Oh ho! So clever... Let's see how that wit fares against twenty of history's greatest heroes!
— Aversa

Champions of Yore 3 (Japanese: 英霊の魔符3 Heroic Spirit Talisman 3) is a downloadable content xenologue chapter in Fire Emblem Awakening. As a xenologue chapter, it does not officially bear a chapter number; if all xenologues are purchased and its list is viewed at the Outrealm Gate, Champions of Yore 3 is the third one from the top in the North American version of the game. Officially in Japan and unofficially in North America, Champions of Yore 3 is part of the first series of DLC releases, a distinction that does not exist in the PAL regions.

This chapter was first made available on May 2, 2012 in Japan, February 14, 2013 in North America, and May 8-9 in the PAL regions. In the Japanese version of the game, the previous chapter, Champions of Yore 2, must be purchased and completed before the player is able to purchase this chapter; no such restriction exists in international versions of the game.

In this chapter, Aversa has once again conned Old Hubba out of his cards, and sends all twenty of the legendary figures from the previous two encounters against the Shepherds again. This time, the Shepherds are on their own, as they must face all twenty of the legendary figures without any assistance.

By night in the Talys-based Outrealm, Chrom notices that they're in the same Outrealm from before once again, and deduces that Old Hubba will be in the area soon; as if on cue, Old Hubba appears on the scene and asks Chrom to have the Shepherds save him once again. Chrom asks Old Hubba to settle down and asks what's going on this time; Old Hubba reveals that they're surrounded by a legion of Einherjar and he doesn't have any cards remaining to defend the Shepherds--Old Hubba claims everyone in the area is doomed, with himself asking "sweet Bea" to make room for him in heaven, he's coming to join her. Chrom asks Old Hubba to take it easy and asks about the cards the Shepherds had already retrieved, to which Old Hubba reveals that they had retrieved the cards--past tense, as Aversa has tricked him out of the cards again; Old Hubba reveals that Aversa had come to him crying and begging for forgiveness and she really did look sorry, smelling like roses. Old Hubba reveals he was fumbling with something when Chrom states he's had and heard enough. Aversa appears on the scene and thanks Old Hubba, using the "Bubbles" nickname, not only for his precious Einherjar but also for bringing the Shepherds back to the area for the Einherjar to slaughter. Chrom tells Aversa her phantoms don't have a ghost of a chance, to which she notes his cleverness and asks to see how his wit fares against twenty of history's greatest heroes. Preparations take place at this point.

Once preparations are finished, Ike notices the Shepherds are to be his opponents and they appear capable enough; Chrom notices something about Ike, to which Old Hubba reveals him to be a legend, with many saying he's the strongest the world has known--and more importantly, Ike was Old Hubba's favorite card, and he wants him back. Chrom notices that Ike certainly has the look of a legend, especially the hair; Ike asks Chrom if he's the leader of his army, to which Chrom confirms and introduces himself. Ike then introduces himself, including stating himself as being part of the Greil Mercenaries, and asks Chrom if they should get the battle over with, to which Chrom confirms and states it would be an honor to face Ike; Ike reveals he enjoys defeating worthy opponents, to which Chrom replies that'll be his line once the day is through. The battle begins at this point. At the end of the first player phase, Micaiah asks herself if she's fighting the right enemy, that nothing is clear anymore.

Once the battle ends, Old Hubba will ask Bea if she saw the battle, also congratulating Chrom in the process for winning yet another battle--all of Old Hubba's calling cards back safe and sound, making him happy. Old Hubba says he's giving Chrom the special tome he promised and asks Chrom to use it wisely (it is not at this point the game actually grants it to the player); Chrom thanks Old Hubba and says he's glad he could help, and that the Shepherds had best be headed back to their own world. Old Hubba has another vision, to which Chrom asks if he can't be serious; Old Hubba reveals that his vision is of the future again, but is bleak and horrible, and the Shepherds are not there this time--this vision is of the other Outrealms after the Shepherds abandoned them, with death everywhere. The other Outrealms in question have their own Einherjar and nobody like Old Hubba to keep them, these phantoms have taken on lives of their own and started great wars; Chrom reveals the Shepherds have their own great war to fight back in their world, to which Old Hubba states defeating those other Einherjar will help them in that struggle. Old Hubba sees gold, experience, legendary weapons and heroes, and it doesn't end there; Chrom asks himself why he feels as if he's being sold something at market. Chrom then asks Old Hubba how the Shepherds are to reach the other Outrealms, to which Old Hubba reveals to be an easy task--all they have to do is return to the Outrealm Gate, choose an Outrealm, and he'll guide them from there; Old Hubba says he should warn Chrom that saving the other Outrealms won't be quite so simple, that they may have to fight the same soldiers more than once to truly defeat them, as the Einherjar can come back to life and are stubborn in that way. Chrom asks if it has something to do with the time continuum, to which Old Hubba confirms and asks Chrom if he has the gift of foresight as well, and also if Chrom has deduced what must be done to stop these Einherjar; Old Hubba reveals that the Shepherds are to defeat the Einherjar repeatedly to weaken them, and then Old Hubba can seal them back into their cards. Chrom says it's no problem beating the greatest soldiers in history over and over again; Old Hubba states he'll be around with useful advice, and gives a sample of such--within their own worlds, the Einherjar believe they are real. Chrom asks Old Hubba how that hint is in any way useful, to which Old Hubba tries to confusingly answer the question; after Old Hubba gives up on answering Chrom's question, he'll then ask Chrom if he'll find the card he's about to give them more advantageous. The card is "Micaiah, Priestess of Dawn", with Old Hubba finding her lovely and hating to give her up, but a deal's a deal--Old Hubba asks Chrom to take her before he changes his mind.

In what appears to be a space between Outrealms, a conversation will then ensue between Micaiah and the player, with the choices the player makes affecting what Micaiah says next. At the end of the conversation, the player will then be given an offer to add her to their active roster, which they can either accept or decline. Afterward, the game finally grants the player the special tome Old Hubba gave them, a skill book that teaches the All Stats +2 skill.

Website summary

After getting his talismans back, the older fortuneteller makes a grave error, letting them fall into enemy hands. Twenty heroes are summoned from ten worlds. If Chrom and his team are victorious in this decisive battle, then perhaps they can acquire the Outrealm's hidden treasure.[1]

Trivia

  • The summary for this chapter on all of the international versions' official websites at one point refers to the Einherjar cards as "talismans", more in line with their portrayal in the Japanese version of the game.
  • The music track Echoes of Daybreak is slightly abridged from its original version.
