Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
As many of the characters will say, the central hill is the position to take to win the battle. Not only is the ballista useful for chipping away at approaching enemies, but the position will also draw a majority of the other army's attentions, allowing you to score the most kills if your units are capable.
It is highly advised to have both the Stride and Assault Troop gambits. At best, Stride will let 5 of your units rush to the center within the first turn, minimizing hits from Ashe's ballista. It may be tempting to split your army to deal with Ignatz's squad on the right, considering that Stride won't hit everyone in your party. The problem is it will take far too long to regroup in the middle due to the forest terrain, and by that point, you'll be dealing with both the Blue Lions and Golden Deer's main damage damage dealers. In fact, having some units arrive slightly later to the center due to not being Stride-boosted is ideal, as Ingrid's pegasus squad will most likely go for them. Having your units spaced such that your premier archers like Bernadetta arrive late to shoot down Ingrid will make her simple.
After taking the center, Lorenz will probably be charging for the central hill with units such as Ignatz, Hilda, and the unnamed cavalry in tow. Claude himself will remain stationary, alongside the 3 archers in the back. While Lorenz isn't very threatening, Hilda is extremely dangerous, easily capable of doubling and killing anyone on Maddening if she gets to attack with her Darting Blow. Making use of Curved Shot, Mire, and Thoron to outrange her Short Axe is the best way to deal with her.
Lysithea, Marianne, Raphael, and Leonie will most likely head over to engage Dimitri's army, and will most likely get demolished by Dedue, Dimitri, and Annette. While this is beneficial on Normal and Hard, Maddening's threshold for the "morale stat boost" is 3 units, meaning the Blue Lions are almost guaranteed +2 to most of their stats, and will probably trigger the boost a second time after defeating 2 more Alliance units. Mercedes will also be using Physic to keep her house healthy, so any chip damage the Alliance can get off is practically negated. It's important to note that Dedue and Dimitri are almost inseparable, and Dedue will go wherever Dimitri goes.
The best way to deal with Dimitri and his forces is to hold the center, as the Blue Lions will crowd the wooden walkways, allowing for your gambits such as Assault Troop to weaken many of them. Dedue can be dealt with easily by Hubert or Dorothea (any unit with adequate axe mastery for Helm Splitter will work too, but on Maddening it will probably take several such attacks to bring him down, and you do not want to deal with his follow up attacks). Once Dimitri's main forces are defeated, cleaning up his units is easy enough. Mercedes is almost not a threat (Maddening still makes Nosferatu hit like a truck this early on), and Felix, as the lone wolf he is, won't move to support Dimitri unless provoked, meaning he can be dealt with via ranged weapons. After grabbing the chest, Claude can be reached and dealt with in one turn via Stride's second usage.
