Anankos (Japanese: ハイドラ Hydra) is an ancient silent dragon who is revered as one of the god-like First Dragons. He is the king of the ruined kingdom of Valla, whose descent into madness resulted in the obliteration of both Valla and almost all of its people.
Anankos is the main antagonist of Fire Emblem Fates on the Revelation route, and the true main antagonist of the game overall, being the one who created the impostor of Garon and possessed Takumi during Conquest's endgame.
Biography

Anakos was one of the First Dragons and for a long time resided peacefully over Valla where he was worshiped as a god. When he learned about his inevitable degeneration, he created a dragonstone to give to the royals of Valla along with his blood and created a song to help calm him. His degeneration did not stop, leading him to attack the king of Valla and burn down a forest; his heart separated from his body and took a human form, leaving behind a dragon that was cursed by Valla for it violence. The human Anankos had a child with Mikoto that would become Corrin, and the dragon Anankos had a child that would become Lilith. The human Anankos later traveled to Ylisse to recruit Owain, Severa, and Inigo. When the human Anankos lead his forces towards Lilith's army, she attempted to kill the human Anankos, but she could not bring herself to kill him. When the dragon Anankos attempted to kill Lilith, the human Anankos sacrificed himself for her; Lilith vowed to not tell Corrin that the human Anankos had died, then traveled to Nohr to look for them. The dragon Anankos killed almost everyone in Valla.
Fire Emblem Fates
Role
Hidden Truths (DLC)
In the Hidden Truths DLC, the human Anankos travels through time and space to Ylisse to recruit Owain, Severa, and Inigo to help him. After defeating the Vallite forces who ambush them, Anankos offers to grant their wishes in exchange for their help; they wish that he fill the future world they lived in with flowers and give proper burials to their parents. As a thanks for doing such, the Robin from the future gives the Fell Brand to Anankos, who later gives it to the trio.
Within Valla, Anankos explains who he is and what his goal is. While doing so, Lilith appears and attacks them; Anankos provides Owain, Severa, and Inigo new powers and some of his blood, allowing them to use Dragon Veins; the three warriors then defeat Lilith's army. Lilith attacks the warriors again, but Anankos teleports them to Nohr to find his child. Lilith attempts to kill Anankos, but cannot bring herself to do it when the human Anankos demonstrates more love for her than the dragon Anankos did. The dragon Anankos attempts to kill Lilith, but the human Anankos intercedes and saves Lilith's life. Lilith vows to her dragon father not to reveal his identity to Corrin before slipping into the Astral Realm and heading for Nohr.
At the end of the DLC, the dragon form of Anankos momentarily loses control as his voice; mixed with his human voice, he states that he believes in his warriors and believes they will come and end his life with his child.
Birthright
Anankos is not shown throughout the story of Birthright; he is, however, briefly mentioned by Garon in his Blight Dragon form during the Endgame, granting Garon enough strength to transform into his dragon form and continue to battle.
Conquest
Anankos is not shown directly in Conquest, but Corrin is able to learn a bit more of Anankos from Garon than in Birthright. When Corrin joins Nohr, Garon states that they will be executed, but all the other royals of Nohr object to the idea. Garon decides to ask his god, Anankos, on what to do with Corrin's fate; Garon relays to Corrin that they will be kept alive if they are able to stop the rebellion in the Ice Tribe by themselves. Despite stopping the rebellion with aid, Anankos tells Garon to keep Corrin alive.
Although not mentioned by name, when Corrin and Azura are in Valla, Azura shows Corrin through a Vallite crystal that Anankos replaced Garon with an empty vessel. Azura also states that the only way to reveal the empty vessel is to make Garon sit on the throne of Hoshido, using its magic to reveal Garon's true form and then kill him to end the war. During Chapter 26, Garon prays to Anankos after having conquered Hoshido, not allowing anyone else to enter the throne room. In Chapter 27, Corrin and their army enter the throne room, revealing Garon's true form. In battle, Garon says that he should have disobeyed Anankos and killed Corrin, but Corrin states he has nothing to do with this and blames Garon for starting the war and Corrin kills the empty vessel.
Anankos is briefly mentioned one last time by Azura during the Endgame, when a possessed Takumi almost kills Corrin. During Corrin's near-death experience, Azura and the spirit of Takumi tell them that they are fighting another empty vessel sent by Anankos to kill Corrin after Garon failed.
Revelation
In Revelation, Anankos is more directly relevant than in Birthright or Conquest, and it is revealed who and what he actually is. Anankos possesses Gunter, who serves Corrin as he normally would, but would attempt to kill Corrin whenever they were alone; one of these attempts resulted in Scarlet being killed instead. Anankos is the boss of the last two chapters of the Revelation campaign.
His first in-person appearance is as the boss of Chapter 27 in his masked head form, where the player must defeat him to clear the chapter. He reappears in the Endgame as its boss in his dragon form; he must be defeated in four parts: first his two hands must be defeated, then his head must be defeated to destroy his body and expose his core, then the core must be defeated.

It is mentioned, that like Archanean dragons, dragons in Fates suffer degeneration. To save themselves from this degeneration, many dragons took human form or abandoned their bodies altogether. Anankos and the Rainbow Sage were the only two of the twelve divine dragon's that could not leave the human world. In the Hidden Truths DLC, Anankos's soul takes a human form maintaining his original personality. He is shown to be a caring individual who cares about mankind and even once lived among them. He loves his child Corrin and wishes he could be a true father to them. He also shows to care for Lilith, going as far as to sacrifice his own life to save hers.
When he starts falling into degeneration and destroys a forest, many people began to curse him for his actions. As a result Anankos hid himself away in a cave with a growing loathing for humanity, as he was cursed by the same people who once worshiped him as a god. In a rage Anankos accidentally kills the king of Valla, his closest friend who tried to help him, and forever goes insane from this action. He develops a deep bloodlust and hatred for humanity, summoning invisible soldiers from the dead and forcing Hoshido and Nohr at war. Anankos feels that he is the only one made to suffer from the hands of humanity and is determined to destroy them. In Heirs of Fates, Anankos attempts to create a new world where dragons are once again worshiped as gods, invading multiple deeprealms in order to achieve this goal.

Trivia
- Anankos's voice actor, Rokurō Naya, passed away before Fire Emblem Fates was even revealed.
- Despite being the progenitor of Valla's royalty from whose blood the ability to use the Dragon Veins is derived, Anankos himself does not possess the ability to activate Dragon Veins in-game.

English |
Anankos |
Alteration of the name of Ἀνάγκη Anánkē, the personification of inevitability in ancient Greek mythology. Her name as a word originally just meant "force" or "necessity", but ancient Greek literature gave it a secondary, poetic meaning of "fate" and "destiny". The changing of the ending from -ē to -os makes the name masculine instead of feminine. |
Japanese |
ハイドラ |
Officially romanized as Hydra. The hydra, full name Lernaean Hydra, is an aquatic serpent-like dragon in Greek mythology which possessed many heads. The name is similar to the Greek-derived prefix hydro-, meaning water, reflecting the character's power over water. |
