“ | If I care what becomes of Grust, then I cannot continue to stand by Dolhr. | ” | — Lorenz, to Marth |
---|
Lorenz (Japanese: ロレンス Rolence) was a general in the service of Grust. A close friend of Mostyn, he assisted him in the formation of the Kingdom of Talys. In the War of Shadows, he unsuccessfully attempted to persuade King Ludwik from allying with Dolhr, and in his devotion to his country resigned himself to following Grust's course in its alliance with Dolhr and its domination of the world. When the Archanean League came to Grust, Lorenz and Camus were the commanders of the country's defence, and Lorenz was convinced by Caeda, Mostyn's daughter, to ally with Marth for the good of Grust.
When King Ludwik died some time after the war's end, Lorenz was appointed the regent to the young Prince Jubelo. However, the Archanean forces occupying Grust were handed over to the command of Lang, and under him they began abusing the people of Grust. In response, Lorenz and the Grust army attempted to resist the Archanean hold on Grust, without success. By the time Marth, on deployment to Grust on Hardin's request, reached Lorenz he was already dying of wounds sustained in earlier battles, with his forces since wiped out.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
Role
Along with Camus, Lorenz led the forces of Grust in defense of the country in the closing days of the War of Shadows and with Marth's army impending, with Lorenz personally guarding the Grusthold. He was approached by Caeda, who reminded him that the interests of a king are not always in the interests of the country, and that to join Marth's army would be to preserve Grust's future. Impressed and amused by Caeda's "mad logic", Lorenz allied with Marth's forces.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lorenz joins in Chapter 20 as the only playable General in the game, his joining chapter is the best place where he can offer much utility. In Chapter 20, Lorenz starts near the castle Camus stands on—also where many of the enemies are—and near the bridge where reinforcements will cross. Because of this, he can do two things that may be very useful: either choke the point where reinforcements cross, effectively preventing them from being a threat, or dealing with the enemies near where he starts.
His high defense and relatively high HP means he is very unlikely to die from any of the enemies, and his solid strength of 11 and the Silver Sword he comes with means he has decent offense. His low speed means he can't double Sword using enemies, bar other enemy Generals, but he still does decent damage to them, and he can also be useful for taking on Camus.
After that point, however, his weaknesses become apparent. His low movement isn't much of a problem in Chapter 20 since he starts close to where he needs to be, but in the subsequent chapters it severely holds him back. His low speed also severely hampers his combat potential, as he will won't be able to double most sword or light tome wielding enemies without the usage of a Speed Ring. His weapon level is high enough to use all of the swords available to him, but he cannot use Mercurius as the weapon is locked to Marth in the game.
Lorenz has the ability to immediately use the Wyrmslayer and he can double the Manaketes of Chapter 24 with his base stats. His movement can be improved with the infinite Boots from the secret shop, also in Chapter 24, but if the player is low on gold and lacks a Silver Card, it would be better served on a stronger unit — having one unit with 14 movement grants more flexibility and opens more options than another unit with 9. On a whole, Lorenz serves as a replacement unit if the player's army is lacking in a physical powerhouse, but he won't be better than a leveled Dracoknight or Paladin if one is available as they will have superior speed, movement and access to the Gradivus.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lorenz's stats have been slightly improved in comparison to the first game. Whilst Lorenz can no longer use swords, he has gained the usage of Lances, on one hand, this means Lorenz will be unlikely to be double most units given that lances weigh significantly more than swords, on the otherhand, this now means Lorenz now has access to Gradivus and can use it at his base level.
The introduction of Dismount during the indoor chapters, means Lorenz's low movement is less of an issue during those chapters, as he will no longer have to compete with mounted units as he moves around the map. The dismount feature, also means armored units maintain exclusive usage of lances, including Gradivus during the indoor chapters. Due to his high base stats, Lorenz is considered to be a good unit to deploy in the final chapter and can contribute even in low growth runs.
Book 2
Role
Lorenz's resistance against the Archanean oppression under Lang had failed, and by the time Marth arrived, all that remained was a wounded Lorenz alone occupying a single fort, protecting the young Jubelo and Yuliya. As Marth's forces drew near, Lorenz ordered Ogma – dispatched to him by Mostyn – to take the two away, but they refused, so Ogma left alone to prepare to seek revenge for Lorenz's imminent loss. When Marth approached Lorenz, he entrusted Marth with the fates of the two royal children, then killed himself before he died of his grave wounds.

In Shadow Dragon, he is moved onto the throne, and Camus is put in his former spot. This was possibly to make the chapter easier, as Camus is able to be bypassed, or to make killing him optional.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lorenz joins the army in Chapter 20 of Shadow Dragon as a level 5 pre-promoted General. His growths are decent for a pre-promote. His base stats are exceedingly low for his join time, and despite his defense being high, most of it comes from the General class; he only has a personal defense base of 2, and none of his personal bases exceed 3, except for HP. For that reason, even when reclassed, Lorenz will have poor stats.
Lorenz's base weapon ranks are high; A rank in lances allows him to use every lance in the game with no investment, and B rank in bows allows him to use most bows. However, he struggles to make use of both, as General has low movement and he will get doubled by every enemy he faces. Additionally, when he joins, the player will have access to many other units with a good lance rank, making Lorenz less unique. Because his base stats are so terrible, and his reclass potential is nonexistent, Lorenz is difficult to justify deploying over most other units.
