“ | We mustn't overlook our duty as knights to protect the people. | ” | — Sigurd |
---|
Sigurd (Japanese: シグルド Siglud) was a scion of Grannvale's House Chalphy, the son and heir of Duke Byron and, as a descendant of the Crusader Baldr, inheritor of the holy weapon Tyrfing. Knighted as a Holy Knight of Grannvale, during the Grannvale war with Isaach he fought to defend Grannvale's territory from invasions by Verdane and Agustria, but was rapidly embroiled in the plots of Arvis and Manfroy and was framed for crimes against the Grannvale royal family. During his time in Verdane and Agustria, he met his wife Deirdre and had a son, Seliph.
Sigurd is the main lord character of the first generation of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, with Seliph succeeding him for the second generation.
Biography
Early life
Sigurd was the eldest of Byron's two children, the other being his younger sister Ethlyn. Their mother died during their youth, after which the Chalphy household was mostly kept together through Ethlyn's efforts as neither Sigurd nor Byron picked up after themselves.[1] Sigurd was educated at the military academy in Belhalla, where he first met Quan and Eldigan and formed a strong bond of friendship with the two. On one night during their attendance at the academy, the trio swore an oath to aid each other in times of crisis.[2]
The Verdane incursion
Sigurd remained behind in Chalphy with a handful of knights at the onset of Grannvale's war with Isaach in Grann 757, while Byron departed for war with almost the entire military of Chalphy. Upon receiving word of the incursion of Verdane's army into Grannvale, Sigurd immediately rode out with Alec and Naoise to aid Edain at the beseiged Yngvi Castle, tasking Arden with the defence of Chalphy and taking Oifey along as a strategist and advisor. He and his forces, backed up by the arrival of Quan, Azelle and Lex, quickly subdued the Verdane occupation in Yngvi, where he learned that Edain had been abducted, and from there crossed the Jun River into Verdane territory to seize Castle Evans. During the battle, Sigurd was approached by Arvis, who provided him with a silver sword as a gift from King Azmur. At Evans, finding no sign of Edain, Sigurd resolved to storm the rest of the country to find her. He was also visited by Filat, a messenger from Belhalla, who informed Sigurd that he had been ordained as a Holy Knight of Grannvale, and tasked him with the defense of the border from Evans.
With Eldigan promising to cover Sigurd from potential aggression from Agustria to the north, Sigurd pressed on into Verdane, freeing Prince Shannan of Isaach and his guardian, Princess Ayra, from Prince Cimbaeth at Castle Genoa. On the way to Castle Marpha, he encountered Edain, who had been freed from captivity in the castle by Jamke. At Castle Marpha, after defeating Prince Gandolf, he stepped in to stop a thug harassing Deirdre, with whom he became instantly enamoured; to his surprise, she immediately fled Marpha. The two would soon meet again in Verdane's Spirit Forest, her home, where she offered her assistance in stopping Sandima of the Loptr Church and the two confessed their strong mutual love. With Deirdre's assistance, Sigurd's army slew Sandima and captured the Verdane capital, where he and Oifey found King Batu dying from wounds inflicted by Sandima. Sigurd learned of the existence of the Loptrians and their role in the Verdane aggression from Batu's dying words.
Uprising in Agustria
Sigurd was entrusted by the capital to govern the Verdane territory following its downfall, using Evans Castle as his base of operations. He and Deirdre were married during their tenure at Evans. During his time in Evans, King Imca of Agustria was assassinated and succeeded by his son, Chagall, who declared war on Grannvale-held Verdane, arrested Eldigan and authorized an attack on Nordion. In response, Sigurd deployed his army to come to Lachesis's aid at Nordion, defeating the forces of Elliot of Heirhein and recruiting Lachesis's support in opposing Chagall. In this skirmish, Sigurd defeated three Agustrian states—Heirhein, Anphony and Mackily—and encountered Lewyn, who convinced Sigurd that a peaceful resolution was ideal but that ceasing hostilities now would incur Chagall's wrath upon the citizens. He later met Erinys, a Silessian knight who revealed to him Lewyn's true identity as the errant prince of Silesse, and in an audience with the Grannvale messenger Filat learned of the rise of rumors implicating Sigurd in treasonous conspiracy circulating at home. Eventually Sigurd defeated Chagall at the capital, Agusti, but Chagall was saved by Eldigan. Sigurd negotiated with Eldigan a year of Grannvale occupation, with the intent of restoring peace and order before handing the country back to Chagall. On orders from Belhalla, Sigurd adopted Agusti as his base of operations to govern Agustria in this period, and despite his best efforts to seek a peaceful return of Agustria to Chagall, the orders from home never changed and insisted on his continued military presence.
Six months into Sigurd's occupation, the Grannvale governors deployed throughout Agustria took to abusing their power and inciting dissatisfaction in the country's people, and around the same time Chagall secretly worked to assemble a new Agustrian army at Madino Castle, then launched an attack on Sigurd in a bid to get Agusti back by force. Sigurd responded by attacking and conquering Madino, only to find Chagall had escaped to Sylvale Castle in the west during the battle; while he was fighting, Deirdre was abducted by Manfroy after leaving Agusti to find Sigurd. In a meeting with Claud and Tailtiu, Sigurd learned of Kurth's murder and Byron's disappearance and implication in the crime. After Madino's downfall, Chagall forced Eldigan and the Cross Knights to deploy to fight Sigurd, resulting in Eldigan's death much to Sigurd's distress. Sigurd's army defeated Chagall at Sylvale for a second time, with Chagall dying this time, after which Sigurd was informed by Shannan of Deirdre's disappearance. Sigurd then worked to repel an attack on the Agustrian mainland from the Orgahil pirates, recruiting Brigid and reuniting with Claud, only to be met with the arrival of Lombard and Reptor seeking to arrest him for his alleged involvement in Kurth's murder. With Annand's assistance, Sigurd fled to Silesse and entered Queen Rahna's protection.
Silesse and the Battle of Belhalla
Most of Sigurd's days in Silesse were spent in quiet frustration, as Rahna's attempts to negotiate Sigurd's innocence with King Azmur consistently fell on deaf ears. Quan and Ethlyn parted his company to return to Leonster and raise an army to assist Sigurd in his struggles with Grannvale. Near the end of his time in Rahna's custody, Sigurd was embroiled in the Silessian civil war and fought on Rahna's behalf to protect the country from an attempted coup by her brothers-in-law, Maios and Daccar, only to find that Grannvale had involved itself in the civil war and, at its end, had already conquered Silesse's easternmost reaches in preparation to invade Silesse and capture Sigurd.
Not wanting to endanger Silesse any further, Sigurd instead departed Silesse to lead his army to attack Grannvale's forces first, with the intent of returning to Grannvale to clear his name by force. He fought Andrey and Langbalt at Lubeck Castle, and after capturing it he tasked Oifey and Shannan with taking the infant Seliph, as well as a few other children from his army, and finding refuge in Isaach. He led his army south through the Aed Desert, clearing the Velthomer army out of Phinora Castle en route, only to learn from Phinora's elder that Quan and Ethlyn had been ambushed and killed further south in the desert.
Sigurd's final obstacle was Velthomer Castle, under the guard of Aida, Reptor and their armies. To Sigurd's surprise, Aida commanded her army to turn on Reptor as Sigurd approached and the two successfully defeated Reptor. Following the fight's end, Aida told Sigurd that Arvis had been on his side all along and that he awaited Sigurd's return in Belhalla. Sigurd led his army to Belhalla, where Arvis instead sentenced him and his entire army to death for their crimes of treason, and introduced him to his new wife, Deirdre. Sigurd was confused and pained at seeing how Deirdre no longer remembered him, but before he could do anything Arvis had Deirdre taken back to the castle and ordered his men to execute Sigurd's army. Sigurd was personally killed by Arvis with a blast of Valflame.
Legacy
Initially following his death, Sigurd was still widely considered by the world at large to be a traitor and murderer. However, as the Grannvale Empire under Arvis descended into Loptrian-influenced tyranny, Sigurd's story was spread by bards, and so he regained popularity among the common people of Jugdral and was hailed as a martyr, the first to try fighting Arvis to protect the world from his schemes.[3] His status as Sigurd's son contributed to Seliph gaining popularity as a symbol of hope for Isaach and later the entirety of Jugdral, and stories of Sigurd told by her mother motivated Fee/Hermina to join Seliph's ranks.[4]
Following his defeat of Arvis late in his liberation war, Seliph was visited by Sigurd and Deirdre's ghosts. Sigurd's ghost warned Seliph to understand the suffering of the common people and not take all the credit for Arvis's defeat.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Sigurd is a prepromoted lord and has the stats to match. His strength allows him to cleanly one round most early game enemies, and his base speed is enough to double enemies for much of the game. Sigurd's bulk grows quickly as he levels, and between his high HP and defense growths he will quickly reach the point where he can shrug off most physical attacks. Sigurd's strength and speed grow somewhat slower, but between his high bases and generally slow enemies, this barely hurts him. Low resistance is an enduring problem for Sigurd, but between his 9 move and Canto, he can often avoid engaging mages in the first place.
Sigurd's only skill is Follow-Up, but this is all he needs. With a * in swords and a B in lances, Sigurd has access to all the strongest weaponry in his generation, which easily compensates for a lack of other offensive skills and grants him some ability to manipulate the weapon triangle. He also enjoys a sibling support with Ethlyn, whose unique role as a mounted healer means she will often be fighting near Sigurd. Despite Sigurd's promoted status, his low starting level allows him to gain experience on pace with other units.
As the lord of the first generation, Sigurd has perfect availability. The prologue and chapter one are full of axe using opponents that Sigurd can easily dispatch without much risk to himself. The Agustria chapters are not so easily trivialized, but if Sigurd has a few levels under his belt he can solo whole brigades of enemies with Ethlyn's healing support. Chapter four is the only time that Sigurd struggles, due to the concentration of fast wind mages and terrain inimical to mounts, though with the proper equipment he is more than capable here. In chapter five Sigurd is slowed down by desert terrain, but is otherwise one of the strongest combat units. In sum, Sigurd's movement and stats allow him to spend the whole game charging ahead of the pack, slaughtering enemies at little risk of death.
Sigurd is hardly impacted by the lack of trading Genealogy of the Holy War. He is often far ahead of the rest of the army and must seize every castle, making him a frequent boss killer. He will thus quickly accumulate a collection of rings and items while other units flounder in the arena. Sigurd is also given a Silver Sword at the end of the prologue, which few other units can use this early. Thus for much of the game, Sigurd has little competition for resources that other units are too poor to buy in the pawn shop. Once other units start competing for rings, Sigurd still has the advantage of having expensive items already in his inventory. Moreover, Sigurd is completely capable of one rounding most enemies by virtue of his stats alone; if the player wants to make Sigurd even stronger, they can invest in the Brave Lance or Brave Sword, allowing Sigurd to one round even armor knights.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Sigurd is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the Genealogy of the Holy War first-generation character set. Along with Eliwood and Hector, Sigurd is one of three lord characters to not have a paid DLC version of himself available.
Sigurd is also present as an enemy in the second and third installments of the Champions of Yore DLC series, the first and third installments of Lost Bloodlines, and the second and third installments of Rogues & Redeemers. He also appears as an NPC in Lost Bloodlines 2 and Rogues & Redeemers 1.
As with several other legacy characters in Awakening, there is a unique weapon named for Sigurd available through the Barracks or event tiles: Sigurd's Lance.

Personality and character
Sigurd fundamentally means well and legitimately wishes to help people, but is reckless and short-sighted, leaps into battle without thinking it over and does not easily see or think through the full breadth of the consequences of his actions; for instance, as pointed out by Lewyn, Sigurd had failed to realize how his invasion of Agustria endangered its innocent citizens.[5] He is a warrior and a knight first and foremost, and as such his first response to a crisis is usually to lead his soldiers to retaliate with military force, even in cases where it would not be advisable. In spite of his behaviour he usually does care for innocent people, especially children, when he is actually aware of or forced to confront their presence in an area, refusing to risk their safety in battle.[6] Like his father, he was similarly messy and lazy in his life at home in Chalphy, with Ethlyn considering him sloppy for how often she had to clean after him prior to marrying Quan.[1]
Love growths and events
Sigurd is incapable of any love growth with any character; however, in Chapter 1, he automatically gains maximum love points with Deirdre when she is recruited.
- In the Prologue, Sigurd can be talked to by Lex, Azelle, Quan and Ethlyn as they are recruited, giving no reward.
- In the Prologue, Arvis (as a partner unit) will talk to Sigurd to give him a Silver Sword, then leave the map once this is accomplished.
- In Chapter 1, Sigurd can talk to Ayra after Genoa Castle has been seized, recruiting her.
- In Chapter 2, Sigurd can talk to Lachesis as a partner unit, recruiting her.
- In Chapter 2, Sigurd can talk to Lewyn once he has been recruited, giving no reward.
- In Chapter 2, Erinys can talk to Sigurd once she has been recruited, giving no reward.
- In Chapter 3, Sigurd can talk to Brigid once she has been recruited, giving no reward.
- In Chapter 3, Claud can talk to Sigurd once he has been recruited, giving no reward.
- In Chapter 4, Sigurd can talk to Claud at any time, giving no reward.
- In Chapter 4, Sigurd can talk to Lewyn once Silesse Castle has been seized. This gives no reward, but reminds the player to have Lewyn go to Silesse Castle in order to get Forseti.
- In Chapter 5, Sigurd can talk to Byron (as a partner unit) in order to receive Tyrfing in a broken state. This must be done before Lubeck Castle has been seized, or Byron will disappear and Tyrfing cannot be obtained.
- In Chapter 5, Sigurd can talk to Ayra once Lubeck Castle has been seized, giving no reward.
- In Chapter 5, Sigurd must talk to Aida at Velthomer Castle in order to clear the chapter.

- ↑ 1.0 1.1 "Sigurd: Heh heh... you’ve always had your head on straight, haven’t you... You know you did a great job filling mum’s shoes after she passed away. When you married into Leonster’s royal family, I swore we had a lady on our hands. But you’re still the same old Ethlyn. Poor Quan! Hahaha!
Ethlyn: Sigurd! If I’m a nag, it’s because of you and dad! If both of you weren’t such slobs!" — Sigurd and Ethlyn, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑ "Remember the academy? We all met at the military academy back in Belhalla. It was the three of us. You, me, and Eldigan. We were talking late that one night. And we took a vow to help each other out if one of us was ever in a bind." — Quan, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "Yes. Ah, Lord Seliph's father was your uncle. Lord Sigurd... He was called a villain just a decade ago, but now he's quite popular. He recognized the schemes of the Emperor before anyone else, and died fighting to protect the world. Bards spread his story far and wide, and now he's become a legendary hero. And his son, Lord Seliph, is fighting to fulfill his father's wishes... The people are overjoyed. They wouldn't hesitate to give their lives to his cause. It's the perfect scenario." — August, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
- ↑ "I came because I want to see if I can join Isaach's liberation army. When I was little my mum used to tell me about Sigurd, the Holy Knight, and his brave warriors. Their story really stuck with me, and now Sigurd's son is leading an uprising in Isaach. I thought this was my calling, so I grabbed my stuff and shot out of Silesse." — Fee/Hermina, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
- ↑ "Lewyn: I take it you're that Sigurd guy. You must have an awful lot of free time to be runnin' around startin' wars all over the place!
Sigurd: Huh? I don't follow. What're you so angry about?
Lewyn: Try putting yourself into these people's shoes for a second! They're just tryin' to make a livin' here. Then you show up, flashin' your shiny swords around...
Sigurd: Hmm... I see your point. Geez, I feel awful about the Agustrian people.
Lewyn: Well, talk is cheap. If you really feel so bad, why don't you pack up and leave?
Sigurd: Alright then. Look, I'll go consult with my people.
Lewyn: W-w-whoa! You serious about pullin' out!?
Sigurd: Yeah, I've been tossing the idea around myself, and you just helped me make up my mind. I'm through fighting. I've got to try and settle this with King Chagall peacefully.
Lewyn: Ah... that'd be a complete and utter waste of your time. He wouldn't listen to you. And if Grannvale pulls out now, all the citizens who helped you guys out'll be tossed in jail! Doesn't that bother you?
Sigurd: Well, um... of course it does! But... didn't I, er...
Lewyn: Hahaha! You're alright, Sigurd. Look, how about I join up with you guys?" — Lewyn and Sigurd, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War - ↑ "Lombard's military is here for us, not Silesse. The Silesians have been too kind to us. This my problem, and I can't drag them into it. We need to move out of Zaxon Castle at once and settle this with Lombard." — Sigurd, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
