By gods...the waterfall IS on fire!

Burning Falls (Japanese: 燃える滝 Burning Waterfall) is the twenty-first chapter of the Birthright campaign in Fire Emblem Fates. In this chapter, Corrin and their army follow a map given to them by the Rainbow Sage to a waterfall that's been burning for hundreds of years, hoping to traverse the area in hopes of reaching the Nohrian capital quicker.

Plot

Main article: Burning Falls/Script

Inside the throne room at Castle Krakenberg, Garon has noted Iago's latest failure, to which he states that he'll have to dispose of him soon; he then reveals that Plan B will spring into action soon, and wants to see the look on Corrin's face when it does. Cutting to the throne room's door outside the room, we witness Elise having listened in on Garon's musings and expresses disappontment at what she heard; Xander appears on the scene and asks Elise what she's doing in the area, prompting a shocked reaction from Elise followed by Xander concluding that Elise was spying on Garon. Xander reveals that Garon would not be pleased if he found out someone was spying on him and even his children would face some unpleasant consequences should it happen; Elise begins to cry and reveals that she doesn't know what to do, revealing that Corrin and Leo are gone and Camilla is so depressed that she hardly ever leaves her quarters, then asking Xander what's happened to their family and wondering how things could go back to the way they were before, to which Xander asks Elise not to worry and states that everything will go back to normal once the war is over. Elise asks Xander if he's sure of what he just said, to which Xander states that he can fight in the face of heartache and that they must all believe that what they're doing is for the greater good, that they can trust in their cause and fight with what they have.

We cut to aboard a boat, to which Ryoma reveals that they had to take the long way around but that they've finally reached their destination, telling Corrin that this ferry is taking them back to their childhood home, to which Corrin states that they are having a hard time believing that what's going on is actually happening; Takumi asks Corrin not to get nostalgic and states that there's nowhere to hide once they're off the boat, to which Corrin states that the group should prepare for battle at once and there won't be any opportunity to rest once they've docked. Ryoma states that he needs to brief Corrin on a message he received from Yukimura before boarding the ferry, who had sent a young pegasus rider from the Bottomless Canyon to find them, with both rider and steed exhausted on arrival and Sakura tending to them as they speak; Ryoma reveals that the message is bad news--while the royal troops are holding the line back in Hoshido, soldiers from Mokushu have joined Nohr in attacking Hoshido and that it's only a matter of time before their defenses are breached. After a shocked reaction from Corrin, Ryoma states that he has even worse news--Yukimura's message is at least several weeks old, and Ryoma states that he wouldn't be surprised if the situation has deteriorated even further in those several weeks; Corrin deduces that they might not have much time left, they have to defeat Garon and end the war before Castle Shirasagi falls. Corrin asks how much time remains until they reach their destination, to which Ryoma states that it will take a day or two as the captain has indicated they'll need to go far upstream to reach a docking point; Takumi states that the map the Rainbow Sage gave them indicates that they're right across from their destination and asks why they can't go straight there, to which Ryoma states that the captain didn't indicate that they had any options. Takumi reveals a port marked Demon's Fall is on the map, to which Ryoma asks Takumi to show him; Corrin reveals that the information in question is written very faintly on the map and asks Ryoma if he's heard of the area, to which Ryoma confirms but states that he believed it to be merely a legend--it's said to be a waterfall made of fire, something that sounds too fantastical to be true. Corrin states that they should check out Demon's Fall as it could save them a few precious days, to which Takumi reveals that they're coming up on a fork in the river; Ryoma states that Demon's Fall is worth a shot and asks Corrin what they think, to which Corrin states that they agree and that they need to act quickly or there might not even be a Hoshido to save. Corrin states that the group is ready to take on anything they might find at Demon's Fall; Ryoma states that he'll inform the captain of their decision.

We cut to what appears to be a volcanic battlefield where Corrin, Ryoma, Jakob, and Azura have already gathered, to which Ryoma states that the waterfall really is on fire; Jakob states that he can explain the phenomenon of Demon's Fall, revealing that there is a massive reservoir of oil nearby that has mixed with the water, and the river was set aflame hundreds of years ago. Jakob doesn't know the exact cause of why the river's on fire--possibilities include a lightning strike or an accident--but the river's been burning for hundreds of years; all Nohrians have avoided Demon's Fall for obvious reasons, thus there isn't a natural path to be followed. Ryoma then asks Corrin if they have seen a nearby statue, then states that he feels the presence of two Dragon Veins aside it, to which Jakob states that there is also a hostile presence in the area; preparations take place at this point, with the battle beginning once preparations are complete.

Once the battle ends, we find Corrin, Felicia, Jakob, Ryoma, Azura, and Takumi gathered around where the boss had stood, when the ground starts shaking; Corrin deduces the shaking to be another of Iago's traps, after which Ryoma asks Corrin to take a look at the falls, to which part of them disappear to reveal the entry to a cavern, to which Corrin states didn't appear to be there before. Felicia and Jakob take a look at the cavern, then reveal it to be full of fresh air coming from a passageway leading directly to Windmire, the Nohrian capital--Jakob states he had heard rumors of such a passageway, but didn't think them to be actually true; Ryoma states that this passage would be a massive shortcut with Jakob stating that he doesn't see why a pathway would lead to this area. Ryoma deduces that the Rainbow Sage knew about this area, to which Sakura suggests that the Rainbow Sage built the path himself; Takumi wonders why the Rainbow Sage didn't tell the group directly as it would have saved a lot of trouble and guesswork, to which Hinoka states that the Rainbow Sage gave the group a hand-drawn map and doesn't know what more they would have expected from him. Takumi states that the Rainbow Sage may have known about the group's "rat problem", envisioning the traitor revealing the group's exact route to the Nohrians; Corrin asks Takumi if he truly believes there's a spy among the group, to which Takumi states he hopes there isn't but that they haven't had the best luck thus far. Ryoma states that there's currently no time to debate about the "rat problem", as they're about to enter Nohr proper and the current time calls for unity rather than division; Corrin states that they may have to face off against Xander and Camilla soon, but they are prepared to fight them if they have to, vowing that they're coming for Garon.

Summary

Making their way out of Fort Dragonfall, the group continues onward. Thanks to a map from the Rainbow Sage, they are able to reach a mythical destination.

Despite how it may appear, the pair of Dragon Veins in front of each statue is not random. Each statue is holding an orb in one of their hands, serving as a marker to which Dragon Vein will produce the bridge.
