player; if Charlot waits next to Hannibal in Chapter 9, he will receive Berserk. The Berserk staff has several niche uses in the second generation, such as berserking Arion in Chapter 9 or a number of bosses in Endgame to fight their subordinates, making it easier for the player to defeat them. However, Berserk has only a single use and costs 30,000 gold to repair, which Charlot will struggle to obtain without assistance from a Thief or lover. Additionally, choosing to obtain Charlot over Coirpre requires choosing Laylea over Lene; while Laylea has Charm as a skill—which Lene cannot get—Lene has inheritance, allowing her access to a wider variety of skills and weapons and easier access to the Leg and Knight Rings.
