Gunter (Japanese: ギュンター Gunther) is a character in Fire Emblem Fates. He is a Great Knight well versed in battle. He serves Corrin, and also tutored Corrin in combat. Gunter is a playable character in the Conquest and Revelation campaign.
Fire Emblem Fates
Role
Prior to the events of the game, Garon offered Gunter dragon's blood as long as he swore loyalty to him. Gunter, however, did not want to abandon his wife, child, and home, and refused.[2] This enraged Garon, causing him to have Gunter's wife and child killed, along with the rest of the people from Gunter's town. After his family was killed, Gunter vowed to get revenge on Nohr and Garon. He helped raise Corrin to use them against Garon, although he eventually developed genuine affection for the young child.[3]
Gunter is Corrin's fighting instructor, and accompanies Corrin if they side with Nohr or neither nation.
Gunter accompanies Corrin on his first handful of assignments and gives advice on battle. Before the route choice Gunter is attacked by Hans and falls down the Bottomless Canyon after a skirmish with the Hoshidan's on the border.
Birthright
Gunter is absent and presumably never rescued if Corrin chooses to side with Hoshido.
Conquest
During Conquest, Corrin and Azura recover Gunter from an unseen realm; he stays by Corrin's side for the rest of the campaign, although he is not a major story character. It is unknown if he is affected by his trip to Valla in this instance; he exhibits no symptoms of such during Corrin's journey. Gunter also appears at the end of the game, after the war is over and a peace treaty is thereafter signed between Hoshido and Nohr; Gunter crowns Xander as the new king of Nohr and lectures Elise offscreen for making a scene during the coronation.
Revelation
If Corrin sides with neither kingdom, Gunter is also recovered from the unseen realm; however, it is revealed that he is under the control of Anankos, serving as a sleeper agent during Corrin's travels. He is responsible for the death of Scarlet. After Corrin figures this out, Gunter summons Vallite forces and attacks Corrin's group. After his defeat, Gunter explains that his family and town were killed by Garon, sparking the feelings of hatred that allowed Anankos to control him. After his confession, Gunter plunges his sword into his gut in a suicide attempt, but Sakura and Elise are able to heal him. Gunter then rejoins Corrin's forces in the final battle against Anankos. After the final battle, he quietly takes his leave and is never seen again. It is said in his ending that he may have died shortly after leaving Nohr and Hoshido, or he may have found a new place to live alone until his death.

Personality and character
In typical situations, Gunter is a grounded and formal individual. He was an initially loyal knight in the service of Nohr, but later grew distrustful of the noble class of society.
After Garon murdered his family and destroyed his home Gunter was filled with hatred and patiently waited for the chance to get his revenge. His first step to revenge was turning Corrin against Garon, though through this process he ended up legitimately bonding with Corrin as a child. When Gunter was tasked with Corrin's care, Garon refused better living conditions for the child so Gunter took matters into his own hands, this included: requesting spare meal portions, reading Corrin stories at night for comfort, and fashioning a toy ball from a whip intended to be used as a punishment tool.
Gunter is a strict tutor and will hound his students until they fully grasp their tasks. He was responsible for training Jakob from street urchin to first class butler, and still critiques him in the present even though he himself has admitted Jakob has grown into his role excellently.
Supports
It should be noted that Gunter is unable to activate support conversations in the Revelation campaign, presumably due to his possession by Anankos.

Endings
Gunter, Inveterate Soldier (single ending)
Gunter disappeared soon after the war ended, never to be seen again. Scholars continue to debate if he died soon afterward, or if he found a quiet place to spend the rest of his days in contemplation.
Gunter, Inveterate Soldier & Corrin, Crux of Fate
Gunter retired and spent his days in the Nohrian countryside. There are no further records of him. Corrin was hailed as a hero, working alongside her spouse to spread peace worldwide.

Trivia
- Gunter's Japanese voice actor, Rokurō Naya, passed away before Fire Emblem Fates was even revealed.
- As a boss in Revelation, Gunter is the only enemy in Fates who possesses Dragonskin to battle the player before the ultimate form of the Yato is obtained, which reduces the effect of Dragonskin.

Corrin: Despises you? Why?
Gunter: After being honored for valor in battle, I was granted an audience with King Garon. He offered me dragon's blood; accepting would require absolute loyalty to the king. It would have meant becoming his most trusted retainer, the highest of positions. However, it also would have meant leaving my homeland, my wife, and my child. I turned him down. I wanted to live a normal life. I begged for his understanding. I will never forget his resentment...his rage." — Gunter and Corrin, Fire Emblem Fates - ↑ "Corrin: Gunter, can you hear me?
Gunter: Lord Corrin... Yes, I can hear you. Do you recall when I told you that I declined King Garon's gift? How he offered dragon's blood, but I refused? It offended him greatly. So much that he had my wife and child killed.
Corrin: ...That's horrible.
Gunter: He didn't stop there. Once my family was dead, everyone in my town was also killed.
Corrin: ...But...why?
Gunter: I ask myself that, every day. I cannot understand the minds of royals. To you all, we commoners are little more than pawns in your schemes... Or weeds to be killed on a whim.
Corrin: That's not true...
Xander: Is that how people view the royalty?
Ryoma: Such an impression would easily breed powerful resentment...
Gunter: After my family was killed, I vowed to get revenge on Nohr and on King Garon. I helped raise you just to further my own goals. I only befriended you to use you against the man who took everything from me." — Gunter, Corrin, Xander, and Ryoma, Fire Emblem Fates - ↑ http://www.behindthename.com/name/gunter
