The constitution stat help prompt in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade.

Constitution (Japanese: 体格 Build), abbreviated as Con or Cn; also known as Build, abbreviated Bld; is a statistic applied to units that represents that unit's physical size. Its original function was to alleviate the effects of the weight of the unit's currently-equipped weapon on that unit's attack speed in battle—prior to the statistic's introduction in Thracia 776, units' attack speed bore the full brunt of a weapon's weight, often crippling users of heavy weapon types such as axes. Constitution also affects whether or not units can rescue each other: in Thracia 776 a unit with a higher constitution can rescue one with lower, but not vice versa. In later games with the rescue command, the Aid stat was introduced to allow mounted units to have a high rescuing capability without being able to easily wield heavy weapons, but it is still compared against the rescued unit's Constitution.

In its introductory game, Thracia 776, and Engage, Constitution (Build in Engage) can increase when leveling up like any other stat, although its growth rates are commonly very low compared to other statistics, usually in the 5-20% range. All other games featuring Constitution keep it as a semi-static value like Movement, only increasing in special circumstances like Class Changes or upon stat-boosting items being used.

The Constitution stat lost many of its functions in the Tellius games, Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn: in the attack speed calculation, it was replaced by Strength; the rescuing calculation instead used the new weight stat; and Aid was removed entirely. It, however, retained some niche usage in the calculations for the Colossus and Shove skills, in Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn respectively.

Constitution was removed entirely in Shadow Dragon, and did not reappear until Engage.

Attack speed

Main article: Attack speed
Game Formula Notes
Thracia 776 Speed − (Weapon weight − Constitution) Applies to physical weaponry only.
If (Weight − Con) is negative, the result is taken to be 0.
The Binding Blade Speed − (Weapon weight − Constitution) If (Weight − Con) is negative, the result is taken to be 0.
The Blazing Blade Speed − (Weapon weight − Constitution) If (Weight − Con) is negative, the result is taken to be 0.
The Sacred Stones Speed − (Weapon weight − Constitution) If (Weight − Con) is negative, the result is taken to be 0.
Engage Speed − (Weapon weight − Build) If (Weight − Bld) is negative, the result is taken to be 0.

The Aid stat exists only in the Game Boy Advance games, and its formulae are identical across all three games. Its main purpose is to determine whether or not one unit may Rescue another.

Foot unit's Aid: Constitution − 1
Male mounted unit's Aid: 25 − Constitution
Female mounted unit's Aid: 20 − Constitution

In Thracia 776, constitution affects the ability to steal. If a thief's constitution is greater than the weight of a weapon held by an enemy, the thief can steal that weapon (assuming that the thief is faster than the target).

Game Formula Notes
Thracia 776 If Thief's constitution > target weapon's weight --

Colossus skill

Main article: Colossus

In Path of Radiance only, constitution affects the Colossus skill's ability to trigger.

Game Formula Notes

Ability to shove

Main articles: Shove and Smite

In Radiant Dawn and Engage, a unit's constitution stat affects that unit's ability to use the Shove and Smite skills.

Game Formula Notes
Radiant Dawn If (user's constitution + 2) > target's weight --
Engage If (user's Bld) > (target's Bld) --

  • According to Taeko Kaneda, game designer of Path of Radiance, the reason that weight was introduced was due to confusion over what the constitution stat was supposed to represent. According to Kaneda, in the previous titles, constitution included armor and equipment, but this was ambiguous; thus, Path of Radiance separated a unit's constitution (before armor and equipment) from weight.[1]

  1. "Kaneda: By the way, the concept of "constitution" which appeared on characters in The Binding Blade and The Blazing Blade includes armor and equipment. However, since this wasn't clearly stated anywhere, there were mistaken thoughts on some of the more delicate female characters in illustrations, such as "Is she actually a gigantic woman?" (laughs). Partly for this reason, "Radiance" separately displays constitution (before factoring armor) and weight. One's mental image is important." — xkan, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Staff Interview (N.O.M 82 – May 2005), kantopia, Published: 20 April 2020, Retrieved: 12 October 2020
