“ | Once again, here I am. Dragged to some horrible place with no explanation. *sigh* Is it my destiny to forever be tossed aside, a stranger to all lands? Maybe the Nohrians will accept me. Or maybe this is where I die... Well, it is out of my control. If only I were a Hoshidan by birth. I knew if and when the war began, I would be among the first casualties. At least in the end... Hm? Is that... a Dragon Vein I sense? Ah, I do recall hearing that this fort was built from the remains of a dark dragon. Perhaps it can be used to attack those within the fort... | ” | — Azura, confused over her fate before sensing something |

Another Trial (Japanese: 再びの試練 Another Test) is the ninth chapter of the Conquest campaign in Fire Emblem Fates. In this chapter, Garon has tasked Corrin into heading toward Notre Sagesse in order to conquer the island in the name of Nohr; the first step for Corrin and his/her army is to get through the Hoshidan siege of Fort Dragonfall. As it turns out, the Hoshidans are also holding captive a princess of theirs whose supposed Nohrian heritage appears to have caught up to her.

Another Trial/Script
At Castle Krakenburg, Garon notes that Corrin has returned, having carried out his order in an alarmingly competent fashion and stating that he'll have to give him/her a truly agonizing mission; Garon then hears the door knocking and asks the knocker to enter, to which Iago does so. Iago tells Garon what he already knew before revealing that Corrin managed to quell the rebellion without sacrificing a single life and thus has requested an audience with him, with Iago asking Garon what to tell Corrin; Garon tells Iago to tell Corrin that he has received the message and will be there momentarily, to which Iago tells Garon to consider the task done.
We cut to the castle's throne room, where Garon, his children, and Iago have gathered, to which Corrin tells Garon that he/she has returned; Garon states that Iago told him of Corrin's feat and what he/she did is no small accomplishment, and as such states that Corrin is welcomed back into the royal family, after which Corrin and Xander start to celebrate. Right as the celebration starts, Iago tells Garon that his sources tell him that Corrin did not carry out his/her mission alone, prompting a puzzled reaction from Corrin as well as Xander snapping back at Iago; Garon asks Corrin if he/she really not face the Ice Tribe alone, to which Corrin confirms--stating that he/she set out on his/her own as ordered, but ran into trouble, after which Felicia, Silas, and Elise rushed in to help, to which Corrin apologizes for defying Garon in that regard and asking him for forgiveness. As Garon and Iago contemplate killing Corrin for disobeying Garon's exact orders, Elise steps in and states that won't happen--Corrin never asked for help, they did that on their own, and if they want to kill Corrin, they'll have to kill Elise as well; as Corrin tells Elise that he/she isn't worth dying for, Xander steps in and tells Garon that if he punishes anyone, to punish him--he was the one who told the others to pitch in, and if anyone dies for this, it is to be him and him alone. Garon states that he has no intention of harming any of his children, and since Corrin did accomplish his/her mission, he'll let this incident pass, to which Iago gives a shocked reaction and Corrin thanks both Garon and Xander; Garon decides to assign Corrin another mission, this time to capture Notre Sagesse and bring it under Nohrian rule. Garon states that, even now, Notre Sagesse is teeming with Hoshidan soldiers, and that the Hoshidans are taking steps to topple Nohr and all they hold dear; stating that such bad seeds must not be allowed to take root, Garon asks Corrin to head to Notre Sagesse immediately and eradicate any Hoshidans he/she runs into along the way, to which Corrin accepts.
A short time later, outside the throne room, Corrin starts to bid farewell to Xander, Camilla, and Leo, to which Xander wishes him/her good luck; Camilla states that she'd go with Corrin, but she's been tasked with a mission of her own, and states that she wishes there was something she could do to help. Corrin tells Camilla not to worry, asking Elise if they'll be fine on their own, to which Elise confirms; Leo expresses worry at the situation, after which Elise and Leo start to argue and Corrin finds himself/herself unable to stop it. After Elise calls Xander in to attempt to stop the argument, Xander tells Corrin that the mysterious Rainbow Sage lives in Notre Sagesse, grants divine powers to those he deems worthy, and to seek him if he/she has the courage; Corrin asks Xander how he knows about this, to which it is revealed both Garon and Xander have each visited the Rainbow Sage and been gifted his power. Xander states that Corrin will have to face severe trials before meeting the Rainbow Sage, and tells Corrin to be prepared if he/she does go out to seek the sage; Corrin tells Xander that he/she must become as strong as possible so that he/she can end this war once and for all, stating that he/she has no choice but to seek out the Rainbow Sage and face the trials. At this point, Xander, Camilla, and Leo bid Corrin farewell.
We cut to Fort Dragonfall, to which Corrin notes the size of the area and asking Silas if they're really supposed to pass through the area, to which Silas confirms--the road to the port is on the other side; Corrin notes that Fort Dragonfall looks like a gigantic sleeping dragon, to which Elise reveals the fort is a big, powerful dragon that died a long time ago and its remains eventually became this fort. Silas reveals that the fort is now occupied by the Hoshidan army, and they'll have to fight them if they want to get through to the port; Corrin notes that fate is cruel but that they have no choice, they must get to Notre Sagesse in order to complete the mission and find the Rainbow Sage--then notes that they'd have to face the Hoshidan army eventually and gathers his/her courage in order to do so. Silas asks that they prepare for battle before they're spotted; preparations take place at this point.
Once preparations are finished, a woman standing outside the fort named Nyx states that she might have known the Hoshidan army would be in the area, mistaking her for a young girl and wanting to take her into custody; Nyx states that the concept makes her sick and that's why she usually chooses to remain hidden from the ignorant masses. Further into the fort, we witness Azura state that, once again, she's been dragged into some horrible place without explaination, wondering if it's her destiny to forever be tossed aside as a stranger to all lands, then asks herself if the Nohrians will accept her or if this is where she dies; Azura states that things are out of her control and laments not being Hoshidan by birth, stating that she knew she'd be one of the first casualties if and when the war began. Azura then senses the map's lone Dragon Vein, then states that she recalls that the fort was built from the remains of a dark dragon, and that it could perhaps be used to attack those within the fort. The battle begins at this point.
Should Corrin speak to Nyx, he/she asks her what she's doing in the area and that she doesn't look like a Hoshidan soldier; Corrin tells Nyx it's dangerous in the area, that his/her army will protect her if she comes to them, and that her family must be worried sick. Nyx states that she's not a young lady and she neither desires nor requires the army's protection, asking Corrin to leave before she curses him/her into oblivion; Corrin notes that Nyx looks to be around Elise's age, to which Nyx states appearances can be deceiving--her situation is beyond Corrin's ability to comprehend. Nyx states that all she wants is to live in solitude and to avoid the harsh gaze of the world around her, asking if that's too much to ask; Corrin asks Nyx if she's alone and if she has a family, to which Nyx states that her family left a long time ago, frightened of her and her abilities and thinking her to be strange. As Corrin and Nyx continue to talk about Nyx's situation, Corrin tells Nyx that she can't evade the Hoshidan army by herself and thus she needs the army--Corrin states that he/she knows what it's like to feel lost and alone, stating it to be no way to live, and reveals that if his/her friends and family hadn't come to their aid, he/she wouldn't be alive as they speak; as Corrin again asks Nyx to join his/her cause, he/she again brings up Nyx's age, to which she states that she's much older than she appears, then contemplates the advantages of joining the army and decides to do so. As Nyx's colors change to indicate she is now playable at this point, she points out that the nearby wall has a weak spot and it should break if attacked, stating it to be knowledge helpful if they are to prevail over the Hoshidan army.
Once the battle ends, Azura tells Corrin that it's nice to see him/her again, after which Corrin asks Azura what she's doing in Nohr, then backtracks and instead asks why the Hoshidans captured her as he/she thought they were her allies; Azura states that everything changed when the war started, as the Hoshidans wanted her banished after Corrin, being a prince/princess of Hoshido, sided with Nohr, Hoshidan consensus was that nobody with Nohrian ties could be trusted--and since she was taken from Nohr as a child, she bore the brunt of these wild suspicions. Azura states that Ryoma and the others stood up for her and tried their best to protect her, but one day a group of Hoshidan soldiers captured her and brought her to this area--and if Corrin hadn't come along, she can't imagine what would have become of her; as Azura thanks Corrin and states she owes him/her her life, Corrin states that it's his/her fault that she was caught up in this mess, that it's not fair that she was torn from her home again on his/her account. Azura states that this isn't really Corrin's fault, as when a war starts, it's only natural to distrust the enemy and she always knew something like this would happen if Hoshido and Nohr went to war; Corrin states that he/she still apologizes for the part he/she played in Azura's misfortune. Azura asks Corrin, if it's not too much of a burden, that she was hoping that she can join his/her cause, and that perhaps their powers combined could end this senseless war; Corrin accepts, stating that he/she would be honored to have Azura at his/her side--she was a valued friend during his/her short time in Hoshido, and is happy to return the favor. As Azura contemplates the next thing she wants to talk to Corrin about, Elise appears on the scene and tells him/her that they're ready to leave the area, to which Corrin tells her that they'll leave momentarily; Elise asks Corrin who he/she is talking to, to which Corrin introduces Azura to Elise and reveals part of her backstory. As Elise and Azura begin an exchange of apparent newfound sisterhood, Corrin at one point starts to think that Azura was about to state that she and Elise aren't really sisters, then chalks this thought up to his/her imagination.
Summary

Reinforcements
- After entering the boss's chamber or the hall east of it (columns 20-25, rows 6-9)
- 2 Spear Fighters with Iron Naginatas*/Steel Naginatas* from the northern stairs
- 1 Spear Fighter with a Dual Naginata from the northern stairs (Hard/Lunatic only)
- 1 Spear Fighter with a Bolt Naginata from the northern stairs (Lunatic only)
- 1 Archer with a Steel Yumi from the southeastern stairs (Lunatic only)
- 2 Archers with Iron Yumis from the southeastern stairs
- 2 Samurai from the southwestern stairs (Lunatic only)
- Blocking a single stairway will not also block all the reinforcements that appear around it. For example, on Normal mode, placing a unit on the stairs the Spear Fighters come from will not keep them from spawning, as they appear from one space to its left and one space below respectively. Placing units on those tiles alongside placing a unit on the stairs, however, can stop said reinforcements from appearing. The same can be said for the Archer and Samurai stairs as well.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
Azura will start the chapter off separated from the rest of your units in the bottom right corner of the map, unarmed. Have her stealthily avoid the patrolling Samurai, make her way to the chest to grab her Brass Naginata, then head for the Dragon Vein. Wait to trigger it until turn 7, when the patrolling Samurai is inside the area of effect. If she hasn't grinded in Chapter 5, said Samurai can be finished off after weakening to gain some much-needed experience.
Meanwhile, the rest of your units start on the west side of the fortress. It may be tempting to run in screaming through the front gates, but that "strategy" isn't conducive to the survival of your units. Instead, send Corrin and Jakob to the south to recruit Nyx. Nyx is another Dark Mage with much better Magic, Speed, and weapon level than Odin, but he is far bulkier than she is. Send everyone else to the north to break through the weakened wall. Watch out for the Shrine Maiden with the Enfeeble staff, as she loves to cripple your units. Fortunately, she doesn't move, so she won't start healing people when you dump acid on their heads. The Archers to the west aren't the brightest, and will attack you one at a time once you get into their range. The Spear Fighters, on the other hand, will gang up on you, so watch out.
Once you've cleaned up the western enemies, you can start working your way east. When you approach Haitaka's chamber, a bunch of enemy reinforcements will trigger, so watch out. You can stop them by parking yourself on and around the three stair tiles, or you can use the chokepoints to fight them off if you so desire. Once that's taken care of, it's time to defeat Haitaka and his goons. One guy has a Shining Bow, meaning he can deal severe damage to Effie. To circumvent this, have Effie and Silas kill the Shrine Maiden and give them both Pair-Up partners so that they can't be attacked twice and they block off the exit to the room. Then you can safely kill the Archers. Haitaka can be captured by Niles if you have a prison; his above-average stats and good skills allow him to be very useful in the infamous Chapter 10. You will need to be very careful in order to capture Haitaka; make sure Azura is always ready to give Niles an escape route should he become injured or be ready to accidentally kill him.
Trivia
- This chapter reuses the map from Birthright Chapter 20, albeit with the difference that, in Birthright, the outside of the fort is off limits due to being trapped inside.
