Hilda Valentine Goneril (pronounced /'hɪldə 'vælɪntaɪn 'gɑnəɹɪl/[key]; Japanese: ヒルダ=ヴァレンティン=ゴネリル Hilda Valentin Goneril) is a playable character appearing in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. She is a student at the Officers Academy and a member of the Golden Deer.
Biography
Hilda is the daughter of Duke Goneril, head of House Goneril in the Leicester Alliance, in charge of guarding Fódlan's Locket from any possible Almyran invasions ever since its construction in Imperial Year 1101. She has an older brother, Holst, who is known to be a great warrior. Hilda is quite lazy, asking to not be put into battle or passing her chores off to others. Despite this, she is a gifted artisan, making all sorts of fashionable accessories. In 1180, she enrolls in the Officers Academy at the Garreg Mach Monastery and joins the Golden Deer, studying and fighting alongside them.
After the timeskip, if Hilda is a member of Byleth's class on non-Crimson Flower routes, she returns to Garreg Mach Monastery on the day of the millennium festival and accompanies them throughout the war. In the Verdant Wind route in particular, Hilda unofficially becomes a retainer of sorts to Claude, assisting him with convincing the Knights of Seiros to join forces with the Alliance army opposing the Adrestian Empire, gathering supplies, and even comes up with the plan to infiltrate Adrestia's Fort Merceus by sneaking Alliance soldiers wearing Imperial uniforms. During the story, she also reports his older brother's status and whereabouts, and even gets to witness Prince Dimitri's demise at the hands of the Empire after the Battle at Gronder Field.
Should Hilda not be recruited on the Azure Moon route, she remains at Claude's side and fights alongside him in the Battle at Gronder on Leicester's side, only to be forced to retreat. She reappears later on at Derdriu alongside Judith, fighting against Lord Arundel and his Adrestian forces as they attempt to take over the Alliance's capital and slay Claude. On the Crimson Flower route, Hilda, together with Claude, a non-recruited Lysithea and Nader defend Derdriu from Edelgard and the Black Eagle Strike Force, where she can be circumvented or slain at the player's discretion. Hilda makes no appearances in the story on the Silver Snow route, but it is most likely she is one of the many casualties of the Battle at Gronder.

Analysis
This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Hilda is a physically-oriented unit, serving as one of the dedicated frontliners of the team. She has a decent HP and strength base, reinforcing her role as a frontline unit. She also has excellent growths in speed and charm. On the downside, she has low bases and growths in dexterity, luck, magic, defense, and resistance. Her low dexterity, in particular, can hinder the accuracy of Hilda's attacks, especially when wielding Axes, one of the weapon types she has a natural affinity towards. Thankfully, this can be remedied by having Hilda master the Archer class early on for the ability Hit +20. Hilda's personal skill, Advocate, grants an extra 3 attack for all male units adjacent to her, which synergizes well with skills such as Sylvain's Philanderer. She also possesses a budding talent in Heavy Armor, which, when unlocked, will grant her Seal Speed, along with granting her a boon in Heavy Armor. As such, she can pursue the Armored Knight and Fortress Knight classes easily, improving her bulk at the expense of her otherwise excellent speed growth. It should be noted that Hilda is one of the few rare units to learn Bolting. The other two units who also learn Bolting are Manuela (who has a bane in Reason) and Constance (who is paid DLC). However, Hilda does not make efficient use of the spell due to her low base and growth in magic unless heavily invested in magic-based classes.
Hilda possesses the minor Crest of Goneril, giving her a 30% chance of disabling an enemy's counterattack when using combat arts. Her crest allows her to utilize the exclusive combat art of Freikugel, Apocalyptic Flame. Apocalyptic Flame inflicts a -5 strength debuff on enemies hit, which in turn causes their attack speed to drop by 1 temporarily.
One of Hilda's best and straightforward promotion paths is starting from Fighter, to Brigand, master the class for Death Blow, and ending at Warrior, in order to solidify her as a stellar combat unit. However, it is worth noting that five movement is unideal in the late-game for a class that specializes in the generally melee range axes. Alternatively, suppose the player wants to build Hilda as a mobile and agile dodgetank. In that case, they can promote her to a Soldier, then to a Pegasus Knight, master the class for Darting Blow, then end in Falcon Knight, all while training her Flying rank to gain Alert Stance+. One can alternatively have Hilda choose Wyvern Lord instead of Falcon Knight for Axefaire and slightly more strength while retaining the mobility of flying classes. However, this comes at the cost of being slightly slower than she would as a Falcon Knight. While both flying classes benefit from having Canto built-in, they also limit Hilda's pool of equippable battalions. The inability to equip strong battalions is something Hilda already struggles with due to her bane in Authority. Lastly, should Hilda have been trained previously in the Armored and Fortress Knight classes, Great Knight can also become another viable end class for her. With Great Knight, Hilda sacrifices some defensive prowess for more mobility, access to Canto and Lancefaire.
Out-of-House Performance
When recruited outside the Golden Deer, Hilda will have received training in lances and axes. Her recruitment requirements are very high on the Blue Lions route, demanding a high level in Charm and axes. The requirements can be lowered to a somewhat more manageable 12 Charm and D in Axes if Byleth obtains a B support with Hilda.
On the other hand, if Byleth is a Black Eagle, Hilda cannot be recruited until chapter 12, the final chapter before Part II. She can only be recruited if the player sides with the Church instead of Edelgard. Before then, the player can only interact and build support with her via monastery activities, and on her birthday, via tea time. The player cannot return lost items or give her gifts, resulting in the ability to raise Hilda's support with the player being minimal. These limitations make it more challenging to lower her stringent recruitment requirements before the end of Part I. The struggle is further exacerbated by the fact that the player only has two weeks of exploration before the main map of chapter 12. Considering all this, Hilda is much more demanding to recruit on the Silver Snow route than the Azure Moon route.

Endings
Hilda, Free Spirit (single ending)
After the war, Hilda set politics aside and focused on what she enjoyed most: crafting fashionable accessories. Her designs quickly achieved widespread popularity. With the help of her brother, Hilda then created the first artisan academy in Fódlan, where she served as both professor and headmaster.
Byleth, Wandering Flame/Ruler of Dawn & Hilda, Free Spirit (Silver Snow, Verdant Wind)
Byleth announced his marriage to Hilda shortly after becoming ruler of the United Kingdom of Fódlan. As queen, Hilda rarely took part in politics herself, but she nevertheless contributed greatly to the restoration of Fódlan by recommending exceptional people to influential positions. Her hobby of creating fashionable accessories also bore fruit, as her designs achieved widespread popularity, and she created the first artisan academy in Fódlan. The school produced many talented craftsmen, one of whom created a statue that expertly captured the king's delight at receiving the gift of a bracelet from the queen.
Byleth, Guardian of Order & Hilda, Free Spirit (Azure Moon)
Byleth announced his marriage to Hilda shortly after being named archbishop of the Church of Seiros. Hilda rarely involved herself with the church, but nevertheless contributed greatly to its restoration by recommending exceptional people to influential positions. Her hobby of creating fashionable accessories also bore fruit, as her designs achieved widespread popularity, and she started an artisan academy at Garreg Mach. The school produced many talented craftsmen, one of whom created a statue that expertly captured the archbishop's delight at receiving the gift of a bracelet from his wife.
Byleth, Wings of the Hegemon & Hilda, Free Spirit (Crimson Flower, unused in the final game)
Almost immediately after Byleth and Hilda finished their gorgeous wedding ceremony, the struggle against those who slither in the dark began in earnest. They fought tirelessly to bring lasting peace to Fódlan, and afterward retired from the Imperial army to Goneril territory. Hilda's hobby of creating fashionable accessories bore fruit, and she leveraged her husband's reputation as a hero to create the first artisan academy in Fódlan. The school produced many talented craftsmen, one of whom created a statue that expertly captured the hero's delight at receiving the gift of a bracelet from his wife.
Claude, King of Unification & Hilda, Free Spirit
Entrusting the future of Fódlan to his friends, Claude left for Almyra to take his place as heir to the throne. His family saw that he had grown strong and allowed him to claim his birthright. When he became king several years later, he made the surprise announcement that he would make Hilda his queen. Having studied with her brother to prepare for this moment, Hilda demonstrated an uncanny talent for diplomacy, and greatly contributed to establishing friendly relations between Fódlan and Almyra. The presence of a Fódlan-born queen for two consecutive generations did much to alter Almyran values.
Ferdinand, Noblest of Nobles & Hilda, Free Spirit
After becoming the new Duke Aegir, Ferdinand married Hilda, the daughter of Duke Goneril. The marriage was warmly received by the people, with high expectations placed on them as they set about restoring the territory. Hilda rarely took part in politics herself, but she still contributed greatly by recommending exceptional people to influential positions. Her hobby of creating fashionable accessories also bore fruit, as her designs achieved widespread popularity, and she created the first artisan academy in Fódlan. The school produced many talented craftsmen, including Ferdinand himself, who was said to craft handmade trinkets for his wife.
Caspar, Roaming Instigator & Hilda, Free Spirit
Caspar and Hilda, under no pressure to inherit any noble titles, spent the early years of peace after the war traveling. They journeyed to every corner of Fódlan, and even ventured abroad now and again. Caspar's antics caused endless entertainment for Hilda, who loved to stand by and watch him fight or squirm his way out of trouble. Eventually, their free-spirited adventure was called to an end by Hilda's brother, Holst, who offered Caspar a position as a knight in service of House Goneril. Caspar accepted, and before long, he and Hilda were married. The couple raised many children, and were said to have a notoriously lively household.
Lorenz, Noble of the Red Rose & Hilda, Free Spirit
As the new head of House Gloucester, Lorenz first worked to restore his own territory, and then expanded his vision to include reforms for all Fódlan. At the height of his storied political career, he announced his marriage to Hilda, the only daughter of Duke Goneril. After the recovery effort, at Hilda's behest, the pair established artisan academies all over Fódlan. The schools quickly flourished, invigorating interest in the arts as well as trade with foreign lands. After many years of success and prosperity, the students of the first of these academies crafted a bronze statue of the founding couple to honor their achievement. The statue stands to this day.
Raphael, Beast of Leicester & Hilda, Free Spirit
Raphael returned to his hometown, where he served his liege lord as a knight for a time. Later, he gave it up to help manage the inn that his family had opened up during his time away. One day, to the great joy of Raphael's sister, Maya, Hilda came to visit. Maya had always treasured the necklace Hilda had made for her. Moved by this, Hilda gave Maya a new gift of a hair band, which inspired Maya to suggest that Raphael convert the inn into an accessory shop. Hilda decided to stay and help out, and eventually became the shop's proprietor and chief artisan. She moved in with Raphael, and the two spent their lives happily dealing in fashionable accessories.
Ignatz, Worldly Artist & Hilda, Free Spirit
After Hilda returned home, her fashionable accessories achieved widespread popularity, leading her to create the first artisan academy in Fódlan. While shopping for art supplies, she had a chance reunion with Ignatz, who had persuaded his family to allow him to travel the world as an artist. Hilda invited Ignatz to teach at her school, and as she and the students became enchanted by the landscapes and portraits of all he had seen in his travels, the two gradually fell in love. Their romance birthed a new style that inspired artists in Fódlan for generations.
Marianne, Survivor of the Curse & Hilda, Free Spirit
After returning to their respective homes, Hilda and Marianne stayed in touch and deepened their friendship through letters. Hilda informed Marianne that her passion for crafting fashionable accessories had given her the idea to start an artisan academy, and in response, Marianne pledged the financial support of the house of Margrave Edmund. Soon, artisan schools began to appear all over Fódlan, producing talented craftsmen and high-quality trade goods, which contributed greatly to the prosperity of Fódlan. The accessories sent to Marianne personally by Hilda became some of the most highly valued treasures in history.
Hilda, Free Spirit & Seteth, Ally of the Archbishop/Heir of Purpose
After the war, Seteth dedicated himself to the restoration of the church. He continued to write fables for children in his spare time, but became dissatisfied with the hobby due to a lack of quality illustrations for his work. When Hilda learned of this, she jumped at the chance to visit Garreg Mach and illustrate some of Seteth's newer stories for him. The completed fables were distributed far and wide, and the children who loved them eventually passed the famous and beloved works on to their own children and grandchildren.
Hilda, Free Spirit & Cyril, Limitless Potential
Hilda returned to her territory, and founded the first artisan academy in Fódlan. Years later, as the successful headmaster of that school, she journeyed to Garreg Mach to make a donation to the church. There she encountered Cyril, who had graduated from the Officers Academy and joined the Knights of Seiros. When each saw how much the other had grown and matured, a mutual attraction between them blossomed naturally into love. Cyril eventually left the church to become a knight of House Goneril, at the invitation of Hilda's brother, Holst. As Holst's new brother-in-law, Cyril provided essential aid in negotiations with House Goneril's Almyran neighbors.
Hilda, Free Spirit & Balthus, King of Grappling
Most of Balthus's debts vanished in the chaos after the war, and those few that remained were paid off with what he had earned in the fighting. Free to do as he pleased, he sought out Hilda, and the two of them went on an adventure around the world. Crossing Fódlan's Throat, they journeyed through and beyond Almyra, where they are said to have found a kingdom of gold in the far east. Though the details of their adventure are largely lost, one anecdote firmly remains. To win Holst's blessing to take his sister out of Fódlan, Balthus had to beat him in a duel.

Hilda Valentine Goneril |
Full name, known by just Hilda in most menus. Hilda is a Germanic name derived from the Old Norse word "hildr", meaning "battle".[3] Valentine is a name derived from the Latin word "Valentinus", meaning "healthy" (and also the name of a saint). Goneril is the name of the eldest daughter of King Lear in William Shakespeare's play King Lear. Other characters from Leicester also have surnames derived from the names of King Lear characters. |
