Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Wendell can be recruited in Chapter 5 as the first playable member of the Bishop class. He distinguishes himself early on as one of the strongest units and stays so for the duration of the game. His class allows him to use both tomes and staves, and his weapon level is high enough to use every one of both in the game. He can offer huge utility in strong healing with Physic, use of the Warp staff, and powerful tomes that take advantage of the low resistance of most enemies. He has a high speed of 14 which allows him to double all but the fastest of enemies. He can also attack at 1-2 range with his tomes, allowing him to avoid damage and counterattack most enemies on enemy phase. His low strength and skill do not affect him since those do not factor into magic damage or magic accuracy. His defense is not great but it is decent with a base of 8, and since he usually does not get doubled, he can survive multiple rounds of combat so long as he is not fighting multiple strong enemies. Thankfully, enemies will instead prioritize Marth, which can be used to Wendell's advantage to avoid damage on enemy phase. The only thing holding him back is his somewhat disappointing 6 movement, but that is somewhat mitigated by his ability to heal anywhere on the map and his ability to attack at 2-range. Overall, his tremendous utility and excellent advantages make him one of the best units in the game and he is well worth deploying.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Wendell joins in Chapter 5 of Shadow Dragon as a Sage. This makes him one of very few units with access to promoted classes early in the game. His base stats are very low, except for speed—Wendell has one of the highest personal speed bases in the game. He can be an effective Dracoknight, for instance, and he will have 21 speed as a Swordmaster. Most enemies cannot double Wendell even on higher difficulties, helping him survive. The rest of his bases are more impressive in practice than on paper. 27 physical bulk and 4 Magic allow him to survive a single hit from an enemy Dracoknight, one-shot in retaliation with Excalibur, and avoid being doubled if he whiffs his counterattack all the way through Chapter 15. If he gets two more points of attack, either from reaching A-rank in tomes or tripping his 20% Magic growth once or twice, he can one-shot fliers in Chapter 16, the last map to feature fliers before Etzel joins.

Wendell's base weapon ranks are very impressive as well. With a B-rank in tomes as a Sage, he can use Excalibur - and better than Merric, thanks to his speed advantage. Excalibur is a useful tome thanks to its effectiveness against flying units. Wendell's D-rank in staves is not high enough to use the Warp staff, but this is easy to fix. Reclassing him to Bishop gives him 30 weapon experience in staves. From there, he only needs to use a staff eight times to reach C-rank, at which point he can contribute as a support unit. He will have access to the Warp staff, a useful mobility tool; and to the Physic staff, a long-range healing tool. He will be able to use other staves as well, including Barrier. Wendell's combat utility tends to fall off after Chapter 15, but by this point he will have likely built up a solid staff rank and can pivot to being a healer for the rest of the game. The game's most useful staves, such as Recover and Warp, do not scale off of Magic, meaning Wendell's utility will not be hindered by his Magic failing to keep up.

Thanks to his flexibility and high availability, Wendell is among the best units in the game. Even Jagen, one of the best earlygame units, cannot match Wendell's utility.

Personality

Wendell has no love for the wars that go on in Archanea, he wishes for magic to be used not for violence. But despite that, he is willing to go to many lengths so that these wars can meet a positive conclusion. His brave nature is backed up by much confidence. When recruited into Marth's army during the War of Shadows, he seemingly doesn't take the prince too seriously, not even referring to him by name while also putting some emphasis on himself when Merric recruits him.[1] Perhaps this was a result of him being one Gotoh's students: both don't want to use magic for violence, and to fulfill their masters' wishes. Gotoh is Wendell's, and Naga is Gotoh's.

Wendell is also a fatherly figure to his pupils. Despite Arlen's grudges against Wendell for giving Excalibur to Merric over him, Wendell is still someone Arlen respects, and is the only one who can talk some reason into him when he starts to fight with Merric. He was also Jubelo and Yuliya's guardian for a spell and is the sole reason they survived captivity after Gharnef held them as hostages.[2] He's even shown to be playful at times, like how he teases Merric.[3]

Trivia

  • Discounting the multiplayer mode, Wendell is the only enemy Sage in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon; the class never appears in the arena.
  • In the Japanese version of Shadow Dragon, Wendell has no base staff rank, but has slightly more base tome rank. If reclassed into Bishop, his tome rank is exactly B, meaning perhaps him being a Sage instead of a Bishop was a change by the developers later. In the other versions, Wendell has exactly B rank tomes and D rank staves as a Sage.
  • Wendell and Boah's Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light artworks appear to often be confused with one another. In Memorial Book Akaneia Chronicle, the blue Bishop artwork is labeled as "Wendell", but as "Boah" in Legacy of Archanea.
