Legends and Lies (Japanese: 伝説の真実 Truth of the legend) is Chapter 24 of Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade.

Plot

Main article: Legends and Lies/Script

After defeating Brunnya and the remains of Bern's army, Roy's forces have at last reached the Dragon Temple. Here, the Demon Dragon still attempts to fulfill Zephiel's wish of a world ruled by dragons. Instead of Idunn, Roy meets the dragon Jahn. Jahn explains that he is the last true dragon inside the temple, and that the Demon Dragon is simply a tool. Ultimately, Jahn decides to test Roy's abilities by throwing endless waves of war dragons at him, to make Roy earn the information he wants. Then, Jahn reveals that the form standing before Roy is just an illusion, and vanishes, awaiting Roy further within.

As Roy and company fight their way through the war dragons in the temple, Roy encounters Jahn's illusion six times. Over the course of these encounters, Jahn tells him of the truth behind the Demon Dragon in snippets. According to Jahn, war dragons are soulless husks made by the Demon Dragon exclusively for combat. Additionally, the Demon Dragon used to be a divine dragon, though she did not become the Demon Dragon of her own free will.

During the Scouring, the humans initially held the upper hand due to their superior numbers. Some dragons devised a plan to create the Demon Dragon, bolstering the dragons' numbers with the war dragons. The divine dragons were horrified by this plan, and fled from the other dragons. However, one divine dragon, Idunn, was too slow to escape, and was captured. The other dragons, Jahn among them, then crushed her soul, rendering her an obedient puppet, after she showed hesitation. Thus, the Demon Dragon was born.

The Demon Dragon's creation changed the tides of the war in the dragons' favor, but not for long. The humans focused their attention on the creation of dragon-slaying weapons, resulting in the eight legendary weapons. They entrusted these weapons to their strongest warriors, the Eight Legends. The great magical force of the dragons clashing against the magic of the legendary weapons resulted in an unanticipated consequence on both sides: the Ending Winter, an event where the laws of nature reversed, with night becoming day and summer becoming winter.

A further effect of the Ending Winter was that dragons became incapable of maintaining their dragon forms due to the changed environment. Dragons adapted by sealing their power into dragonstones. The new manaketes in human form were weaker than humans themselves, leading to the humans' crushing victory and the dragons' retreat. Jahn was also gravely injured in this conflict, which is why he hid in the Dragon Temple to recover until the Demon Dragon's resurrection.

Roy asks how Zephiel came to know of Idunn, prompting Jahn to speak about Hartmut, the first wielder of the Binding Blade and founder of Bern. When Hartmut and the Eight Legends went to fight the Demon Dragon, they were surprised to find a mute girl. Though she transformed into the Demon Dragon and a battle commenced, Hartmut could not bring himself to kill her, and chose to seal her with the Binding Blade's power instead.

Zephiel breaking the Demon Dragon's seal did not only free Idunn; it also unsealed the power of the Dragon Temple, allowing Jahn to finally recover from the wounds he sustained during the Scouring. He then sought out Zephiel in the hopes that he would bring the dragons' victory as Jahn desired.

Though the temple's magic empowers Jahn, Roy manages to cut him down with the aid of his allies wielding the legendary weapons. Before he reaches the Demon Dragon's chamber, Fae seeks him out, if she is alive. She fears that one day, she will be evil like the Demon Dragon too, since they are both divine dragons. Roy reassures her that she will always live in peace with humans, as she has done for years in Arcadia. After she still doubts him, Roy reveals that he wants to help the Demon Dragon as well. He does not wish to kill her, and wants to find a way to restore her soul, since she is a victim in other's schemes instead of acting of her own free will.

Strategy

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

On this map, you can only bring 10 units, and this includes Roy and Fae. Thus, it's crucial to select only your most powerful units. Be aware that the units you select for this chapter will be locked in for the next one; you won't be able to swap them out. Make thoughtful choices about which units to bring. Avoid equipping items or weapons with limited uses, as you won't have the option to reorganize them later. Characters capable of wielding legendary weapons or wyrmslayers are particularly valuable, as is Roy with his Binding Blade. However, while it might be tempting to heavily rely on Roy and his Blade, it's advisable to use it sparingly to achieve the best ending.

The map consists of seven rooms, and each contains three manaketes, with one seated on a throne. Roy needs to seize each throne. To speed up this chapter, consider rescuing Roy after he's seized each throne. Note that after a throne is seized, a manakete will spawn in the previously cleared room. Reinforcements are infinite, so it is best to keep moving.

Mounted units are especially useful in this chapter due to their superior movement, making it easier to evade the reinforcements. The boss, Jahn, might appear threatening, but his speed is low. Engage him with a unit that can double him with an effective weapon. The remaining enemies on the map may pose a challenge without the right weapons. However, since they can only attack from a distance of one, engaging them from a range of two can prove effective.
