Appearance(s)

You're Prince Marth? I'm Beck, a soldier of Deil. I escaped from the fighting and hid here. I'm willing to fight for you. With this Thunderbolt, I'll fight!
— Beck, to Marth

Beck (Japanese: ベック Beck) is a ballistician who appears in Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light, Shadow Dragon, and New Mystery of the Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow.

After the War of Shadows, the fruit used to lubricate ballistae went extinct, so in New Mystery of the Emblem, Beck is instead a horseman and has a horse named Bonnie (Japanese: ボニー Bonnie).

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Beck is a member of a very unique class, the Ballistician, that comes with some positives. Some of their weapons deal bonus damage to certain enemy types—specifically, the Thunderbolt, which Beck has in his inventory, that deals bonus damage to enemy ballisticians, and the Arrowspate, which deals bonus damage to flying units. Beck's availability is not terrible, as he joins halfway through the game. Also, his base weapon level is high enough to use every ballista. Lastly, his base defense of 14 makes him good at tanking damage. Unfortunately, these strengths pale in comparison to the crippling flaws Beck has. His horribly low speed in conjunction with the relatively high weight of ballistae means he will get doubled by practically any enemy he can come up against; his terrible skill means that his accuracy will be pitiful; he has a hard time contributing damage on enemy phase due to being locked to 2-range; his most damning flaw, however, is his absolutely abysmal movement of 4, tied with Jake—another Ballistician—for the lowest in the game. In order for Beck to contribute to your team you will have to slow your other units to a crawl, which is very impractical because often enemy reinforcements will continuously spawn if you take too long on a map. The only way to make him viable is to give him the Boots, but even with that he will still be a mediocre unit, and the Boots are better off being used on a unit that could contribute more to your team, Marth in particular makes great use of them, considering he is the only unit that can seize or visit villages. Beck should only be used if you let almost all of your units die and you need someone to fill a deployment slot, otherwise, avoid at all cost.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Beck is the second and last Ballistician to join, and he is able to contribute immediately by using his Thunderbolt to pick off the enemy ballisticians in Chapter 13. Beyond that, he is almost identical to the other ballistician Jake, boasting better base stats but slightly lower growths. Like Jake, his ability to attack up to ten spaces away makes him useful in many situations. He can bring down far-away flying units with the Arrowspate, and use the reliable Hoistflamme or the powerful Pachyderm to deal chip damage to dangerous promoted enemies with absolutely no risk of counterattack. His stats are almost meaningless, so he requires no training and can be deployed and undeployed as needed without hurting his viability. His only disadvantages are his inability to counterattack and the worst mobility in the game. Beck pairs well with Jake or a shifted Xane, as they can trade forged ballistae back and forth to increase their damage output.
