“ | What have I been doing? Helping the Empire snatch innocent children away from their families? Or helping them send the children to Belhalla to be sacrificed? | ” | — Olwen |

Olwen (Japanese: オルエン Olwen) is a knight of Friege, and the younger sister of the Friege general Reinhardt. She served as part of Friege's military force in its control of the Munster District, in command of a reconnaisance squad headquartered at Fort Dandrum. She was betrayed and imprisoned by Kempf, her superior in the Friege army, out of his bitter hatred for her brother, where she learned first-hand the horrors of the child hunts perpetuated by Friege's occupation. With this experience, she allied with Leif's revolution army after being freed by her subordinate Fred.
Biography
As Leif's army marched on Nowell Valley, a natural boundary between Thracia and Grannvale's holdings in the Munster District, Olwen and Fred were present on a scouting mission; despite General Largo's misgivings, they chose to remain behind for a while to assist, but eventually departed nonetheless.
She reported back to Kempf at Fort Dandrum, who accused her of providing poor surveillance, refused to help Largo and goaded her into drawing her blade on him. On these charges, he had her imprisoned in the fort's dungeon. In the dungeon, she met numerous children captured in Child Hunts, and was moved by their terror. Upon being freed by Fred and Leif, she chose to ally with them, considering them to align better with her virtues than the Friege army.
As she accompanied Leif, they came to fight her brother Reinhardt. Olwen tried to persuade him to stop fighting, and though she was unable to convince him, he gave her a Blessed Sword.
Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
Role
Olwen is a playable character. In Chapter 10, Olwen, along with Fred, appear as enemy units on turn 4, or when a unit reaches column 19; Olwen cannot be killed this chapter. On turn 6, she begins moving to escape. In Chapter 11x, Olwen appears as an NPC unit. She is recruited when talked to by Fred. In Chapter 16A, Olwen can talk to Kempf, changing his behavior from stationary to moving unprovoked. In the same chapter, Ilios can only be recruited if Olwen is dead or unrecruited. In Chapter 22, Olwen can talk to Reinhardt, granting her the Blessed Sword.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Olwen is the first (and maybe only) Mage Knight to join Leif's army. She comes with rather mediocre base stats, but has a high FCM and decent growth rates aside from her rather bad HP and defense growth. Since her HP and defense will be consistently low, Olwen will be weak against physical attacks for the entire game, making her ill-suited for taking on multiple enemies on enemy phase. On the other hand, her base magic and speed are pretty decent, allowing her to one-round-KO most enemies with her personal tome, the Dire Thunder, or a Wind tome quite reliably on player phase.
Dire Thunder is a quite powerful brave weapon that can only be used by Olwen and her unplayable brother Reinhardt. It is distinct for its brave effect, unique among tomes, allowing it to one-round without retaliation. However, it's also a quite heavy tome, reducing Olwen's speed by 12 points when equipped, which cannot be reduced by constitution. This means that it is unable to double even the slowest units until Olwen gains 6 speed, which will take 12 levels on average. This also greatly reduces Olwen's avoid and makes her vulnerable to enemy follow-up attacks, often getting her killed by a stronger physical enemy during enemy phase. Enemies on terrain with good 1-2 range weapons like bosses are also risky to fight with the Dire Thunder, since they can dodge Olwen's attack and easily kill her on retaliation. It might be tempting to combine Olwen's Dire Thunder with the Vantage Scroll, since Dire Thunder will counter and two-hit-KO most enemies. However, Dire Thunder has imperfect accuracy, and a miss will often result in her death. It can be used for capturing as well, though the stat penalties that are inflicted on Olwen also make this risky. Overall, Dire Thunder is a strong tome, but is worse than the standard Wind tome in a lot of situations.
Olwen also obtains a second personal weapon very late in the game, the Blessed Sword, by talking to Reinhardt in chapter 22. Equipping this Brave Sword grants Olwen the Miracle skill as well as +10 magic, making her the most magic-resistant unit in the lategame. Since the sword only has 1 range, however, she'll also lose her ability to counter enemy mages as soon as she equips it, making the magic boost a lot less relevant. It also deals effective damage against mounted units, but this is only relevant in chapters 22 and 23. Generally, Olwen will still fare best when using magic tomes instead of swords.
Another important tome in Olwen's arsenal is Bolting. Bolting is a tome with a massive 3-10 range that can be stolen from certain enemies and then be used to take out those over large distances, and in order to use it, Olwen only needs to increase her Thunder rank once (for example by killing weak generic enemies with Dire Thunder). It's especially useful to pick off enemy ballistae or other siege tome users before they can attack you, but it can also be used to defeat stationary enemies from a safe distance or help out distant allies who need some additional firepower. With her good magic and some help of the Magic Up staff, Olwen can often use Bolting to deal significant damage or even one-shot enemies from afar. Another point in Olwen's favour when using Bolting is her mobility: as a mounted unit, Olwen can easily move into enemy range, snipe a unit with Bolting, and use Canto to retreat from danger when fighting outdoors.
Being mounted does not only let Olwen Canto after her actions, but it also lets her take and drop almost every non-mounted unit in the game during outdoor chapters. On the other hand, it also means Olwen will face a small stat and a major movement penalty when fighting indoors. While the stat penalty barely affects her ability to kill enemies with magic spells, the movement penalty makes it a lot harder for her to reach or escape from those enemies, making her frailness a lot more of an issue than it is in outdoor fights. Indoors, she will have only 5 movement, less than every other promoted unit.
Overall, Olwen is a decent, yet not amazingly strong unit. Her personal weapon, as well as mounted movement and access to the Bolting tome, give her an interesting niche as a hard-hitting player phase unit with additional rescue-drop-utility in outdoor battles, but most of the combat will usually still be done by your more durable units since they can reliably take on multiple enemies at once.

Fire Emblem Heroes
Role
There are two different variations of Olwen available to Heroes, both of which are tied to her storyline appearance in Thracia 776. The normal variation of Olwen is one of the characters added to the game in the Sibling Bonds update, and became available for summoning by players on February 27, 2017. A second variation of Olwen, here dubbed the "World of Thracia" variation after the name of the summoning event she debuted in for lack of a theme common to most other variant characters, was made available on April 11, 2017 as part of the summoning event surrounding the launch of the Snow and Ash update.

Thracia 776
Olwen, Blue Mage Knight
After the war, Olwen returned to Friege and aided its reconstruction. Whenever she remembered her brother Reinhardt, she burned with anger at his pitifulness. Perhaps because of that, the man whom she married was surprisingly ordinary.
