Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
With unparalleled utility and the potential to also reach respectable combat performance with some investment, Hortensia has the makings of a top-tier unit. Her skill in staves is unmatched; she has extended range with healing staves but more importantly is one of the few units who can use Rescue and Warp without being stuck in a clunky 5-movement class, and the only unit who can extend the service life of these precious staves. In practice she will more than double their uses, as she can easily reach 40+ Dex and the results can be further manipulated with the Time Crystal.
In addition to being great with staves, Hortensia can deal respectable damage with tomes, as she's fast enough to double most targets, and since it makes sense to stack Dex on her, with a crit-engraved weapon she'll likely crit on one of the two attacks, destroying the target. While better damage dealers such as Anna don't need to crit to one-round, Hortensia's damage is impressive for a unit who already had best-in-game utility.
Hortensia's very low HP and Def make her initially incapable of surviving a round of combat, which should be addressed to allow her to position herself freely for optimal staff use (or combat). With the Sleipnir Rider's low Def cap, Hortensia is a poor target for Draconic Shields, but she can absorb up to two Angelic Robes with no risk of overcapping (at least not by the full 5HP that would completely waste the second robe). By the time Hortensia joins, the player will have obtained three robes; saving two for Hortensia can be considered, as it will free her to equip Dex boosts in her Emblem and second (after Tiki's blessing) skill slot. If the player can't spare the robes, Hortensia will need to hold an ultra-defensive emblem, or play very cautiously until she can inherit both Tiki's blessing and a noticeable HP boost from Corrin. Of course, she will always appreciate an extra HP tonic. In any case, Hortensia offers so much that any resources spent on boosting her durability are very well spent.
Unlike most units with unique classes, Hortensia will likely want to stay in hers for the entire game, as the class skill is just too good to be shelved even temporarily, and Hortensia's base growths would make her fall behind in stats without the Sleipnir Rider's excellent boosts to Mag/Dex/Spd rates.
Personality
Hortensia is innocent and somewhat selfish, but she cares for her family and relatives.[1]

” | — Hortensia against Ivy in Chapter 14 |

“ | Corrupted Hyacinth: Hortensia. Hortensia: Father! I've missed you. I wanted to see you so badly. I've been so sad since you died... Corrupted Hyacinth: Then, dear daughter, follow me. Kill your friends and bring me their rings. Hortensia: No, I won't. I want to live up to my father, the wise king of Elusia... My real father. Before the Fell Dragon ruined him. Corrupted Hyacinth: Rrgh... Hortensia: Goodbye, Father. I'm sad we didn't have more time together. I love you. Soon this will all be over, OK? Soon you'll be able to rest. |
” | — Hortensia against Corrupted Hyacinth in Chapter 17 |
---|
“ | No more sadness, Divine One. I'm tired of it! Let's get everyone through this. I believe in you! | ” | — Hortensia in The Last Engage. |
---|
“ | Hortensia: I've gotta say it feels a little weird to fight someone who's supposed to be an ally. Byleth: Just because we're fighting doesn't make us enemies. Not this time. We're still friends. But for now, prepare for battle. Hortensia: OK. I've got no choice but to fight? Let's do it. |
” | — Hortensia against Byleth in The Instructor. |

“ | Corrupted Ivy: Well, if it isn't the good-for-nothing second princess. The sight of you makes me sick. Hortensia: Ivy? What's gotten into you? Corrupted Ivy: Don't you "Ivy" me. You've got no right to be so familiar. I've warned you countless times. If you're plan was to collude with Solm to get my attention, congratulations. You've succeeded. Hortensia: This is how you always talk to the Hortensia of this world, isn't it? Then I'm glad you said all that to me. Because for once, at least, she won't have to hear it! |
” | — Hortensia against Corrupted Ivy in Fell Xenologue 4. |
---|
“ | You're an enemy, aren't you? In that case... | ” | — Corrupted Hortensia in Fell Xenologue 5. |
---|
“ | Corrupted Hortensia: Are you... me? If so, please don't get in my way. I need to collect the bracelets to bring Father back to life. Hortensia: I know what you're going through. I've been through the same. But I can't let you do that. So, I guess we have no choice but to square off, cutie versus cutie. May the most adorable win! Come on, that deserved a laugh. If we've got to fight, we can at least try to make it fun. Corrupted Hortensia: You might think we're cute, but Ivy told me the truth. We're the most miserable wretches alive. |
” | — Hortensia against Corrupted Hortensia in Fell Xenologue 5. |
---|
“ | Corrupted Hortensia: Goldmary...I hardly recognized you. Goldmary:Understandable. My elegance is too scintillating to be captured fully in memory. Corrupted Hortensia: No, I'm surprised you have any elegance at all. You were always so withdrawn. You had no confidence, no charisma... Goldmary: Heh. There must be some mistake. That's impossible. Surely you're thinking of someone else. Corrupted Hortensia: Our whole group was like that. We never wanted to draw attention to ourselves. It was easier to survive that way... or so we thought. If only you'd been as poised and graceful then as you are now. I'd have looked up to you... |
” | — Corrupted Hortensia against Goldmary in Fell Xenologue 5. |
---|
“ | Rosado: Hello, Hortensia. I see you're just as adorable in this world - if a bit less confident. Corrupted Hortensia: Rosado, back from the dead... I can hardly believe my eyes. I missed you so much. There's been nothing but despair in my heart since I lost my retainers. You stayed behind so I could escape the corrupted. I never got the chance to thank you. But the truth is... I think I'd have been happier dying alongside you then. Rosado: You suffered so much. I'm glad your Rosado was able to protect you. I'm sorry he can't be with you now. The best I can do is send you to him. |
” | — Corrupted Hortensia against Rosado in Fell Xenologue 5. |
---|
“ | Corrupted Hortensia: Ah! Ivy! I mean, Your Majesty, my queen... Have you finally come to execute me, like all of Father's other illegitimate children? Ivy: Hortensia... What has the Ivy of this world done to you? Corrupted Hortensia: You are here to kill me. I can tell. I'm sorry, but I can't just accept death. I have to fight. |
” | — Corrupted Hortensia against Ivy in Fell Xenologue 5. |
---|
“ | Corrupted Hortensia: Lindon... It's been a long time. Lindon: So, the Princess Hortensia of this world is quite a serious one. Even if we're enemies, that doesn't feel right. Here, why not try one of these sweets I made? They're very cute, if I do say so myself. Corrupted Hortensia: No, thanks. Cute things don't really suit me... |
” | — Corrupted Hortensia against Lindon in Fell Xenologue 5. |
---|
“ | Corrupted Hortensia: Divine One... Did they bring you back to life, just like me?" Alear:Not exactly. Wait, does that mean you know you're one of the Corrupted? Corrupted Hortensia: I was supposed to have died in Elusia. But as you can see, I'm still here. If you've been brought back too, then maybe I can see all the people I care about again. You're on my side, right, Divine One? You have to be. So why are you standing in my way? |
” | — Corrupted Hortensia against Alear in Fell Xenologue 6. |
