“ | Who’s that yelling like a maniac outside? As if I don't have enough trouble. Urrr, is that my father? Of course he'd have to show up in the middle of all this. Well, forget him. I've got enough to worry about, keeping us all alive in here. Everyone! Stay close! I'll heal you up if you get hurt! | ” | — Dwyer |

Fight or Flight (Japanese: 闘わぬことの意味 The Point of not Fighting) is the fourth paralogue chapter in Fire Emblem Fates. As a paralogue chapter, its events are not integral to the game's main storyline and can be done at the player's leisure. The chapter is unlocked after both having Jakob married and clearing a certain chapter along the main story path; for players with female avatar characters, the chapter to be cleared is chapter 7 (be it in Birthright, Conquest, or Revelation), while for players with male avatar characters, the chapter to be cleared is chapter 15 (be it in Birthright, Conquest, or Revelation).
In this chapter, Jakob's son, Dwyer, and his knight guardians find themselves up against invaders, and it is up to Corrin's army to protect them.

Bold Approach/Script
As Jakob arrives in a rotting village in a Deeprealm, he calls out toward people who might have seen his son, Dwyer, before deducing that Dwyer is a bad influence on the village; Jakob spots a figure that he thinks to be Dwyer, then calls out toward it and starting to chase after it. Once Jakob discovers the figure to be an invader, he first attempts to get the invader to speak before having to chase after it; as Jakob nears Dwyer's residence, he notices more invaders nearby and that the invaders are attacking the house; once Jakob yells out toward Dwyer warning him of the invaders, preparations take place at that point. Once preparations are complete, Dwyer asks the knights in his presence who's doing the yelling from the outside before deducing it to be Jakob; Dwyer states that his task is keepin the knights alive, and he's willing to heal them if they get hurt. Jakob notices Dwyer's behavior and deduces him to be hanging back and letting others do the fighting for him and calls such behavior a disgrace to their profession; the battle begins at this point.
Upon Jakob speaking with Dwyer, the two start arguing over how Dwyer should be handling butler duties; as Dwyer reiterates his role as a healer rather than a fighter, Jakob asks Dwyer to let him do the fighting in order to see how it's done with the player being able to control Dwyer afterward.
Once the battle ends, Dwyer notes how Jakob and the rest of Corrin's army helped clean the place up, with Jakob stating that Dwyer's knights have fled the scene; without anyone left to serve, Dwyer asks Jakob if he can leave the Outrealm, to which Jakob states that he'd never vouch for Dwyer and thus he'll have to stay in the Outrealm for the remainder of his life. A stray invader appears, with Dwyer slapping it; Jakob deduces that Dwyer has been training after all, after which Dwyer vows to become a better butler than Jakob is.
Summary
Enemies are attacking the rotting mansion where Dwyer, Jakob's son, lives. Jakob and company set out to confront the enemy, while Dwyer hangs back as healer.

Note: The returning characters list only those recruited by the time this chapter can first be unlocked (for players with female avatars, after completing chapter 7 on all routes; for players with male avatars, after completing chapter 15 on all routes). As a paralogue chapter, there is no set timeframe in which the chapter must be taken on; thus, it is possible to have recruited more characters than the above by the point the chapter is started.

Strategy
This section details unofficial strategies that may help with completion of the chapter. This may not work for everybody. |
The goal of this chapter is to defeat the boss Onmyoji. If you do not care about obtaining the experience that your units would get by fighting the enemy invaders, your goal should be to kill the boss as soon as possible. Fortunately, your army starts adjacent to the boss, allowing you to kill him on the first turn. Place a unit with locktouch next to the gate and open it. Then, use Azura to dance for a unit that can take out the boss in one round. Since the boss wields tomes, it is best to attack with daggers or lances to reduce the chance of him dodging your attack. Upon first glance it may seem as though this strategy would prevent you from recruiting Dwyer, however, he is automatically recruited at the end of the chapter regardless of whether or not Jakob spoke with him. Additionally, since the boss died on the first turn, you will still get the Friendship Seal and Talisman that you get for successfully keeping Dwyer's Knights alive.
If you do intend to fight the enemy for the experience, then it is best to ensure the safety of the Dywer and his allies first since if Dywer dies, you will be unable to recruit him, even on casual mode. Send a staff-wielder to the north to avoid combat and ensure the Knights do not die too early, exposing Dwyer. Make sure to also send Jakob north to recruit his son as early as possible as Dywer will occasionally heal allies from unsafe tiles in the line of enemy fire—he will likely be much safer with you controlling him and if you use the Offspring Seal in his inventory to boost his stats*. While the healer and Jakob move north, open the door to the northwest and draw the attention of the enemy units within so they do not overwhelm the allied knights and kill them. Reinforcements will appear near the boss on turn 11 and will come from the Western edges of the map on turns 14 and 17. Once those reinforcements have been cleared out, end the chapter by killing the boss.
