Journey Begins (Japanese: 旅立ちの刻 Moment of Departure) is the third chapter of Fire Emblem Fates. During this chapter Corrin is assigned a test by Garon to gain forgiveness, but it goes awry when a retainer of Garon's provokes an attack on the Hoshidians.

Corrin and Elise approach Garon to ask for his forgiveness following the incident with the Hoshidan prisoners. They overhear him having a conversation with someone, but the throne room is empty save him. Garon agrees to forgive Corrin if they inspect an abandoned fortress on the border between Hoshido and Nohr. Camilla wishes to accompany them, but Garon's top adviser Iago refuses to allow it, stating that it is a test for Corrin alone. Garon assigns Hans, a former criminal who Xander arrested years ago and currently distrusts, to protect Corrin, and they set out for the border.

At the Bottomless Canyon, Corrin and their party discovers Hoshidan soldiers have occupied the fortress. Corrin prepares to leave peacefully, but Hans defies their orders and attacks, provoking a battle.

After the battle, Hoshidan reinforcements led by Saizo and Kagero appear. Corrin is rescued by their siblings, and flees. They and Gunter reach the bridge leading out of the Canyon ahead of Felicia/Jakob, but Hans ambushes them and knocks Gunter off the bridge and into the Canyon. An enraged Corrin confronts Hans, who claims he was only following Garon's orders before fleeing. Ganglari takes a life of its own and throws Corrin into the Canyon, but they are rescued by Lilith. Lilith reveals that she is an Astral Dragon who chose to serve them after they nursed her back to health when she broke her wing. Lilith brings Corrin to a pocket dimension, where she explains that she used up a lot of energy in her transformation, forcing her to remain in her dragon form. After Corrin rests in the Private Quarters, they return to the Canyon, where Rinkah ambushes and captures Corrin.


As punishment for disobeying orders, Corrin must go to the Hoshidan border to scout an abandoned fort. For all intents, it should be a simple mission.

There are no event tiles during the events of the chapter. When returning to the area for skirmishes in Birthright and Revelation, the following event tiles appear:

  • Column 6, row 5: Southwest corner of the northwestern island
  • Column 15, row 12: Two squares west, two squares north of the old gate

Dragon Vein data

South of the player's starting position, there are two Dragon Veins that create stone bridges across the canyon (column 9, row 13; column 11, row 9). These allow the player to cross the map without facing an entrenched group of Hoshidans.

This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody.

Hans is a valuable ally for this map. He is kind enough to show you what happens if you are too reckless with your strategy, and even goes so far as to get himself hurt to teach you.

For your first turn, you should send Corrin with Gunter in Tag Team to block the bridge. They should have no trouble defeating the first two Samurai and taking the experience for themselves. Afterwards, head south to avoid the Hoshidan encampment on the north bridge. Use the Dragon Vein to make your way across. Be aware that 2 or 3 Sky Knights will attack when you reach Omozu's group. If you are feeling brave, you can lure a couple of the entrenched Archers away from the fort to the north and kill them, and then wipe out the rest of them for more experience.
