Xane (Japanese: チェイニーCheine) is an ArchaneanManakete and the only character in the Fire Emblem series of the Freelancer class. Initially, he claims to be from a far away land, and that all of his kin can transform as he does, though no other Manakete is shown to have his ability to transform into other people, though it may have something to do with him discarding his dragonstone.
Xane is met in Chapter 16, where he is being held captive by the Dolhr army for his ability to shape shift with the intention of forcing him into service. If spoken to with Marth, he will instead join the Altean army, serving through the remainder of the War of Shadows.

Xane's class—Freelancer—allows him to copy the class and stats of another unit, though not their inventory. Xane is more or less as good as whatever unit you choose to imitate. Ultimately, you can't go wrong with a second version of one of your best units, which makes Xane an excellent unit who is always useful. There is, however, a necessary caveat to his usefulness in faster clears: because transforming takes a turn, Xane will be unable to contribute to much on turn 1; as such, Xane may be incredibly useful for two-turn clears, but will be inferior to a unit slightly less strong than your best or an additional Curate or Bishop capable of using Warp for one-turns.
Xane appears in Chapter 16 as an enemy unit, though he is not aggressive. He was captured by Dolhr and forced to work in their service, though he states he had no intention to waste his talents on such a country. After he is freed from his cell and Marth speaks to him, Xane accompanies Marth for the rest of the war.
Xane was first made available to be summoned by players on October 8, 2020 in a special Halloween variation as part of the summoning event surrounding the Dragons Harvest update. The aforementioned Halloween variation of Xane is the only one currently available in Heroes, based on his Mystery of the Emblem incarnation. Xane is one of a rare number of characters to have been made available only as a special variation without a normal variation of them available (no files at all exist in the game for their regular versions).
↑"Hey Altean prince. Thanks to you I'm free. I'm Xane and I come from a faraway land. I can transform into anyone, because of this Dolhr forced me to join them but I didn't want to. I'd rather join and help you!" — Xane to Marth, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light
↑"When Dolhr caught on, they started threatenin’ me. Told me to join their army or “face my doom.” Hah! Well, I wasn’t about to waste my considerable talent on those evil coots! You, on the other hand...You’ve got character." — Xane, to Marth, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
