Navarre (Japanese: ナバール Nabarl) is an infamous wandering mercenary known by the title "Scarlet Sword" (Japanese: 紅の剣士 Crimson Swordfighter), commonly found in the company of bandit groups for reasons unknown. During the occupation of Pales in the War of Shadows, he was involved in Rickard and Lena's robbery of the palace, and at some point afterward joined the Soothsire bandits of the Samsooth Mountains. When Lena and Julian attempt to escape from the Soothsires, Navarre pursues them, but is convinced to stand down and ally with Marth by Caeda. Years later, he becomes involved with the bandit group claiming the Fane of Raman in Chiasmir, but again defects to protect Phina and assist her in escaping the bandits. | |||

===Analysis=== | |||
analysis | |||
Navarre joins in Chapter 7 of Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem as a level 8 Mercenary. He has high base stats, and he joins surrounded by Thieves that grant large amounts of experience when defeated, including one who drops a Hero Crest Navarre needs to promote. With a very high base weapon level of 11, Navarre only needs one more point to wield every sword in the game. There are many swords with high might such as Mercurius, that provide bonus damage such as a Wyrmslayer, or that can be used at 1- or 2-range such as a Levin Sword. Navarre has fairly high defense and is capable of fighting multiple enemies on enemy phase; his max HP is relatively low, however, which can prevent him from safely fighting Medeus in the final chapter. | |||
As a Mercenary, Navarre has less movement than mounted units, but he suffers less severe penalties for moving on certain terrain and does not need to dismount indoors; promoting to Hero reduces many of those penalties and provides slight stat boosts. Mercenary and Hero, along with a number of other classes, have the highest available indoor movement, and as such, Navarre is among the best units available indoors. | |||

===Analysis=== | |||
analysis | |||
Navarre is a myrmidon that joins in chapter 3. Navarre is a fairly mediocre unit, coming with mediocre bases and growths. While his high speed growth might seem fairly impressive, it's only that high while he's in the myrmidon class line and will be lower if he's reclassed to anything besides an archer. Another problem for Navarre is that he specializes in swords, which are by far the worst weapon type in Shadow Dragon due to their low might and high number of lance enemies. He can use some useful swords such as the Wyrmslayer and Armorslayer at base, but any promoted unit that is reclassed to Swordmaster can use the same weapons. On top of this, Navarre lacks the strength to one-round even the enemies he is effective against without getting forges, which are better used for units such as Caeda. | |||
The peak of Navarre's usefulness is in the same chapter when he joins, because he gives you a Killing Edge and has weapon triangle advantage over most enemies in the chapter. He can be reclassed to Cavalier later, but then he is going to become slow enough to get doubled by enemies in higher difficulties. Overall, Navarre is a rather disappointing unit when taking his reputation of a legendary mercenary into consideration. | |||

===Analysis=== | |||
analysis | |||
Navarre showcases the changes made between Shadow Dragon and New Mystery quite distinctly by being a far better unit in this game. The main reason for this aren't his improved bases and growths, though they definitely help, rather it's the improved usefulness of swords. Because of the much higher number of axe using enemies through the entire game Navarre's fairly decent C rank in swords becomes fairly notable. Another aspect worth noting is how Navarre will quickly cap his speed and will be very close to A rank swords upon promotion form which he gets a +3 damage bonus to help his somewhat mediocre strength, Swordmaster is also a very useful class due to allowing him to double most enemies in the game while in it if used regularly. However Navarre is still held back by his low bulk, being especially problematic on lunatic reverse and reclassing allowing units such as Sirius to get access to all the strongest swords before Navarre, facing competition form fellow sword users such as Ogma and reclassed Swordmasters that will also get a C rank in swords. This isn't to say that Navarre is a bad unit, just that he has problems keeping up with the demanding stat benchamrks of New Mystery that even the strongest units in the game may struggle reaching and that his unique assets can be replicated by other units. | |||

===Role=== | |||
There are two different variations of Navarre available to Heroes, both of which are tied to his storyline appearance in Mystery of the Emblem. The normal variation of Navarre is one of the characters present in the game at its initial launch as an NPC, and was made available to players in the fifth Grand Hero Battle, which initially ran from April 4, 2017 through April 8, 2017. A ninja-themed variation of Navarre was made available between the period of November 6, 2020 through December 6, 2020 as part of the summoning event surrounding the In the Moment update. | |||

==Personality== | |||
Navarre speaks little and prefers to let his blade do the talking. He is dedicated to swordsmanship and has no higher calling. He fights for whoever pays him the most. | |||
However, there is one principle Navarre has. He does not want to fight women. Caeda can recruit Navarre in Shadow Dragon because he does not want to turn his blade on her. Even in general, Navarre helps out women more often than not. In Mystery of the Emblem (Book 2) and New Mystery of the Emblem, he helps Phina escape from bandits. In Shadow Dragon, he caves in to Caeda's recruitment attempt. | |||
Other than that, fighting anyone is fair game to Navarre. He does not make combat personal. If he is hired to kill people on the battlefield, he will. But he only finds true enjoyment when he fights strong opponents. | |||
Navarre does not care about people's morals. Whether his employer is good or evil is of no concern to him. All he cares about is to wield his sword in battle and get paid. Recruiting Navarre in Shadow Dragon requires Caeda to appeal to his abilities. She says that working with bandits is beneath him. Between that and Caeda being a woman, it convinces him to switch sides. The interaction shows where Navarre's priorities lie. | |||
Navarre does not care about recognition and prefers to be alone. He tends to push people away, making it difficult for others to get through to him. This leads him to live his life in solitude. In his Shadow Dragon ending, he disappears. No one ever sees him again. Other people recognize Navarre's solitude as a problem. In New Mystery of the Emblem, Marth assigns Kris to fight alongside Navarre. The prince believes it will benefit the army. | |||
However, Navarre is capable of breaking his solitude. He can make emotional connections with people, although it is rare. In his level 40 conversation in Heroes, Navarre says that he can imagine a future with Kiran's forces. But soon after, he dismisses this as nonsense. This shows that Navarre can develop feelings but actively hides them. | |||
Another example is in Mystery of the Emblem. In Chapter 7 of book 2, Navarre goes out of his way to rescue the dancer Phina from bandits. He makes sure to keep her safe throughout the escape and brings her to Marth's army. This shows that Navarre can express care about people and do things without being paid for it. It is just rare when he does. He also expresses care in his New Mystery of the Emblem base conversation with Kris. Kris had injured their left finger, and Navarre requests them to treat it. | |||
Navarre does not see himself as anything special. When Kris questions him in their New Mystery of the Emblem base conversation, Navarre describes himself as a bandit. He says that he is nothing like the soft-hearted Kris. This shows that despite his attitude, he is well-aware of his misgivings. He also feels guilty about his past with bandits. This may be why he rescued Phina from them and why he calls himself one. | |||
Navarre's most significant problems are confronted in his final base conversation with Phina in New Mystery of the Emblem. He calls himself a murderer and nothing more. He says that he has no purpose other than to search for new battlefields. Navarre also claims that settling down would cause "unnecessary feelings" to develop. This shows that Navarre tries hard to hide emotions at all times. After that, he tries to push Phina away by calling her an eyesore. But she will not leave his side despite his insistence. She says that she will change him, and he has no response to that. | |||
This shows that Navarre's lifestyle is detrimental to him as a person. His only hope of changing it is to have someone else help him. The problem is that he pushes everyone away, which prevents that from happening. He must realize it somewhere deep down, but he buries those feelings all the time. Navarre is his own worst enemy. | |||

While passing through the Samsooth Mountains, he is accosted by members of the Soothsires and easily defeats them, and is approached by their leader Hyman with an employment offer. Navarre initially refuses, but reconsiders upon seeing Lena captured and being brought to the group's headquarters, and joins them. During his time with the Soothsires, Navarre experiences a nightmare in which an unidentified woman is killed by bandits while he is trapped and unable to help, hinting at his motivations. | ||

“ | If either of you are lying, I'll cut your tongues. | ” | — Navarre, to Rickard and Castor |
---|

Fire Emblem: Archanea Saga
Role
Navarre encounters Lena in the city of Pales, where she is being assaulted by a thug. He drives the thug away with his reputation alone, then is hired by Lena for a down-payment of 1000 gold, to act as a bodyguard for her heist on the Millennium Court. He and Lena then meet up with Rickard, who has recruited Castor for the job, and the four gather to plan the heist itself, during which Navarre makes it perfectly clear that he had no patience for being tricked or roped into a greedy endeavour. The heist goes ahead as planned, until the group is cornered by Camus, but Nyna convinces him to let them go.

Analysis

Analysis

Personality
Navarre speaks little and prefers to let his blade do the talking.[1] He is dedicated to swordsmanship and has no higher calling. He fights for whoever pays him the most.[2]
However, there is one principle Navarre has. He does not want to fight women. Caeda can recruit Navarre in Shadow Dragon because he does not want to turn his blade on her.[3] Even in general, Navarre helps out women more often than not. In Mystery of the Emblem (Book 2) and New Mystery of the Emblem, he helps Phina escape from bandits. In Shadow Dragon, he caves in to Caeda's recruitment attempt.
Other than that, fighting anyone is fair game to Navarre. He does not make combat personal.[4] If he is hired to kill people on the battlefield, he will. But he only finds true enjoyment when he fights strong opponents.[5]
Navarre does not care about people's morals. Whether his employer is good or evil is of no concern to him. All he cares about is to wield his sword in battle and get paid.[6] Recruiting Navarre in Shadow Dragon requires Caeda to appeal to his abilities. She says that working with bandits is beneath him. Between that and Caeda being a woman, it convinces him to switch sides. The interaction shows where Navarre's priorities lie.[7]
Navarre does not care about recognition and prefers to be alone. He tends to push people away, making it difficult for others to get through to him.[8] This leads him to live his life in solitude. In his Shadow Dragon ending, he disappears. No one ever sees him again.[9] Other people recognize Navarre's solitude as a problem. In New Mystery of the Emblem, Marth assigns Kris to fight alongside Navarre. The prince believes it will benefit the army.[10]
However, Navarre is capable of breaking his solitude. He can make emotional connections with people, although it is rare. In his level 40 conversation in Heroes, Navarre says that he can imagine a future with Kiran's forces. But soon after, he dismisses this as nonsense. This shows that Navarre can develop feelings but actively hides them.[11]
Another example is in Mystery of the Emblem. In Chapter 7 of book 2, Navarre goes out of his way to rescue the dancer Phina from bandits. He makes sure to keep her safe throughout the escape and brings her to Marth's army. This shows that Navarre can express care about people and do things without being paid for it. It is just rare when he does.[12] He also expresses care in his New Mystery of the Emblem base conversation with Kris. Kris had injured their left finger, and Navarre requests them to treat it.[13]
Navarre does not see himself as anything special. When Kris questions him in their New Mystery of the Emblem base conversation, Navarre describes himself as a bandit. He says that he is nothing like the soft-hearted Kris. This shows that despite his attitude, he is well-aware of his misgivings.[14] He also feels guilty about his past with bandits.
She says that she will change him, and he has no response to that.[15]
This shows that Navarre's lifestyle is detrimental to him as a person. His only hope of changing it is to have someone else help him. The problem is that he pushes everyone away, which prevents that from happening. He must realize it somewhere deep down, but he buries those feelings all the time. Navarre is his own worst enemy.

Anime
Navarre is a central character of the second episode of the Fire Emblem anime, here called Navahl.
Navarre notices that Julian keeps sneaking off to bring Lena food, and when the two escape and are cornered by three of the Soothsires, Navarre appears and kills the assailants before disappearing as fast as he came. During the Soothsires' fight with Marth's army, Navarre engages Ogma in a duel, the latter being aware of the legends surrounding the former. The two wound each other slightly, but the fight is broken up by Caeda, who convinces Navarre to ally with Marth's forces.

- ↑ "You're strong, all right. It's a close call—which of you is stronger? You... or him? Heh. This is going to get interesting. I'm sure I'll see you around." — Navarre, Fire Emblem Heroes
- ↑ "Good? Evil? I couldn't care less what those who hire me stand for. My job is to wield this sword. Just keep one thing in mind—I don't work cheap." — Navarre, Fire Emblem Heroes
- ↑ "Navarre! Since when does a swordsman of your caliber fall in with thieves and cutthroats?" — Caeda to Navarre, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
- ↑ "If you don't need anything, I'd like to be on my own.
Don't waste time talking to me. Focus on the next battle.
...You're in my way." — Navarre's lines in the castle, Fire Emblem Heroes - ↑ "Navarre vanished after the great struggle, but for years, impostors appeared, hoping to profit from his reputation the world round." — Navarre's ending, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
- ↑ "Kris:Starting now, I am to fight alongside you in the coming battles.
Navarre: ...Why must I fight with you?
Kris:I don't know what Prince Marth has in mind, but it's probably related to the fact that you fight alone far too often... I believe he thought that you acting alongside someone would benefit our army as a whole." — Navarre and Kris, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem - ↑ "I usually fight alone. However... I can imagine a future fighting with all of you. Never mind. Don't listen to anything I've said. It's all nonsense, and I blame you for my sentimentality, [Summoner]." — Navarre, Fire Emblem Heroes
- ↑ "Miss… Follow me. The Altean army is approaching from the south of this forest. I will take you to them… (...) Anyway, just don't leave my side. We'll head through the passageway towards the west and make our escape. If you don't want to die, then be quiet!!" — Navarre while helping Phina escape, Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
- ↑ "Your ring finger... looks to be injured. Get it treated... It'll be a hindrance in battle." — Navarre to Kris, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
- ↑ "...I'm no different from a bandit. I'm not like you." — Navarre to Kris, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
- ↑ "Phina: Hey, Navarre. You're planning to go somewhere when this war is over, aren't you?
Navarre: ......
Phina:It's no use staying silent. I see right through you. But, why?
Navarre: ...I am just a murderer. If a battle is over, then I need to search for my next battlefield.
Phina: Don't you have any plans of settling down?
Navarre: My sword would grow dull. If I stay in a place for too long, unnecessary feelings develop within my heart.
Phina: And why do you avoid that? It's completely normal for a human. Life is more fun when full of emotion.
Navarre: That's how I live. Don't stay around me anymore. You're an eyesore.
Phina: An eyesore...? You're too cruel.
Navarre: I don't know what you don't get, but if you keep bothering me, I'll cut you down.
Phina: ...Tee hee hee!
Navarre: What's so funny?
Phina: Like I'd be afraid. You don't turn your sword on women. I know that well enough.
Navarre:...You can't stay with me.
Phina: Oh... Look, now you're embarrassed. But you see, I have to repay you for saving my life, so I'm tagging along no what matter what you say. And then, I'll rattle you by making "unnecessary" feelings sprout. That's how I'll repay the favor. Tee hee, I can't wait!" — Navarre and Phina, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem
