“ | I'm sorry for lying... But I've chosen not to run away anymore. | ” | — Lugh when deciding to go after Chad. |
---|
Lugh (Japanese: ルゥ Lugh) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade. He first appears in Chapter 3.
He comes from an orphanage in Araphen, where he grew up with his twin brother Raigh and Chad, who became his best friend. He is the son of Nino and potentially either Erk, Jaffar, or an unspecified spouse of Nino's.
In Fire Emblem Awakening, Lugh returns as a character playable through SpotPass, and he also makes an appearance in some of the DLC chapters.
Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade
Role
Lugh is a Lycian child who lost his parents at the age of four. He and his twin brother ended up in an orphanage in Araphen, where they meet Chad. Lugh striked a fast friendship with him. At some point before the game's events, Lugh discovered he could use magic.[1]
Lugh's life changed completely when Bern attacked Araphen Castle. The orphanage where he lived was destroyed, and the father who cared for them was killed for trying to defend their small garden.[2] Lugh was too shocked to do something else than protecting the younger children, and so, he did not realized Chad was missing until it was too late.
After making sure the children went under the Elimine Church's protection, Lugh decides to follow Chad and join him in his quest for revenge. When he finally catches up with his friend, Chad tries to send him back with the others, to what Lugh absolutely refuses. Some protests later, Chad accepts his company, and they join Roy's army for the rest of the war.
In the Western Isles, Lugh finally finds his missing brother, and after some prodding, he manages to convince Raigh of joining the Lycian Army.
Once Bern is defeated and the war is over, Lugh founds a magic school for orphans in the same place where the orphanage was. Over the years, many of the students from his school would become famous and powerful sages.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Lugh is a level 1 mage who joins very early. His stats are low across the board, but his growths are solid by The Binding Blade standards. With the Fire tome's high accuracy, he can deal reliable chip damage early on. This is a valuable niche in Hard Mode especially, where the enemies are more difficult to kill. Having high availability and 1-2 range also makes Lugh easy to train. He can avoid counterattacks from enemies limited to 1-range or 2-range.
Lugh's main problem is his durability. He cannot take hits on enemy phase, especially in Hard Mode. Some enemies early on can one-round him because of how low his base stats are. This problem goes away after promotion for the most part, but before then, it impedes Lugh a lot. As long as he stays out of enemy range, he can contribute on player phase, though.
Lugh's promotion is excellent. It gives him statistical bonuses across the board, including a point of movement and 4 magic. He also gains E-rank staves and +1 to his anima rank. Having E-rank staves is not amazing, but still allows Lugh to heal allies with Heal staves. +1 to anima rank is welcome, because increasing weapon ranks in The Binding Blade is difficult.
Once he has gained some levels, Lugh will be able to double enemies on average. He also receives a significant magic boost from his promotion. The magic increase coupled with his solid speed allows Lugh to one-round some enemies. He may need to use stronger tomes, but +1 to anima rank upon promotion helps with that as well.
Lugh cannot fight on enemy phase very well, because even after promotion, he is somewhat frail. This limits his contributions to chip damage and self-improvement before promotion. After promotion, he can one-round some enemies on player phase. If he uses the Aircalibur tome, for instance, he can kill enemy Wyvern Riders and Wyvern Lords in one round.
Supports can allow Lugh to fight better on enemy phase. That said, building up supports in The Binding Blade is a significant time investment. His best support partner is Raigh, because he grants Lugh full hit and avoid. They also share movement, making it more convenient to keep them in support range. Chad is a solid alternative. He grants Lugh full avoid and full crit while having similar movement. That said, Chad will most likely need to open chests if deployed, making it less convenient to keep him near Lugh. Besides, deploying Chad is only useful if a chapter requires his thief utility. Chad is not good at fighting, so deploying him only to support Lugh is questionable.
Fire Emblem Awakening
Role
Lugh is playable as a SpotPass character, released in the The Binding Blade character set. He is also present as an enemy in the second and third installments of the Smash Brethren DLC series, as well as an ally in Smash Brethren 1.

Personality and character
Lugh is a kind and optimistic child. He likes to help the other members of the army as much as possible, even if it is just by running errands or sharing food. He also tries his best to keep people in good spirits. Whenever one of his comrades is in danger, he does not hesitate to leave what he is doing and go to help them.[3] He becomes anxious at the mere idea of seeing them hurt[4] or being separated from them;[5] this could be a result of the traumatic experiences he went through in Araphen.
Family is very important for Lugh, and it is something that goes beyond blood bonds, as he considers Chad to be his brother.[6] He was truly worried about Raigh's sudden disappearance, feeling he was a burden to his brother.[7] Although he doubts his own worth in battle, he keeps fighting for what he believes in, stating he does not want to just be protected.[8] He tends to think the best of people,[9] but seems to have trouble understanding others' indirect actions or intentions.[10]
