Brom (Japanese: チャップ Chap) is a farmer from Ohma that appears in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He, along with another villager from Ohma, Nephenee, join the militia during the Mad King's War. They are both captured but are later rescued by the Greil Mercenaries. In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Brom starts as a knight and in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn as an axe general. He is a good friend of Elincia's. He has multiple children, one of which appears in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Meg.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Role
Brom appears as an NPC unit in Chapter 10. He will be recruited at the end of the chapter if his cell door is opened and he survives; if Ike speaks to him, he will become a partner unit for the remainder of the chapter.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Brom is the second knight to join the party, and will be the only available one at his join time due to Gatrie's temporary departure. He has a good base defense, but for his join time, all of his other base stats are at best mediocre. In particular, his speed and resistance base are terrible. As an armored knight, he has the worst mobility in the game, which is permanently crippling due to how overwhelming mounted units are in this game. For him to contribute, he needs to be ferried around by mounted units and also given bonus experience, but other units like Titania and Kieran can already do what he can while being bulky, except with almost double the movement and Canto. To his credit, he is a lance user so he does have 1-2 range combat. When promoted, he can use swords which is barely a benefit as they are significantly weaker and lack 2-range combat. Brom has high weight so he can shove other beorc infantry, but this role is outclassed by any cat and tiger laguz as they can shove more units than Brom can, have better combat when transformed, are bulkier, and have much more movement than him even untransformed.
Brom has an excellent defense growth and a decent strength and skill growth. His speed growth is one of the worst in the game. While he can effectively have 55% speed growth with the knight ward, his base speed is so terrible that it is near unsalvagable, so the knight ward is put to better use on other units. It is better to invest into his strength and defense, as those are his stronger points.
Brom has no skills at base. With his decent skill growth, he can take Adept to help him attack more frequently, or Guard to improve his durability even further. Keep in mind, as Brom is permanently crippled by his class, almost any other physical combat unit makes better use of these skills than Brom, so this is only suggested as a last resort or for novelty. Brom can also learn Luna from an Occult, which is one of the better mastery skills, but again, any other non-armored unit that learns Sol or Luna are better uses of an Occult than Brom. Vantage can work well since, with 1-2 range and forges available and good strength, he can have some chances to one-shot weaker units before they attack him.
Brom has the very useful water affinity, which gives both attack and defense. All three of his partners are infantry units that really appreciate these bonuses. Boyd has a fire affinity, giving extra attack and accuracy. Zihark has earth, which gives pure avoid. Nephenee has the weakest paired affinity, having a wind affinity that gives only a light accuracy and avoid boost.
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Role
Brom becomes playable at part 2, chapter 1. Brom is seen doing his favorite activity: working on the field. He's talking with an old villager and Nephenee suddenly appears in her battle gear. Brom is fully suprised that Nephenee wears her gear and reminds her that the (Mad King's) war is over. She tells him he need a battle gear, too, because there's a rebellion army in their village and they are forming an uprising against Queen Elincia. Brom is confused and does what Nephenee told to him. Both get near to the rebellion army and listen what they're saying. Nephenee and Brom interrupt and demand them to leave the village at once. They also demand them to stop spreading lies about the queen and their royal army, since Nephenee and Brom were members of the royal crimean army. The rebellion army refuses, a few villagers obey them and are raising their weapons, which was brought by the rebellion army, against Nephenee and Brom. After killing Yeardley they heard the name of the army leader who is the true mastermind behind the rebellion against Queen Elincia. Nephenee and Brom decide to travel to Melior to inform Queen Elincia what happened in their village and they join the crimean army once again.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Brom is an axe general available for most of part 2, and joins Ike's group relatively early in chapter 3-2. He has good strength and defense base for part 2, complemented by 1-2 range axe usage. His base speed is too low to double almost anything, but not low enough to get doubled by enemy units. In chapter 2-1, he is defensively more reliable than Nephenee, and has better hitrates thanks to using an Iron Axe instead of a Steel Greatlance. He makes a good wall in 2-2 and 2-E, as those chapters have several chokepoints to block off. Note that he can use swords immediately, though they are significantly weaker than axes; the only use for swords is Wyrmslayer, but he does not have the weapon level for it. Path of Radiance transfers do not benefit Brom much, as the only stat he reliably caps in PoR is defense, and he is also a mediocre unit in PoR.
When Brom joins Ike's group, he is completely outclassed by Gatrie, who has much high strength, speed, and defense. Even if Brom reached Gatrie's level, his important stats are lower than base Gatrie on average. In the long run, Brom has excellent health, luck, and defense growth, but his strength, skill, and speed growths are at best average, and not enough to catch up. He will also not cap these stats early enough to abuse BEXP. In addition, Brom starts at level 2, so he does not have the option for an instant early promotion like Gatrie does. Brom's join time is also when mounted units like Titania and Haar become more prevalent, so Brom's terrible movement hurts him significantly. If promoted, Brom can use lances, which lets him use the Horseslayer immediately; however, he cannot use the Spear.
Brom starts with the Disarm skill which can be helpful through part 2 chapters to avoid counterattacks with other units, albeit unreliable. It also lets Heather steal enemy weapons more easily. As it is an innate skill, there is no reason to remove it manually if the player plans on using Brom more. Resolve helps Brom's offense as his skill and speed are mediocre, but other units can put it to better use. Provoke can be a valuable skill on him due to his excellent physical bulk.
Brom has the water affinity which gives a bonus to attack and defense. Nephenee shares the same availability as him and appreciates those boosts, though her wind affinity does not benefit either unit much, so both units will only have +2 attack and defense at max support. Heather also has the same availability and has a fire affinity, so she and Brom will have a valuable +3 attack boost; however, she is a thief and is not a valuable combat unit. Anyone else who joins Ike's group on 3-2 with similar movement and gives an attack and/or defense boost will complement Brom's water affinity.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Brom is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Radiant Dawn character set. Brom is also present as an enemy in the first and third installments of the Smash Brethren DLC series.
