Personality and character

Schaeffer is brutish and cowardly, choosing to force the Palmeni hostages to fight in order to protect himself and his men from the Crimean forces,[1] and threatening to murder them if they revealed to Ike's forces that Schaeffer and his men were present. He was somewhat fearful himself, however, as he fought the Crimean army only out of paranoia at the idea that they would kill him for working for Daein.[2] He seemed to be particularly terrified around laguz, even by Daein standards. Even when he died, he insisted that he failed only because he didn't use enough priests as hostages, and because he should have brought and used babies.

Against Ike in Chapter 22

Schaeffer: Bah! So you've made it this far, have you? Tell me, how many pathetic priests did you have to kill to get here? Come on, five? More? They're pretty scrawny... You could probably take ten or so without breakin' a sweat.
Ike: Cowardly cur! Time to stop hiding and fight like a man!

Tomenami: They want to investigate the temple. What should I tell them?
Schaeffer: Crud! This ain't good. I don't know what they're after, but if they find us mercenaries who sided with Daein, they'll wipe us out!
Tomenami: It is all the will of the goddess. Resign yourself to your fate... Accept it.
Schaeffer: Bat dung! No one's gonna roll over and die! Dying's for sissies! So tell me, how many are there?
