— Mist, to Boyd

Mist (Japanese: ミスト Mist) is a main character throughout Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. She is Ike's younger sister and is one of the few individuals that can touch Lehran's Medallion without being possessed by its power. She is about the same age as Rolf, and they both join in Chapter 9 of Path of Radiance. She starts as a Cleric and is the only playable character of this class in both games. She can only use staves as a cleric in Path of Radiance, but she can use swords as a cleric in its sequel.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Role

In the beginning of Path of Radiance, Mist merely supports Ike. She and Rolf officially become playable in Chapter 9. Even after this, however, Mist continues to support her brother and the Greil Mercenaries while they fight against Daein. She also carries Lehran's Medallion during the game and is very upset when it is stolen. Mist often hums a song that was used as a lullaby for her and Ike when their mother Elena was still alive, that also turns out to be a heron melody known as the Galdr of Release.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Mist is the second healer available and joins very underleveled at level 1 with low base stats. While having a second healer can be valuable, her magic, skill, and resistance are inferior to Rhys at base, with only 4 base magic compared to his 8 base magic, which is likely higher by the time she joins. She also starts with E-level staves as opposed to Rhys's D-level, so she cannot immediately use Mend staves to compensate. Because she is a healer, her experience gain is extremely low without bonus experience, making it difficult to level her. Thus, if one wants to use her at all, she requires significant BEXP investment.

However, she is one of the units that benefits most from an early Master Seal promotion. When promoted, she gains a mount, giving her a massive boost in movement and Canto, and also a significant +4 magic bonus. This makes her the only mounted healer through the majority of the game. Her staff utility becomes unmatched with her good magic growth, as well. She can also use swords, though her strength is too terrible to use physical swords well. While magic swords turn her into an excellent offensive unit, her sword level is initially too low to use them; if the player wishes to turn her into an offensive Valkyrie, Arms Scrolls can be used. She's the only character alongside Ike that is present during the Black Knight boss battle at the end of Chapter 27, where she can help her brother by healing him on player phase when he's in danger. Without her help, he will be forced to use Vulneraries and other healing items if he is at low HP, and that will cause him to end his turn, which can greatly hinder him in defeating the Black Knight in the 5-turn limit.

Mist starts with the Miracle skill, which, while unreliable, Mist makes good use of due to her excellent luck growth and bad durability. Shade can also boost her survival rate, though it is again unreliable.

Mist has a water affinity, which gives both attack and defense. While Mist herself does not benefit much from these boosts, many of her partners gain great benefit from these boosts. Partnering with Titania and Jill gives both units a +3 defense boost at max support, and Mist will have close movement to them once she promotes, making them decent partners. Partnering with Boyd gives him a solid +3 attack and +1 defense boost at max support, though the attack boost may be overkill for him. Partnering with Mordecai gives both units a double water affinity boost, with a significant +3 attack and defense; unfortunately this support pairing is held back by Mordecai's late transformation.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Role

Mist does not have much of a role in Radiant Dawn until later in Part III when she faints due to the effects of Lehran's Medallion. After Yune is released from the medallion, she decides to talk to Mist because of her balance of chaos and order.

If a Radiant Dawn game was started via a data transfer from Path of Radiance and Mist managed to reach level 20 in her highest possible class in the Path of Radiance save file, any stat Mist capped in Path of Radiance will result in a boost to her base in the stat in question in Radiant Dawn. The boost is a +5 for max HP, and +2 for strength, magic, skill, speed, luck, defense or resistance. In addition, Mist's weapon level at the end of a transferred Path of Radiance game can result in an boost to her weapon experience in Radiant Dawn. See Data transfer § Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn for more information.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Mist is one of two healers in Ike's group in Part III. Her base Magic and Resistance are noticeably lower than Rhys's (her stats being 10 and 8 points lower than him), most of her other stats are either on par or lower than his except for her slightly higher HP and Speed and better Movement. Her Staff Rank is at B, which is good, but Rhys has an A rank in Staves at base, making her an immediate inferior healer. Being a healer, she also has very poor physical durability and is prone to getting double attacked when not used carefully. However, having a second weaker healer through the majority of Part III can still be useful, making her valuable when Rhys is too far away to heal other units. Unlike other Clerics in the series, she can use swords at base and has her own weapon, the Florete, which is a lightweight and respectably accurate 1-2 Range sword with solid might and a high additional Crit chance of 15%, the third highest of any sword in the game, but her strength and speed base are too low to accomplish much with it, especially with the former stat and the fact that it does not count as a magic sword, despite of the game's description.

Her Magic growth is decent, but still not high enough to compensate for her poor base Magic. While her Skill and Speed growths are good, her bases in them are only average at best and there are no Magic swords available for her to use, so her offenses will always be limited outside of attacking mages, who generally are not as problematic for her as other enemies due to her good Resistance. Promoting to a Valkyrie notably increases her utility, giving her a mount, good bonus stats, Canto and more Movement thanks to her new horse, thus making her a mounted staff-user, unlike both Rhys and Laura, but the game overall is less kind to units on horses, and she cannot promote early without the Holy Crown (available in Chapter 4-2), although this may be redundant and not that beneficial, as she may promote before she even gets it and will have a lower luck cap when promoted. She learns Sol upon promotion, but her lack of Strength means that her damage and self-healing will be seriously limited, and thus it will not help her as much as it should. She is forced onto Ike's team in Part IV, which is fortunate since his team is the least impactful of the three teams for horse units, as his team is in an indoors chapter, while Micaiah's is in a desert chapter and Tibarn's is in a swamp.

Mist starts with the Miracle skill, which, given her high Luck base and growth, works well for her due to her terrible physical durability. As her offense is limited, only defensive or utility skills should be used on her such as Miracle or Shade.

Mist has the very useful Water Affinity, giving both Attack and Defense. While they will not make much of a difference to her, it will benefit her support partners well. She is small enough to be easily rescued by almost any unit, which builds supports very quickly; in particular, having Titania or Haar rescue Mist with Savior gives them nice and fast support benefits, then when promoted, she can keep up with them. Mia and Boyd both have Fire Affinities, so they gain a respectable +3 Attack bonus with a light Defense bonus at max support with Mist, and also have similar move before her promotion.

Fire Emblem Awakening

Mist is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Path of Radiance character set. Mist is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Smash Brethren DLC series; additionally, Mist appears as an ally in Smash Brethren 2.

— Mist's normal escape quote in Path of Radiance.
I'm so sorry, Ike. I'm of no help at all...
— Mist's escape quote in part 2 of Chapter 27 of Path of Radiance.
Muarim: What? No, not another child...
Mist: ...
Muarim: Stop! Your sword hand, it's trembling! ...Please! Don't do this!
Mist: ...No...I will not be the only one who runs away!

— Mist, when fighting Muarim in Chapter 15 of Path of Radiance.
Mist: That's enough, Shinon! Why must friends fight? It's all too terrible...
Shinon: This is war. It's all terrible. Tears mean nothing in the heat of battle. Remember that.

— Mist, when fighting Shinon in Chapter 18 of Path of Radiance.
Mist: Y-you... You're one of the dragon tribe, aren't you? When we ran into trouble in the southern sea, the dragon prince rescued us! I don't want to fight you! D-do I...have to?
Ena: You have met Prince Kurthnaga? I've no desire to steal the life of one who received his aid.
Mist: Whoo-hooo!
Ena: Ah, forgive me, little one. For even so... I cannot quit fighting.

— Mist, when fighting Ena in Chapter 21 of Path of Radiance.
Mist: ...Sniff...sniff...
Black Knight: Do you tremble in fear, little daughter of Gawain? How...entertaining. But if you value your life, you will leave this place at once.
Mist: You...you took my brother and my father! My sword may not even scratch you, but I don't care. This one blow... will contain... all my anger...and all my pain...Rrrraaaaa! I'll kill you!

— Mist, when fighting the Black Knight in Part 2 of Chapter 27 of Path of Radiance.
Mist: As long as you're alive, this war can not end. How many lives have you stolen with your selfishness?
Ashnard: You ask that of me? You? A girl? Pah! Trivial. You're not worth the effort it would take to kill you.
Mist: Give me back my medallion! You aren't supposed to have it!
Ashnard: Are you...Gawain's daughter?
Mist: I am! And like my father and mother before me, I will protect the world from your madness!

— Mist, when fighting Ashnard in the Endgame of Path of Radiance.
I'll go on ahead, Brother. You'd better hurry! We'll be waiting! Forgive me, Ike. I wasn't able to help...
— Mist's escape quote in Radiant Dawn.
Mist: Jill! Why? Why are you doing this?!
Jill: I'm sorry, Mist. There's no way we can turn back now.
Mist: But, Jill...
Jill: Mist...run. I won't be expected to kill you if you just turn and run!

— Mist, when fighting Jill in Part III, Chapter 13 of Radiant Dawn.
Mist: Jill! Wait! Listen to what I have to say!
Jill: Mist. I don't think there's anything for us to talk about. We're soldiers. Let's leave it at that.
Mist: But, Jill...
Jill: Come on, Mist. I'm going to fight, so you'll want to defend yourself.

— Mist, when fighting Jill in Part III, Endgame of Radiant Dawn.
I'm Mist. Ike's sister.
— Mist's SpotPass parley quote in Awakening.
I'd rather not come to blows...
— Mist, in a SpotPass battle in Awakening.
Let's go teach those bad guys!
— Mist's SpotPass recruitment quote in Awakening.
Please! Leave this place!
— Mist, in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Mist: Please! Leave this place!
Lissa: Hey, you want to gripe? Gripe to my brother.

— Mist, when fighting Lissa in Smash Brethren 1 in Awakening.
Can we please stop this? Just go back to wherever it is you came from.
— Mist, in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.
Lissa: Would you stop running amok?! We can't go home until you stop fighting.
Mist: That's your problem! This battle would be over if you hadn't come here!

— Mist, when fighting Lissa in Smash Brethren 3 in Awakening.

— Mist, between Chapters 18 and 28 in Path of Radiance.

There’s a delicate flower blossoming among the hardened warriors of the Greil Mercenaries… Yes, it’s Mist, the beloved daughter of Greil himself! Mist once worked behind the scenes of the Greil Mercenaries, helping the group out with day-to-day essentials. But when war came to Crimea, she found herself swept up in the fighting. Mist always hated conflict, but she did her best to keep her brother Ike safe, with the medallion left by her mother and her healing staff in hand. She doesn’t only look out for her allies, either—she’s caring and considerate toward her adversaries as well. I’m sure that there’s all sorts of people out there just waiting for someone as kind as her to reach out!
